So its basically been exactly one year since I started making MiSTer FPGA videos (hardware overviews, MiSTer Analog video tutorials, FPGA core reviews and FPGA vs software emulations reviews) and now its time to ask myself...was it worth it? Here is my ONE YEAR REVIEW of the MiSTer FPGA project. Retro gaming look back here we come!

On this episode of our MiSTer series we are going to be talking about whether or not I found the MiSTer FPGA to be worth purchasing after a year of ownership! We will take a look at Neo Geo, Sega Genesis, the Sharp X68000, the MiSTer FPGA's analog video outputs...and a ton of other FPGA related topics to answer whether or not I would go back in time and NOT buy it!

I've had my MiSTer for a few months now, and it is the best retro gaming investment I've ever made in my life. I grew up playing these games on their original hardware. Still own them and all my old games, but it has become increasingly unrealistic for me to actually hook them all up to my TV along with my new devices. The MiSTer is the magic device I've been looking for. It is awesome.

Yes the time savings aspect is great. We are all busy. If I want to play a CPS 2 game, then a Neo Geo game...for me that means one console and the cables plus digging out arcade boards and my supergun. Half my time I have gets eaten up by the setup

That's exactly how I feel about it. The differences from real hardware are imperceptible, and in many ways the MiSTer improves on the original system (e.g. light gun emulation, higher sprite limits, CPU/SuperFX turbo on SNES, double resolution for GBA sprite rotation, widescreen/data cache/faster CD reads on PSX.) And it's an investment that gets better over time. When I bought mine, CPS2 and PSX weren't a thing!

I feel that you've made an underrated point. A lot of people love fiddling around with original hardware and more power to them, but once you get the MiSTer up and running, you're more likely to give any game a shot. Reminds me a lot of the HIFI world, in fact.

I sourced and bought my MiSTer in the relatively early months of the pandemic in 2020. I'd been following the project for a while and knew I wanted to get one, so when I was able to I started buying the parts. I don't think I spent $500, but I went with a 3D printed case and some of it cost far less at that point. I don't play it as much as I intend to, but I love following the progress and usually demonstrate it when friends come over.

Thanks to this amazing channel I was finally convinced to drop a ton of dosh and get a MiSTer, honestly I couldn’t be happier!! I’ve only experienced that revelation feeling once before in my life and that was when the OG Xbox was hacked and all the old consoles & arcade games were playable. I can remember walking into my buddies game shop and he showed me what it could do and I was blown away!! However the problem was and always has been since, even on the pc, is that its emulation, amazing but still emulation! The MiSTer is different, for the first time it feels like the real hardware, from a games playing perspective at least and that really is a game changer! I’ve got all my consoles still out and running and honestly now I have the MiSTer I barely switch any of them on! Yes it’s initially expensive but if you look at the current crop of titles available it’s justifying that price so many times over! Console game prices are at an all time high, not to mention arcade boards so the MiSTer finally offers, for the first time, a genuine no downside alternative! I may be lighter in the pocket but I’m happier in my heart and can’t wait to see where this amazing project goes next!! Maybe XexeX & Splatterhouse if I’m lucky!! Thanks Anthony!!👍

I used to own a Double Dragon cabinet many years ago and it was one of the first games I fired up on the MiSTer when I first got it. I was stunned at how good it was. I’d fired up a few emulators over the years to play Double Dragon but it was never exactly the same as real hardware. The MiSTer changed all that for me. I moved onto the SNES core and all the games were identical to running on real hardware. I’ve dropped a lot of money into this device but it’s worth every cent.

I got my MiSTer at the end of 2020 as I checked all the reviews and decided it was something I really wanted. I absolutely love this device. I got the mt32pi with the geekworm case for the rpi. I got d0pefish’ s little stands. I got a bunch of 8bitdo controllers - and their cute little speakers. Each time Amazon has a sale I double the size of my sd card. I got the Mister Addons aluminium case. I love how everything is so simple and streamlined with MiSTer. I have another machine running Batocera which I use for N64, OG XBOX and so forth, but I waste so much time fiddling with settings to get the games to play. MiSTer is so much easier and quicker to get going. I am shocked at how much better the PSX core is compared to some software emulators for some non standard games that just run perfectly on the MiSTer. It’s something I am very happy I purchased. Thanks for your review video. Cheers :-)

I have to agree, with all of the various emulators and whatnot that I have tried over the years, MiSTer (and the FPGA approach to emulation) is absolutely the best. I also love the output to CRT. I pretty much play it exclusively on my Sony WEGA CRT via component, which looks AMAZiNG! Heck, the only time I play on an LCD is when I want to play a game in vertical format. Even then, I recently got a VGA cable this week to connect it to an old 17" 5:4 VGA monitor that I picked up during a hardware giveaway at work a few years ago. Options - that is definitely the best thing about MiSTer. I personally use a couple of original controllers, thanks to the Blisster board I set mine up with, but the SNAC options are just as good.

I bought my DE-10 Nano before the NeoGeo core was even released. People raving about the Genesis core convinced me to purchase it because I was betting that it would definitely garner more interest and more cores as time went on. It was one of my better investments. It plays all the consoles I can't justify purchasing. NeoGeo, arcade boards, the TurboGrafx, the X68000. I never dreamed the PS1 would receive a core, let alone provide an experience that's often superior to the original hardware. One of my best gaming purchases.

Also YES to 3DO! It's the only retro console that I used to own that I (stupidly) got rid of back in the day. I really wish I never sold it back in the 90s, but I got $500 for it at the time and I wanted more money toward N64 games. The 3DO had a shockingly decent library of games. Including games that originated on the console that later become popular elsewhere, like Need for Speed and Gex. My friends and I used to play Twisted a lot as well (a crazy gameshow game). And it had the best home version of Super Street Fighter II Turbo at the time.

I tend to make the argument that a MiSTer build is a better investment than collecting original hardware and RGB modding (and flash carts). And I won't deny that a software emulation box with a Pi or a used PC can be a much cheaper solution. But there is a certain versatility that MiSTer shines with. If I want to play on my Commodore 1702 monitor with original controllers like the old days, I can. If I want to play on a nice big screen and speakers, I can. If I want to play with a computer CRT and keyboard like it's a 486 DOS computer, I can. And all of this is very easy to jump between by using the controller shortcuts to load different ini files. Plug in the display's cable, hit the ini shortcut, and I'm ready. The community support has been fantastic and the microSD card isn't locked to a Linux or Unix file system for the main storage. It's made adding new games or things like the Composite / S-Video cores a breeze. Everything else the update_all script handles well. Even reinstalling the MiSTer base files has been possible without wiping the card so troubleshooting the rare bad update hasn't been a problem. I'm pretty confident in saying that no singular Pi or PC makes it as simple as MiSTer does. It's a cost to own a full stack and it has a ceiling for what it can run, but it's one heck of a build that I have no regrets owning.

i was watching your videos for a while while saving up for a mister fpga. Turns out i decided to sell my second PS5 as i was not using it for fighting games at all (as that was the plan for a second one) and used the money to get the mister FPGA. Mind you i have played Fightcade 2 and Retropie on a raspberry pie 4. I thought what RPI4 was going to be MiSTer as there was a lot of misconception around accuracy, and all those people that they were modding their Arcade 1ups with it. Pi4 didnt feel better than Fightcade 2, in fact it felt way worse in terms of input lag. After i tried MiSTer, i couldn't be more happy. So many games to explore, especially me getting hooked up yesterday on Neogeo and Shumps, i felt like i was rotating arcade cabinets and then winded down with Castlevania on PCEngine, that i didn't even know it existed till i found it. My whole life i only knew about Sony and NIntendo when it was about consoles, but now, i feel so many amazing games are waiting to be discovered. What an amazing project. And not to even talk about the Pre-sets and Shadow Masks, the Sony PVM/Trinitron are so well made with my Dell 2007FPb. I couldn't feel any more satisfied than having this over that second ps5. MiSTer rocks.

Honestly the AO486 is the reason I got mister. Sometimes it's just too much of a PITA to set up DOSBox or DOSBox-x for each old game and they don't run win 9x at all. I don't use it enough but I'm happy with it. II do wish they would upgrade the de10 nano though maybe keep the same FPGA but use regular ports and maybe get the arm side to the same level maybe even compatible with raspberry pi. There are a lot of features I would like to see in the hardware more than the software. The software or should I say firmware made by the community is awesome. Terasic should make a board just for our community, IMO.

My only complaint about the MiSTer is that I just can't find a case I like. Outside of that, it's the best bang-for-the-buck in the retro gaming market. Like $500 in retro outside of a MiSTer MIGHT get you a console, and maybe a flash cart. But then you probably couldn't get an equal RGB upscaler, so it's still not going to be on par even for one console.

Mister is the perfect middle ground between an emulator and buying a bunch of modded original hardware. It's not cheap but it's a heck of a lot cheaper than original hardware and it's giving you that low lag authentic experience an emulator can't quite do as well as the analog signal. Also, it has quite a few of the features an emulator has that you won't be able to get on modded original hardware. All that said my main complaint as a guy who switched over from emulation to mister? The lack of save states on most cores. I have limited free time and sometimes I don't want to restart an entire level because I need to make a pixel perfect jump. Sometimes I need to leave quickly and I don't have the time to search out the nearest save point in an old RPG. Plenty of other examples but save states are a wonderful modern addition to old games and misters lack of support for them in a lot of cores is a strike against it in my book.

"Not Cheap" is relative though. I upgraded my NES to RGB output ($250 shipped), bought the OSSC ($200 shipped), bought a gScart switch ($250 shipped) bought high quality SCART cables (Retro Access FTW, ~$50 each shipped)!), and bought multiple flash carts (NES, SNES, Genesis, MVS for my Neo Geo cab, Satiator). All together the cost for everything I bought was close to $1800-$2000. For $500, you get more systems than what I updated or bought SCART for, HDMI output without a fuss, analog output in original res to a CRT if you want it, cycle perfect accuracy (if not 100%, very, very close), you don't have to have space to setup all these systems if you want them all available all the time, you don't have to deal with dying capacitors (a very real, very scary thing), dying lasers, and so on. Add on cycle perfect CPS2? SFA 2 and 3? BONUS! You can't play lightgun games without a CRT for Mister or retro consolethough. I am aware of lightgun options for Mister but for $300-$500 per gun, I have held off on going there. Yet. I wouldn't give up my actual hardware for much of anything but end of the day what I power on all the time is the Mister. The only retro systems I turn on these days are Saturn (waiting for that Core!), Dreamcast, N64, and PS3. My Neo cab from time to time as well, since it's there, it's big, and it's FUN. If you are just starting out and thinking you want to play retro games and don't have any of the actual games, I cannot recommend you buy a Mister enough to avoid hardware headaches and tracking down deals on the games you want to play or SD carts or ODEs for optical based systems..

Maybe I'm missing something but I fail to see the advantage compared to an Emulator on PC. Looks like a great system, but I never understood why I should buy one instead of using emulation. You get plenty of scaling and shaders options too, all the community features you mentioned are available on PC too. Of course you need a good emulator, but isn't mister technically emulation too, just on an FPGA Level instead software?

@@VideoGameEsoterica I understand and agree, it's just I'm guessing you've been around emulation since the early days (Nesticle, No$GB, ZSNES, UltraHLE, etc..) and we can agree at the time was mind blowing and amazing! Then emulators on modded OG XBox took emulation to that next level of "consolization". Again, awesome. Then came the smart phones and by extension Android boxes, etc which in my opinion became a case of diminishing returns. FPGAs are the newest breakthrough and provide a hardware-level accuracy that is fundamentally impossible when an OS layer is in the way. Emulators were good while they lasted, but I just can't help but admit that FPGA technology is superior when it comes to trying to achieve 1:1 performance to original hardware (without all the inconveniences and costs associated with modding vintage consoles then wiring everything together).
