How to avoid cross pollination in squash for seed saving.
This is a video about how to avoid the crossing of squash.
1. Identify the male and female flowers prior to opening, prevent them from opening to avoid cross pollination by insects.
2. The next day manually pollinate the female flower with the male flower.
3. Protect the female flower for another 2 days.
4. Mark the flower for later seed saving.

i have been saving seeds for years and had to toss all my squash (winter and summer) seeds as last year all I managed to grow were crosses. so this year i'm buying new seeds and will definetly use your technique. Thanks

Man I’m telling you, I’m so stoked to learn this method. My wife loves all squash and I’m a seed saver wannabe. I was really anxious about cross pollination of Squash, Pumpkin & Cucumbers as well as Gourds. This is a great way of saving seed for them. I just have to get up in the morning… when’s that? Oh and what’s the deal with sweet corn??? Awesome job, Thank you!

how did it turn out? I've inadvertantly crossed squash plants and most are horrible.

This is awesome! Do you pick the male flower of the same plant, or it must be the male flower of the same type of plant?

hi, you CAN use the male flower of a different plant but if you do you will most likely get a cross between the male plant and the female plant. Often crosses (aka hybrids) are inedible. So stick to the male and female from the same type of plant, doesn't need to be the exact same plant but the same family.....so zucchini flowers from two different plants can pollinate each other and stay a zucchini...but if you tried an acron squash and a zucchini, you'd get a weird hybrid but you wouldn't know until you save the seeds and then planted them next year. make sense? it's kind of a complicated topic, however once you understand it, you'll get it forever...kind of like Algebra ;)

If the squashes (you are wanting to save seeds from) are from different squash species, you don't have to do this. Only necessary if growing varieties within the same species. Cheers! Good technique though.

Must the male flower come from a second plant, or can you use a male and female from the same plant?

It can be from the same plant absolutely, most plants that we save seed from self pollinate by having perfect flowers. Squashes are vulnerable to accidental pollination because they have separated male and female flowers, meaning they require insects to carry the pollen from male to female.

Why do you suggest to save seeds just from that particular butternut squash and not any of the others that grow on the plant?

hi Lori, he used those flowers (from that partiular butternut plant) because they were both the perfect age to pollinate (the flowers were just about to open but hadn't opened up yet), i'm sure he pollinated more in the following days on the same plant and other plants.
