Potala refers to a mountain in India sacred to the religion, and for centuries its namesake palace has been at the core of Tibet’s monastic community.
Much of the current palace complex dates to the seventeenth century. But the earliest construction began a thousand years earlier, on the commission of a Tibetan king, in honor of his marriage to a princess of China. The growing fortress became the winter home for the Dalai Lamas, monastic leaders of Tibetan Buddhism.
UNESCO’s World Heritage designation extends to the neighboring Jokhang Temple, considered Tibet’s most sacred, and the Norbulingka, once the Dalai Lama’s summer residence.
Conflict led to the exile of the Dalai Lama from China’s Tibetan Autonomous Region in 1959, and the grounds became a museum. But the Potala Palace remains a major Buddhist pilgrimage site. Many travel long distances by foot to pay their respects. Potala is divided into the Red Palace, which is for religious use, and an administrative White Palace.
Visitors to Potala have to go with a tour group, and obtain a special permit. Once in, you pass through hallways lit by butter lamps, and into public areas watched over by monks. In addition to the historic structures, the heritage site contains a vast collection of sacred texts and works of art. Withstanding the elements and political struggle, Potala Palace remains an embodiment of Tibetan culture.

Yes, truly a magnificent site but sad and unrealistic how this is presented. Is it 'a major centre for Buddhist spirituality'? No. Tibetans who live there are not even allowed to own a picture of their beloved Dalai Lama! Religious festivals are banned! Can Tibetans from around the World go to visit the site? No! Though the US have just brought in a law - The reciprocal access to Tibet Act 2018 - it sets a ban on Chinese officials who deny US citizens access to Tibet.

The Middle-Way Approach is proposed by His Holiness the Dalai Lama to peacefully resolve the issue of Tibet and to bring about stability and co-existence between the Tibetan and Chinese peoples based on equality and mutual co-operation. It is also a policy adopted democratically by the Central Tibetan Administration and the Tibetan people through a series of discussions held over a long time. This brief introduction to the Middle-Way policy and its history is intended for the Tibetan people inside and outside Tibet - and all those interested - to have a better understanding of the issues involved.

The first structure that came up in 7AD was retreat centre for the king. Chinese always try to claim everything related to Tibet as having the connection with China. Two temples were built in 7AD by Tibetan King Songsten Gampo to house two statues of Buddha one brought by Chinese princess and another Nepalese princess as a dowry.

Asian Guy just simply brought dowry to Tibetan king doesn’t mean Tibet is part of China . Ccp and it’s stupid followers have been re writing the whole story ever since ccp itself was build on lies . Nothing but feel pity on you . Ignorance will dump you .

Did u know jetsun pema or the Arya tara "bhrikuti devi" of Nepal or the Nepalese princess brought many holy scriptures and "thankas" and many skilled nepali wood workers that helped to build the potala palace ? The Asian style of "pagoda" has its root .even the nepali architect "araniko" helped Chinese in building many temples and palaces

I see that visitors can't take picture inside, that is good. I would suggest that visitors must take off their shoes and take cares of their own shoes while inside (put them in the bags or whatsoever).

Holy cow. Build a palace made of monstrous wooden beams and blocks of stone, at 12,000 feet? Those workers must have had amazing cardio (or they were slaves). There's not a lot of O2 at that elevation. Color me impressed.
