See Me Swatch & Review These Beautiful Polish Watercolors!

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Today I am reviewing the handmade paints from Poland by the company Renesans. They were sent to me by April at A Little Creative on Etsy: www.etsy.com/shop/alittlecrea... *This link included the coupon code FRUGALFAN which will give you $3.50 off (the price of a half pan) an order of $60 or more.
BTW the swatching stamps I use can be found here: shrsl.com/15rqd
Here is the huge pad of paper I buy for swatching and practise: amzn.to/2xtNK1J
An overview of renesans paints. Renesans paint is a partially handmade paint imported from Poland. Although they are "handmade" they resemble traditional watercolor in vibrancy and transparency. Although some of the name may differ from what we usually see the pigment numbers are tried and true watercolor pigments. Many of the colors are single pigment colors. The paints contain honey and that makes them rewet very easily.
The paints come in the following arrangements:
15 ml tubes for $5.50
1/2 pans for $3.50
Set of 24 half pans for $58
Set of 12 half pans for $30
Empty tin for $15
*If you buy 24 half pans you get a free tin, check with the 24 assortment first to see if you like the colors as they work out to $2.42 a half pan in the 24 set so it is a better deal if you prefer most of the colors that come in the 24 set.
Pros:
Price: Awesome value-See above
Rich and vibrant color using artist grade pigments
Rewets instantly with a wet brush
Tube labels match color inside well (they use photos of actual color swatches)
Paint disperses well
Paint glazes well
Paint lays down smooth
Cons:
Not widely available. A Little Creative is the only USA distributor and she will start shipping to Canada soon but if you live elsewhere you may have a hard time finding these paints.
The browns in the 24 set are a bit muddy (so I recommend adding the tube burnt sienna, it sings!)
Overall impressions:
Honestly you can't go wrong with this paint. I think the tubes would be my preference because they are such a fantastic deal, at least a tube of the burnt sienna to go with a pan set because it is one of the richest, cleanest B.S. I have seen. Or starting with a pan set and refilling with tubes as you use them up. With the renesans paint you are getting real artist paint at student quality pricesandI have no qualms whatsoever recommending these.
*This is not a sponsored video but I did receive the paints for free to review.

Yes Lindsay, there are people who enjoy watching paint dry and I am proudly one of them! So don't worry about the length of the videos, it is enjoyable to see all the colors, watch you mix colors, and more importantly your commentary is educational. Your observations about pigment color and consistency, and your comparisons to brands you have personally used are all very interesting. You are informative and an excellent educator, so bring on the swatching videos, of any and all mediums and the viewers will come. Thumbs up👍! Lisa

This was so relaxing :) It was good seeing the radial mixing swatch, the stamp looked a bit daunting, but after you showed it, I realized it was quite simple. And having you explain the large swatch stamp and what the abbreviations meant - that was very appreciated! The colours were so gorgeous, they seemed to have that magic that hand made paints seem to have, but still be consistent. The greens were breath taking! Thank you!

The tubes are $5.50 for Series 1 only.. The Series 2 are $6.50 and the Series 3 are $7.25. The prices are based on the pigments that are used. Just an FYI so no one is shocked when they go to order and the total is not what they expect. For beginners- it is normal for paints to have tier pricing based on the pigments used to produce the paint. Thanks for the great video. Love the review videos; even if it does make me want to buy more paints.

The blues and greens are particularly nice. I love Renesans, passed on most of the browns as they live in a set which already contains a Kremer landscape set which has those I need, and the two brands work well together. The tube line has a slightly different range to the pans and the names are a bit more precise I feel. It is certainly a brand to watch the quality is really great.

For someone who is a beginner I find it fascinating to hear all the details you talk about. I liked learning how you did the swatch. I learned quite a few things also This set of paints looks really nice. The additional colors you added in the middle are a must have addition to the 24 set. The Etsy seller would do herself good to make a listing for the exact colors you searched with the exception on not duplicating the burnt umber ( I think that was the deuplicate). And instead adding the potters pink in place of the duplicate. I bet lots of others beside myself would be interested in buying the exact same set as you swatches. Call it the Frugal Fan set.

I’m curious if they are still as amazing of a value comparing them to other paint tubes similar in price. Ultimately it’s just nine dollars total more if one were to purchase six of the tubes. There’s so many professional grade tubes of specific colors I’m needing to order so I might still try these having just now seen this lovely helpful video.

Does anyone know what colors she used to do her primary triads? Like the names that the company gave the paint. I.e: primary is quinacridone red, transparent yellow; cool is ultramarine blue, etc.

Lindsey, Thank you so very, very much. I watched and learned from your for years. I am just getting back into watercolor and I'd love to try these. They are stunning. But, I have a problem and hope you will help me with it. I painted for years with Sennelier paint but wanted to try a U.S. honey based brand so I tried and absolutely loved M.Graham paint. Then about 8 years ago I started having problems with it. There is a strong wet dog odor that I smell when using it. I wrote Steve, at MofW, and he said it had happened for a short while when he used it on some Arches, but dissipated almost immediately. Not for me. It seems I am allergic to their honey. Too long a story but I did check with them and it's all me. Can you tell me if there was an issue when you tried these. I'd love to get some but don't want to go through the experience I had again. Thanks again for all you do. You are amazing!

Enjoyed! I have 1 comment and 1 question please: When you were doing the triads, as a beginner, I don't yet know the names of the colours in the pallet, i.e. red, yellow and blue primaries, but what are their names and what are the names of warm and cool colours. Sorry if daft question. I looked on your blog to see if it would give me the names of colours in the triads but no. At 46.44 in video there is a beautiful scene with 3 boats and on left a wonderful colour array of leaves, both so gorgeous

Thanks. I'm not sure what I picked as this was long ago but I pick cool versions of a primary and warm versions of a primary and see how well the create secondary colors. You can pick any red, yellow and blue you want and experiment. It's how you learn:)

Lindsey, the price has increased. $7/tube, $68 for the 24 half pan tin and $175 for the 48 tin. Have you heard of Rosa Gallery paints? It's from Ukraine - also very nice colors. I paid about $19 for 12 full pans. I heard that they are very close to the Renesans paints.

I haven't tried Rosa tubes but the Rosa pans rewet better than dried down renesans pans. The renesans have a bit more binder I think. The renesans pans flow better than Rosa pans. Overall I'd say the quality is similar.

Hi Lindsay. I hear you from time to time when you talk about paints you also say like PB 19, being new to watercolors I don't understand what that means. Is it a standard color number or something and where would I get a list of those numbers and colors. Your videos have got me trying to do watercolors and now stamping and making cards. Which pegstamps should be sending you a thank you card for my order. Lol. Wish you would do a basic video on watercolors for those of us new to it. I have seen your other beginner videos guess I kinda feel like I'm still missing information. But thank you for your wonderful videos please keep them coming. From someone with limited abilities you have shown me something I can do even if I don't do it well.... yet!

  • @dees3179

    @dees3179

It is the pigment number. The letters refer to the colour family, i.e. 'y' is yellow. Then the number is a standard reference to the chemical or mineral used to make the pigment. The company can process the pigment differently and get a different shade but I would expect the characteristics (transparency, granulation etc) to stay mostly the same. You might see a third element which is a colon and another number. This means a really different process to the pigment resulting in different colour or behaviour. One of the reasons it is useful to know is you could have two blues that look pretty much the same. But with different pigments. They could have different tinting strength, staining, transparency, granulation etc. By knowing the pigment number this becomes broadly predictable. They are generally known by standard name such as 'azo yellow' for artists paints and then most student lines made by the same manufacturers. The more fanciful names are generally seen on paint aimed at the craft industry. This paint isn't by definition bad, but you might need to work a bit harder to find the pigment info. You also see that certain pigments are more light fast. If a colour is called xxxxx 'hue' it is not the pigment that the name would normally indicate. Often you see this with alizarin chrimson, the original if which is fairly fugitive. This could be good or bad. It might be a cheaper combination of pigments substituting for the original to save money. It could be a more light-fast pigment/combo replacing something really fugitive. It could be a replacement for a pigment which is no longer available. Some paints such as sap green are always a combination although which pigments are used is not standardised. They are useful for convenience if you find yourself mixing the same thing all the time. But you can find that if you want to add that mix to a third or fourth pigment you could get mud. You might want mud, that is fine. But by knowing what you mix together you have more control over the results.

All of the pigment info is on her website in the listings, I go by the pigment info for the lightfast predictions but the tubes have the rating on them. They go by the Blue Wool Scale where 1 is fugative and 8 is excellent and all of the tubes got ratings of 8 excellent which I would expect knowing the pigment numbers. I will mention this to April and see if she will put the light fastness on the site next to the color names if she can. When I am in doubt about a pigment I reference this website: www.artiscreation.com/Color_index_names.html that way you can check the pigment info and see before buying. Handprint is also a good site but it is harder to navigate. Keep in mind these sites for with the ASTM lightfast ratings where ! is excellent, 2 is good, 3 is OK but not great and 4-5 is fugative
