    Thanks, Tommy, for sharing! We are happy that you had a very good experience, and shared that you are in a part of the country that can have frost heave issues. Some of our customers bell out the bottom of the hole, just to make sure they don't have any frozen ground lateral pressure causing frost heave, but some do not seem to have to do that. Secure Set is a closed cell foam, so it does not absorb water like concrete; therefore, no frost heave. And you can set the posts more shallow than with concrete. Thanks again for the wonderful review. GRA Services - The Makers of Secure Set

    Some very valid points in this video. I have experience with Sika products from Switzerland, and have had good success with them... however this "Secure Set" products seems like a superior product, as a better substitute over concrete. Obviously NOT all concrete applications would allow substitutes like this, but there are plenty that would, and I can see real benefits to using something like this around underground plumbing to protect it.

    My concern was price. Secure Set is more money. $16+ per bottle compared to $9+ per bag of Sika. And since most people have to budget for their projects, a 2/3rds price increase to buy Secure Set may be prohibitive. Other than that, it's a great product. I've used both and haven't had issues with either one. It has just come down to cost. Would definitely buy again.

    Hello, Yes, a single post kit of Secure Set is more expensive. The difference is in the quality of the foam. Sika is a 2 lb foam with a compression strength of around 35 psi. Secure Set is a 5.2 lb foam with a compression strength of 100.2 psi. It was formulated for the electric utility industry to support large electric power poles. We use the same formula for the fencing industry. In addition, if you have multiple posts to set, it is much cheaper to purchase Secure Set by the gallon. A 4 gallon kit costs $116.00 and will set 20 4x4 wood posts or 28 2 3/8ths Inch metal posts. Prorated, the wood posts are $5.80 per hole and the metal "Chain Link" fence style posts are $4.15 per hole. You can get the price you pay per hole very close to the price of a standard 80 lb bag of concrete. Thank you

    Sika cost me $11.97 per bag and not $9. Both products are a fraction of the strength of concrete. I did one hole with the Sika and the next day dug it out as there was too much movement of the post and then I used a fast set concrete. Concrete cost is $5 to $11 per hole and either way it is trivial compared to everything else involved with any project. It costs me $20 to make a trip to the local building supply store and that is if I exclude any value for my time. I have a truck so no big deal to put 50 bags of concrete in the bed but for those without a truck I can see the attraction of a two part foam - if only it really worked half as well.

    Benjamin Sampson might have been user error. I did a few hundred feet of fence using galvanized contractor posts and secure set. I watched all the instructional videos and read all the instructions provided by the company and none of the holes I poured “wobbled”. They were much more secure than the posts I had from the builder that were set in concrete. I also have a truck and have handled lots of quickrete bags in my day. I did the math and went with the foam. No water, no concrete mixer and VERY LITTLE cleanup. Used a few pairs of disposable gloves and was meticulous with the instructions (THAT IS KEY). I’ll never use bagged cement again.

    Mike D is right about instruction and everything, specially what was explained in this video about poor mixture of both component with Sika product. To Benjamin also. Please always state the depth you went with your post. In colder climate, the depth is way greater and the use of foam really does make sense. To not feel wobbly a post as to be able to resist a moment force. When you use concrete, you use a lot of weight of binding material. The only weight of the concrete is sufficiant to make you feel like the post is stiff even at low depth (check overturning moment). With foam, you have so little weight that the idea is to use lateral stiffness of the soil surrounding the post. But to get sufficient stiffness out of the soil, you need to go deep. In colder climate, where you need to be 5 feet deep anyway, it's a really good idea, elsewhere, 2.5 feet deep... not sure.

Have you had anyone use this to set poles used for the foundation of say a shed or a home? It looks like it would be great for that, and sure beats pouring footings or a slab. I could just set the poles, and fill the space under the building with ground cover cloth and gravel.

    I have used both. The secure set is more dense than sika. I had to fill a void under some stairs and the sika was easier to use since i could put the bag under the stairs and squeeze out the contents. The secure set I had to make a big PVC one use pump to get it under the stairs. If I were to use either of the 2 again in a hole where I could pour it in I would use secure set just because it feels like a rock when hardened. The secure set hardened in about 3 minutes. The sika was still hot after 15 minutes and was still sticky. But after 2 hours it was hard.

    Hello Cliff, Thank you for your comments. As you noticed, Secure Set is more dense and has a density of 5.1 lbs per cubic foot, versus 1.8 to 2.0 lbs per cubic foot for Sika. This results in a PSI compression strength differential of 100.1 psi for Secure Set and 30 PSI for Sika. Additionally, we have recently come out with a spray foam version of Secure Set that has a 3.0 lbs per cubic foot density with a compression strength of 45 psi. The spray foam version was developed to help with projects such as yours where you had to get foam deep under stairs or wash outs under driveways, etc. Works great, with extension tubes on the end of the nozzle, you can get foam as deep as 10 feet under stairs or other structures. Thank you for taking the time to comment!

    We ship to Canada and Alaska quite frequently. In many areas people say that they have to bury posts at least 4 to 5 ft because of the frost heave issues with concrete, but with Secure Set you don't have frost heave issues. The foam will not absorb water and no air passes through it. You can dig a bell shaped hole....larger at the bottom and bury line posts 1/4 of the overall length of the post. The corners and gate posts should be buried 1/3 of the overall length of the post.

    The advantage I see to sika is not having to mix it. I don’t like having to mix something like you do with resin or epoxy that’s a hassle. I’m not sure that compression strength is an issue for most post settings applications. If you are doing things like that rather than paying attention you shouldn’t use these products.

  • @SecureSet-Fence-Installation

    Hello, This is an interesting post. First of all, you ALWAYS have to mix two component products. SIKA is a two component product. You can't just cut the bag and pour the product into the hole. You have to break the seal between the two products and agitate the bag over your knee or some type of hard rounded surface in order to mix the two components in the bag. The bag is not transparent. You never know when you have an adequate mix of the two components. Lets address compression strength. Most soils in the USA compress at an average of 28 psi. SIKA has an average compression strength of 25 to 28 psi. There is no advantage in using SIKA over the use of recompacted soil other than the closed cell characteristic of the foam to block both air and water from coming in contact with the post below ground line. This will help deter below ground line decay or corrosion of either wood or metal posts. Secure Set is a highly sophisticated two component closed cell polyurethane product that is used by the electric utility industry to set electric utility poles ranging in height from 35 to 150 feet. There is a specific standard that power companies insist upon than dictates that whatever product you use to support a direct buried, non guyed structure, the supporting product must have a compression strength 2.5 times higher than the natural compressibility of the surrounding soil. Secure Set has a compression strength of 103.1 psi. That is 3.68 times the compressibility of native soil, well above the prescribed standard for structures significantly more sophisticated than that of an in-line fence post. Your lack of knowledge of the basic physics of what you are addressing is apparent when you state that compression strength is not important or that blending two liquid components are above the mental capability of most users are demeaning and ignorant of the basic physics of what you are trying to accomplish by building your own fence while using a product that will support and protect your fence decades longer than it will have been if you had just used concrete.

    Hello VTPSTTU, If the stones you used in the five gallon pail were large enough to allow the liquid Secure Set to flow around the stones, when it starts to expand it will flow up through the spaces, fill the bucket and encapsulate the stones and the T-Post. One of the benefits of the expanded foam is that it is highly adhesive, the stones and the post will all be "stuck" together. Use the heaviest stones you can get! Thank you

I am not sure about making a casting for fiberglass parts, but I do know that Secure Set is used often in the taxidermy business and also in theatrical productions for making all manner of props. It is easy to cut with any type of cutting tool, we have cut samples with our SawsAll. It can be sanded without it crumbling apart due to its higher density. One gallon of Secure Set will make 2.4 cubic feet of foam. Thank you

  • @SecureSet-Fence-Installation

    Hello Angelo, Interesting question. The answer is yes it will be denser, because it will not expand as much as normal. This foam has an expansion of 18:1. If it is cold, it might expand 12 to 14:1. With that the density will be greater and the compression strength will be higher. The down side is it will not fill as much space. Thank you.

    ok, how does secure set compare to concrete? I live in an area that has a temperature range from -25 in winter on occasion to almost 120 F in summer (often). The ground is inimical to wood and wood products no posts in my experience last more than 3-5 years, sometimes less so I'll be going with steel posts for a fence project. Winds providing the horizontal compression factor often exceed 45 mph, sometimes 65 mph straight-line winds such wind storms are known to last up to 3 days, but usually only 1 day. The fence I'm contemplating would be 6 feet tall and about 80 plus feet long, using wood pickets about 3 1/2 inches wide x 6 feet with about a 1 inch gap between them.

    Hello HHGL, Normally the hole width has an annulus of about 3 inches around the post. So your 8" diameter post would have a hole width of 14 inches. With a 36 inch deep hole and an 8" diameter post, you will have 3,737 cu. in. of void to fill. That will be 2.17 cubic feet per hole. 1 Gallon of Secure Set will expand to fill 2.4 cubic feet. So each post will require .9 gallons of Secure set. Your 12 post project will need 10.77 gallons, or 11 gal purchase. We have kits packaged in various sizes, the most economical to ship is the 4 gallon kit. If I were you I would order 3 - 4 gal kits, this will give you all you need plus a little extra in case one or more of your holes end up bigger than you need because of such things such as roots or rocks. • @SecureSet-Fence-Installation

    @SecureSet-Fence-Installation

    6 жыл бұрын

    Hello, Secure Set is what is known as a high density closed cell foam. In essence it means that neither air nor water can penetrate or move through the foam. It will not absorb or retain moisture. It helps prevent rot because the three conditions that must exist in order for rot to happen are, temperature, moisture and oxygen. We can't control the temperature, but preventing moisture and oxygen from reaching the posts means that the micro-organisms that feed off the natural sugars in the wood cellular structure cannot thrive because of the absence of these two key conditions. Also, wood eventually rots under normal conditions because the toxicity level of the preservative that is in the post, is normally leached out when a post is set in either natural soil or concrete. Secure Set will seal the post and prevent the preservative from leaving the post and dissipating into the soil, hence the preservative remains effective for many more years.

    Hello Edgar, There are times when you want to protect the base of the pole with the use of a closed cell foam, like Secure Set, in lieu of using concrete in order to prevent rot for wood or rust for metal. However, if you need to erect a fence, say like around a swimming pool, and you want the "finish or cosmetic" look of the base of the post to match the surrounding concrete work, bring the expanded foam up to about two inches from the top of the hole and then finish it off with a "topping' of concrete. This will give you the strength and protection for the post below ground line, yet provide you with a cosmetic look that matches the surroundings. It works very well! Thank you.

    Hello Brad, Once the bottles are opened and some of the product is used, it is important to reseal the bottles. The product has a shelf life of 1.5 years. We have had testimony from customers that have stored the product in their garage for up to five years and have then used what they had remaining. Most say the product took a little longer to activate, but that the end result was still very viable. Keep it sealed and in an area that does not get too hot or too cold and you should be fine. Thank you.

    The design expansion for Secure Set is 18:1 If you use it in cold weather you will not get the full benefit of the foam. Expansion will be reduced down to the 14 or 15:1 ratio. On the other hand, in the heat of summer, it will go 18:1 +

Depending on how deep you need to set these type posts, and how many posts, you might be able to use the 32 oz. shake and pour kits, or a 1 gallon kit. You can calculate your project on our web-site www.secureset.net. It will tell you how much product to purchase, as well as how much to pour per hole. • @SecureSet-Fence-Installation

    Hello, By its nature, Secure Set holds the posts very well. To get the post out of the hole, it is easiest to physically cut the foam away from the side of the post. When I have had to do this in the past, I use my chainsaw, run the tip of the saw blade vertically down along the sides of the post, actually cutting the foam away from the sides. Once you have done this, the post simply slips out of the hole. If you don't have a chainsaw, any cutting tool you have with a long blade will work. Other than that, the other method is to dig it out like you would concrete.

  • @SecureSet-Fence-Installation

    You can take a saw and cut down along the post to remove it and leave the foam in the ground, or cut it out with a sharp shooter shovel. The foam does generally seep into the earth, so you might have a root ball of foam if you choose to cut it completely out of the ground.

  • @SecureSet-Fence-Installation

    @SecureSet-Fence-Installation

    6 жыл бұрын

    Hello, Yes, deck posts can also be set with Secure Set for decks up to 4 to 5 feet above the ground. Make sure you set the posts deep enough and that you cross brace the vertical deck posts. Cross bracing will eliminate the potential for sway or shifting when you have a dynamic load shift, such as a deck full of people suddenly moving from one side of the deck to the other. Recommendation is to set the depth of the posts at least 1/3 of the overall length of the post or 24" whichever is greater. The diameter of the hole should be double the dimension of the post. ie: 4x4 posts should have a hole width that is 8". If you expect heavy loads on the deck, consider placing concrete pavers under the bottom of the posts to help distribute the column load on the deck posts. Secure Set will help prevent decay of the wood below ground line, because unlike concrete, Secure Set does not allow water or air to get to the post.Thank you very much for your interest in Secure Set.

    The same formula for Secure Set to set fence posts, also sets posts for decks, pergolas, gazebos, pole barns, light poles, utility poles, etc. We recommend to use it for decks up to 5' with 1/3 of the post in the ground and cross braced under the deck to support shifting load weight. Yes, in classical geometry, a radius of a circle or sphere is any of the line segments from its center to its perimeter, and in more modern usage, it is also the length, as per Wikipedia definition. When it explodes it goes all directions. We had a customer tell us that in a Home Depot store a bag got damaged in his cart by a sharp object. It exploded and went all over the isle he was standing in, as well as 2 isles over from him. It was a huge mess and potentially very dangerous for many people. Thank you for you comment, it gives us an opportunity to help explain.

  • @SecureSet-Fence-Installation

    @SecureSet-Fence-Installation

    Hello, That is a good question. It will stick to the pipe, but because the pipe is wet, the quality of the foam around the pipe will not be as good as if the pipe were dry. If an area is wet or damp, you can blow air into or on the area you want to surround with foam, such as using a shop vac with the hose reversed so you turn it into a blower, until the area is dryer, that is the best way to get quality foam surrounding the pipe. Thank you

I was going to fill the old pipe with concrete to seal it up, but using this expanding foam product seems much easier. Hello Allen, The type of foam that shrinks that they are talking about is the "Spray Foam In a Can" like Great Stuff. It is single component, open cell foam that is very cheap and will not hold up to weather or moisture. Do not use that type foam. Secure Set is a high density closed cell structural foam. If the conditions are dry when you use it, it will work very well. After the fact if it gets wet, it will not matter because water nor air cannot get through the foam. Thank you

    Do you know that Secure Set has been on the market for 21 years and the foam in the ground is projected to last 40 plus years? The posts set in Secure Set High Density closed cell foam will not have water or oxygen intrusion; therefore, they will not deteriorate below ground. You cannot say that about concrete, which is porous and allows water to freely move in and out of it. In northern climates you don't even have frost heave issues with Secure Set, since it does not absorb water. The posts do not need to be buried below the frost line (deeper digging and extra product is not needed). We just bell out the bottom of the hole and the frozen ground doesn't even pop the post up out of the ground. Secure Set is a 5 lb. density foam with a 100 psi., so it even has a great compressive strength. Can't say too much more about Sika other than what is mentioned on the video. But, you can use Secure Set to set posts from very small bird houses all the way up to electric power poles, which is done throughout the U.S.

Keep fire away from the posts and you will be OK. Thank you

    Secure Set ; i'm glad you asked I hope to build a hybrid Fence I have been doing research I was going to use aluminum poles until I researched concrete and aluminum and found its potentially more corrosive than just soil and wood posts As you might imagine the aluminum post supplier recommends a sealer.. So it seems based on costs I'm going to purchase 3 x 3 square steel posts from a local steel distributor trying to figure the best gauge cost was it's $40 14 gauge posts and about 58 bucks for 1/8" wall tube. Per post and that for a 9'4" post for a 6 foot finish product as far as the panel goes I'm currently looking for panels that I can fasten in between my posts with brackets or other type of fastener I'm going to use a girt board at the bottom of my fence ; I may be forced to build my panels but I'm currently looking for a modular choice composite or wood perhaps even steel panels have inquired about powder coating them believe it or not the costs are not out of this world and I think the fence will last 40 years. With zero Wood products. Peace....
