There is a piece we've been playing in my orchestra that had been troubling me for 3 weeks!!!! I ran into this video and realized what I had been doing wrong immediately. As soon as you said DONT STOP YOUR AIR, I knew that's what I was doing when I jumped the breaks in my pieces. Now I have perfected it!!! Can't wait for the next rehearsal now!!!

Awwwww thank you so much!! I'm going to do more work on crossing the break this morning, and I look forward to trying out what you have shown us here. I find crossing the break really difficult, because as soon as I go up the octave, the awful squeaking starts!! My problems are caused by fingering issues so this video here is extremely helpful to me. I'm determined to get my clarinet playing better with lots less squeaks!! It's going to be a busy weekend as I also play oboe, soprano and alto sax, flute, piano and church organ!! Obviously I won't be playing them all this weekend, and hubby and I won't be going to church tomorrow so I won't be playing the organ, but I will be playing lots of woodwind, and the last couple of days I have been busy practising my soprano sax which is getting better too. Have a smashing Easter weekend!! 🤩

This is the stuff they don't show you in fingering charts, but it is absolutely vital to play certain phrases smoothly. Thanks! The other problem I am running into is how to play E with the alternative fingering (with the side key on the outside). Very hard to reach for me while keeping the other holes closed. Also, my middle A sounds awfully flat sometimes, and I cannot figure out why...

I think you are talking about low E with the right pinky? And second space A….this response is for that:) It can take a while to trust the balance I’d the instrument, particularly if hands are small to extend the pinky to the lowest right hand key WHILE keeping it relaxed. Stay patient and intentional in your practice. As far as the A, it is one of the most movable notes on the instrument and if you are voicing low it will be impacted more. Also that key may not open enough. It gets bent sometimes. Hope this helps. Thank for watching and commenting

Actually if you can't pop from a C to a G with the register key it's more often than not a voicing (tongue position) issue, especially with beginners. Sure, embouchure can be an issue but this is often interpreted as a direction to bite the high notes into sounding, especially when just briefly referring to the embouchure in passing. One of the primary functions of an embouchure is to set up the proper voicing. Yes, reeds can be too soft but there is also the danger of using a reed that's too hard just to get the high notes to speak. Getting the tongue up by the top molars in back is key. Say that word, "key", and turn it into a loud steady clear hiss. This gives an idea of what should be happening when you are blowing through the clarinet.

I have tried so much to play the combination #F-B-G-B-A-#G-B, not getting the B immediately because the fingers didn’t cover the holes or the sound wasn’t how it should be on the B. This was such a helpful video. Thank you!

Hi, thank you for valuable advices. i have one question - as I understand from the video I can sometimes close the holes and the tone sonds "the same" as with open holes - so the question is: When can I close the "lower" hole(s) and the note will sound the same as if I will let the hole(s) open? Are these exactly the cases when there is one (or more) holes "in the middle" left open? Thank you.

Hi! Ab A and Bb you can have a lot of fingers down on either hand. G can have a fair numbers of fingers down as well. Anything below that you can NOT put any fingers down. A lot of the time, the pitch and tone of the note will improve when these resonant fingers are down

Just beginning. What mouthpiece and reed combination will be best to cross the break easiest? I have 2 functioning clarinets. Selmer Soloist, Jupiter. My all wood1968 Normandy needs a CLA and pads. I just purchased it from a freezing cold pawn shop for $60.00 without a case. ( it didn't split whew)

I am not sure there is “best” combination of mouthpiece and reed. Having a mouthpiece that works right - could be anything from a Fobes Debut on up to the most expensive mouthpiece in the world - what does matter is that your air is poised and your reed is neither toooooo hard are tooooo soft. Making sure your instrument is functioning right is also important because all the keys have to close well (unlike the lower register where it is less forgiving)

Hi again. When practicing register key play I get this strange thing - when I press register key, play some note (ie high) and while still blowing I release the register key, the note played is still (high) as if I have register key pressed. And only after I stop blowing and then starting to blow again, the note is played correctly (low). Is it normal or is it some bad clarinet mechanics? (Clarinet is new.) It seems like the blowing air prevents the register key hole to be closed even when the register key is not pressed... (Maybe I should try to film myself from the side to see what is happening...) Thank you for any suggestions how to solve this problem.

Based on what you are describing - your clarinet is working great and you are playing it properly. When you release the register key (except on middle line Bb) the clarinet should not go down to the lower register on its own. It would take a break or change in the airstream to make that happen. It's not just normal, its a positive thing

@@honza1859 The airstream needs only to be disrupted minimally. An incredibly light tongue or microscopic change in air stream will get it down where it needs to be. One of the biggest challenges on the clarinet is playing a legato downward interval over a register break

Dear Jay - have been playing the clarinet a while but I notice the quality of B & C (middle of stave) of the clarion register just don't match the richness of the chalumeau notes - there is a distinct change in timbre (I think is the right word). Is it me or the instrument? or mouthpiece thogh I've tried some different mouthpieces.

Timbre is exactly the right word! Middle of the staff b and c should be pretty good sounding notes if you clarinet is working right. The richness of the chalumeau is hard to beat. Usually things are pretty good from low E to thumb F. G-Bb gets pretty thin and then the clarion (middle of sfaff B to thumb C) sound pretty good again. Not to self promote, too much anyway (hopefully), this video should help even out the registers….and maybe there is a leak in your instrument that is causing you challenges and you don’t know it. kzread.info/dash/bejne/ia2epsGBmba9dJM.html
