We're taking gaming to the next level with Donkey Kong bongos, also known as DK bongos. That's right, we're ditching the regular gamecube controllers and instead it’s retro gaming bongo time!
First up, we have some rhythm games that were made for the bongos. Donkey Konga gameplay is... an absolute blast with these bad boys. The bongos are so responsive and the sound effects are just amazing, it's like you're really in the game.
But we're not stopping there, we're taking things up a notch and playing Jungle Beat with bongos. This game was already an adventure on its own, but playing it with bongos takes it to a whole new level of fun. Trust me, you're going to want to give this a try.
Now, you might be wondering, "Can you really play games like Dark Souls with bongos?" And the answer is yes, you can! We're going to show you just how it's done. It's definitely a challenge, but it's a challenge worth taking on.
So, if you're ready to take your gaming to the next level, grab your Donkey Kong bongos and let's get started!

Fun fact: Reggie HATED Donkey Konga and felt it was a stain on DK's reputation as a platform giant. While I think that's a bit excessive, I also can't pretend like the only thing noteworthy about it isn't the comedic value of DK play a bongo rendition of Smashmouth.

@oscarzx n It wasn't supposed to be a reboot. They just used DK as a vessel to hold the game that they wanted to make. I used to play divekick with donkey konga bongos. The builds at UFGT used these custom controllers with popin music buttons, it was very satisfying and all the menus only used 2 buttons. I also played persona 4 arena with it once, for whatever reason my converter constantly sent a downback input so I could play on p1 side and just do auto combo or DP. It's not really possible to win like that but it's funny

Here in Malaga, Spain, we celebrate an event called RetroPixel focused on retro-computers and retro-consoles since 10 years ago. One thing we have every year is the Donkey Kong Bongos. Every year we see kids enjoying them and playing them from morning to closing hour of both days long of the event. The bongos are something weird, I'll not deny it, but I've seen the kids enjoying them even without knowing the game. It's certainly something of interest to analyze.

When the GameCube was still on the shelf at GameStop around the time of the Wii, I bought Donkey Konga 2 and 2 pairs of bongos for my older brother and I. Worked out a deal with my mom with giftcards I had for another store at the time. The bongos we first owned were Pelican, not the official Nintendo ones. I wouldn't get those until a few years ago from a retro game store, but both worked about the same. But one thing I learned recently was that clapping was only one of a few options to activate the middle of the bongos for input, and found that I could blow air around it to clap in the games harder than I ever could before - a silly way to rack up points in the long sections but useful nonetheless. I have tried to play Cars the Video Game with DK Bongos, but aside from a lack of joystick, it was a flop. My main goal was to play the minigame where you input button combinations as Guido to repair the cars at a pit stop. Problem is, the game can ask for any button combination in any given order, including buttons not native to the Bongos or the Active Life Challenge mat on the Wii (GameCube controller input): both joysticks, Z button, L and R, can be there just as much as standard face buttons. But fun to try anyways!

You've finally done it, Mr. Uncle Derek. You flipped that switch in my brain that made me go "Heh, bongos" when I saw them at my local retro store, to "I should see if they still have those bongos and a copy of Jungle Beat." You just seem to have that magic power to make those stupid games I barely thought twice about into something magical enough to go back into the proverbial Cave of Wonders to dig up. I still haven't played RE4 in any form, and that's the bizarre hill I seem to have pre-dug my grave on, though.

Ever heard of DiveKick? It's a 1-on-1 2D fighter where you have to fight while using only two buttons: Jump and DiveKick. First player to land an attack wins a round, and first player to win five rounds wins the match. You might be thinking this has nothing to do with the DK bongos, but if you have the game on your PC and a GameCube-to-USB controller adapter, you can use the bongos with said fighting game.

DK Barrell Blast (aka DK Bongo Blast) is one of the great lost titles for the GC/Wii. The GameCube prototypes of the game had DK Bongos support, and it was even demonstrated by Nintendo in a video. They ripped out support for them and made it a Wiimote and Nunchuck game. I love Wii motion controls. But not on this unplayable game. I REALLY wish someone would NintendoLeak™ the prototype GC version with Bongos support so we could finally play the final DKBongos game, which I am certain would be FAR better than the gimped Wii version we got. :(

DK Jungle Beat is seriously one of the most fun, smooth, and beautifully-designed platformers out there. I had a friend who owned it but without the Bongos so we played it with a GameCube controller: still very much a wonderfully time with a very unique control scheme. This also allowed for a sort of unofficial co-op in the game as it would accept input from all 4 ports on the GameCube so we could "alternate" through some of the tougher levels without needing to physically pass controllers. I must say though I would NOT recommend the Wii Play Control version: it alters the game mechanics MUCH more than the other Wii Play Control games to the point where the game is much less enjoyable and coherent as a result.

Here's the two noteworthy things the New Play Control Version of Jungle Beat did (According to the video Scott The Woz did on the New Play Control games) 1. Added new levels. 2. Shuffled already existing stuff around.

I own two CIB pairs of DK Bongos. I’ve also been following this channel for like 15 years or whenever it started. It, and I, are both equally stupid. Thank you Derek.

I initially thought that the bongos were made for Jungle Beat, it was a fantastic game worth getting the bongos for.

The actual physical taiko drums for Taiko no Tatsujin are (in my experience) pretty expensive, but the DK Bongos look like they're fairly cheap on the second hand market. Strongly considering trying to pick up a pair or two for drumming game purposes. It helps that I already have adapters for Gamecube controllers.

Ironically I hate the camera system in Galaxy, but in Sunshine it works for me 99.9% of the time. Love the video, as usual :)

Rhythm platformer, you say? Sounds like you need to check out on of the most hidden of 2020's gems; Mad Rat Dead. I still hum along to the bangers in that game even to this day.

Imagine Louis' family seeing him with Bongo and thinking he is getting into music. And then he tells them he is just going to play Dark Souls.

Derek turns over chalkboard, a well worn stick of white chalk brushes back and fourth. A room of Victorian professors scoff and drop their monocles. 'Jungle Best, the ancestor of Mario Galaxy' The headlines scold this foolish man, this unconventional buffoon. Time and science will remember this man as a hero.

I always found it easier to hit the side of the bongo rather than clapping.
