Secretariat A Moment of Glory

Спорт

A tribute to the 1973 Peakness Stakes where Secretariat captures the coveted 2nd jewel of the Triple Crown and a nation's heart
Perhaps my friends, just perhaps, we have forgotten as a society to understand the concept of "the Hero". Society and "celluloidwood" as a whole has promulgated the "Tragic Hero", or the "anti-hero", or the "underdog" as the only thing that should be praised. I, my good amigos, refuse never to deny greatness because it is greatness. Herein is a video tribute I created about Secretariat in his 1973 Preakness Race, - the middle jewel in the crown. At this point Secretariat was not racing his mighty foe Sham, no, as great as Sham was; it was not within him to challenge Secretariat. Secretariat had moved past possibly the second greatest horse in thoroughbred history(Sham), he was now racing against the Fury of history with only himself as a point of reference!

I’m so glad that the incredible move Secretariat makes in the Preakness is shown and highlighted. It’s the most incredible I’ve ever seen in racing. Considering it’s early in the race, horses are fresh and he passes them like their statues. Then proceeds to run away with the race. 50+ years of watching racing I’ve never seen a move like Secretariat made. I was fortunate to see him race live at Woodbine, his final race. Consider myself very lucky to see the greatest racehorse ever!

I agree with everything you said about MOW and Sham. You're right. When people compare Secretariat to ANY horse, it's unfair to the other horses. Sham was more equal to MOW. Secretariat was God's way of letting us humans see what perfection is...even if his supernatural creature wasn't a human. Secretariat was truly a miracle of nature....and the only one.

Sham breaks the Derby record and comes in 2nd. He then breaks the Preakness record and comes in 2nd. He was a magnificent racehorse. Sure, we have had Affirmed/Alydar since then, who were great horses but they would have never been able to compete against these 2 in my opinion.

Further more I saw SHAM win a race before the kD, and he won the race by at least three/ four lengths and Pincay was BEATING SHAM(STILL) WHY?

You had to understand it in its time and place. I was 8 months old when Citation won the Triple. I was 26 when Secretariat did. We had politicians that seemed to care more about power than the people. We needed a hero. The humans were all flawed. And along came Secretariat shining in the sun like burnished copper with that red coat. Record timeinthe Derby. And this Preakness looked like a Ferrari running with grandpa's sedans. But could he win the Belmont. So many had failed at the mile and a half. And boy did he win the Belmont. And Ronnie hand rode him through three races. Just guiding him to a clear path and letting him run. Oh yeah the horse liked people. He would lift his head and look at them. Like aint I great. Let me show you.

Man O' War was the second greatest race horse of all time. Only Man O' War could have given Secretartiat the race of his life. Secretariat only toyed with Sham. You can tell by the way he stayed way behind by several lengths and then overpowered him in a few seconds. In the Belmont, Secretariat decided not to wait...and you saw the results. Sham ended up dead last from exhaustion. He just wasn't physically in Secretariat or Man O' War's league. No other horses in the history of racing are.

My opinion, with respect to other feats in sports, is that you must look at the KD, PS AND the Belmont:for the horse to have run the first 2 legs in record time and THEN to do what he did in the Belmont is unfathomable. Sham was ,also, a large-hearted horse,I have heard 18 pounds.Sham ran phenomenal times in the KD and PS..you see what that does to even a great racer in that Sham was spent by the time the Belmont came. Again, for Sec to do what he did after the KD and PS is otherworldly!!!
