Second major snowstorm hits the Northwest

Overnight snowfall smacked much of western Washington, leaving several inches to a foot of snow in some areas.

We dont care how much snow East coast gets Seattle is a large city with Hills and houses on Mountains commuting here is going up/down hills once snow freezes you cant drive. Without good tires and chains here no one cant commute Regardless of how much other states without mountains get and claim to be better snow drivers.

Visited Seattle from Milwaukee Wi for our 20th anniversary in the beginning of July, 2013. Ten days of perfect no rain weather. Absolutely loved everything. Rode the Amtrak Cascades train to Bellingham and back. Did ALL the sights, sounds, coffee houses, neighborhoods, sidewalk cafe's, architecture, ferries, Pike Place, Bainbridge, West Seattle, fantastic Central Library (a world-class icon), chowder, bakeries, Fremont, "original" Starbucks, the light rail from Sea-Tac to downtown and back each day (fast, relaxing, inexpensive, clean, local sights views), great resale shops, art galleries, "pocket" parks, Monorail (we knew it was only about a mile long, but historic '62 world's fair). And LOTS of walking, and, of course.... the "fish tossing"! Glad we went then, considering recent events and Street life.

Thanks, It was our first time to Pacific Northwest. One of three cities on our "retire to" list. Sadly, inspite of our affection, we had to acknowledge the ever present "rain" reality. Second was Boulder, but too $'s and expensive (as is Seattle), the third was Madison Wi. beautiful college town with five substantial lakes, epi-center for world class mid-century architecture (Frank Lloyd Wright), excellent food and culture, local water availability, away from all the west coast weather/volcanic potential, minimal street people, booming economy, picturesque, and, while not cheap, doable. Lots to see and do.

Winter tires ? Yes, of course we have snow tires. We would put them to use on four days average per year. For those few total hours it is best to just stay home. As you see, not many cars on the road. The Costco in Mount Vernon was busier on Thursday evening (before the projected snowfall) than any evening before Christmas. The typical winter in Seattle involves little to no snow with above freezing temperatures many years.

The governor must have that much in his yard, too, because he declared a state of emergency! Maybe someday the brave souls of the Seattle area will get a few years of life experience east of Issaquah. Then they can come back and make a little more sense instead of pushing their drama on the rest of the country. Declarations of emergency are supposed to be for when there is so much snow the roofs of buildings are collapsing and there are 7-foot drifts across the roads so people can't get through or respond to emergencies--things like that. I imagine the governors of Idaho and Montana and other inland states are getting a chuckle about the people in Washington in a panic over nothing. It's winter and a little bit of snow is just for taking it easy and having fun, not declaring emergencies.

Plow the roadways and throw the salt / spray the liquid on the roads and stop complaining about the roads. Washington state is in the northwest corner of the country by Canada and are often getting snow in the winter. If municipalities can't afford to clear the roads well than at least do the best can do clear the roads. This is ridiculous.

Most of them have a head like a rock and only know what they want. A flat screen LED television on one side and ignorant - hate and stupidity on the other. Things happen here lately and everything collapses. In short, there scared of their own shadow.

I used to live in New England so I understand your laughter. But you also don't have 14,000 feet mountains. This area is similar to San Francisco. I began to understand why things virtually shut down when a snow like this occurs. Queen Anne Hill (the neighbourhood I live in) is 450 feet high, about the same height as a lot of the smaller mountains in Vermont. It's quite dangerous here right now (although it is also quite lovely).
