Searching for Chinese Mexicans (El Barrio Chino)

Searching for Chinese Mexicans (El Barrio Chino)
Growing up in the western civilization as a Chinese American, you only hear about Chinatown enclaves in major cities like San Francisco, Vancouver, and Sydney to name a few. I was intrigued by Chinese settlers in Mexico and the history and their food behind it.

In Mexicali, especially, you will find a big cantonese community. You would also find Chinese speaking schools. You better brush up on your cantonese. Many Chinese catholics. Many interracial marriages. In conclusion, you will not be disappointed.

I’m from Mexicali! We have the largest Sino Mexican community in the country. La Chinesca is the name of our “Chinatown” here in Mexicali. There is definitely more Chinese food restaurants here than Mexican food ones. They also recently have started to develop plans to build more buildings and statues to honor China and the immigrants who came to Mexicali :)

I’ve heard that the Chinese Food in Mexicali is really special and the chasiu is legendary. I’ve lived in Guangzhou (student program) and Monterrey Park, so I’ve eaten some really good food. I’ve been living in the Bajío for the past 10 years, and the Chinese food situation is not great (not great for Japanese food, either). There’s a pretty good coreano restaurant in Querétaro near the H.E.B. The food I miss most from Los Angeles, my birthplace, is dim sum. Second on the list is all the various forms of Asian noodles. Maybe I should check out Monterrey. With all the Japanese, Chinese, and Korean companies doing business in Monterey, maybe I’ll find some good asian restaurants. Otherwise I’ll have to wait for my next visit to L.A.

@@flet5726 Some Korean communities in reforma/ la zona rosa and you can find a few Chinese communities in the centro of the city don't really know the name but it's like a plaza, you can find jewelry and stuff in the 2 first floors but a lot of Asians concentrate in the 3rd floor where's like a food court. You will not find Chinese people in the barrio chino but most of those establishments in the zocalo are own by Chinese descendants or Chinese immigrants. But there aren't a lot of Chinese communities like in USA, you can also contact with the embassies they often have cultural stuff about the community you are interested in and helps you to contact with other people. Also for you to find a community is very complicated many Chinese immigrants changed their name/last name when they started to being persecuted by the authorities in 1910 so many Mexican might be Chinese and they don't even know that they are is why is hard to find a community like in USA en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chinese_immigration_to_Mexico#:~:text=Hundreds%20of%20Chinese%20in%20northern,homes%20and%20businesses%20as%20well.

This is the historical Chinatown and the families are like 5th generation. Today the New Chinatown is in Colonia Viaducto Piedad where recent Chinese immigrants live and have many businesses! They rarely speak Spanish and the food is AMAZING! Non of that mexicanized Chinese food! Not sure what part of China they’re mainly from but if you speak Cantonese or mandarin you should be good! The overseas Chinese are no longer in there, many of them have died and their families have being mixed and lost all the traditions, mexican Chinese, we are alll over around, is just not a close community. My grandpa used to own a small restaurant and he used to play mahjong in Chinatown, where in the old days chinese reunite to gamble. The new Chinatown as someone said before is in other neighborhood, near to viaducto subway station. The famous and big old Chinatown is at the north, in Mexicali. You can also find Mexican Chinese in Chiapas and Tampico, Tamaulipas. The new immigrants are almost everywhere in the country. If you ever come back to CDMX, and you are interested on history of the overseas Chinese from 1900s.. Let me know I can present someone specialized in the topic. :)

Hey, I just found your video. The Chinese community of Mexico City is centered in another completely different place, more to the south. The neighbourhood is called Viaducto-Piedad, near the underground station Viaducto. There you can see a lot of people of Chinese origin, businesses of all kinds, and really good restaurants. The so-called "Barrio chino" that you visited is just a tourist trap, located where the first community installed at the beginning of 20th century, but where just some cooks are related to the community by now.

Great video sir. I lived in the state of Sonora, Huatabampo back from 2013-2014. My dads side of the family is from this town in Mexico. One day went to the mall they had there and inside was a fast food Chinese restaurant. To my surprise the whole kitchen staff was Chinese. I asked about it and was told that there’s a pretty big Chinese community in that town and for the people coming from China, it’s easier to get setup in Mexico than it is in the United States. I was legitimately surprised as I only seen the Chinese community in Mexicali. There’s also a small community of Vietnamese and the name Lam is pretty prominent there since the early 50’s. Thanks for the video.

I know a migrant, Ms Li, she's been here for the past 20 years and shes been able to move her family little by little here to Mexico. I also had a good friend in school who had Chinese ancestry. Not to mention all the ither ones I've met in plazas and malls when buying chinese food, and hearing them suddenly yelling to their children to work better in fluent chinese lol. Man, they're all incredible people and I for one am hugely grateful to share the same bit space and time with them. Welcome to Mexico carnal 🇨🇳🇲🇽🇺🇸

They all make the Panda Express food taste better! I just finished up Pad Thai, sweet & sour chicken and spring egg rolls, then I looked it up on KZread Asian food in México, that’s how I found your channel. It’s hilarious from watching you eat the dumplings!!!(facial reactions) Hahaha....

That is because Mexicans are not used to the taste of Asian food and with the Panda Express the person gradually enters what Asian food is, then people can try another dish and the taste of Asian food will not be So strange to their palates, in western countries Asian restaurants sell food that they know Westerners will like, they know that people will buy that food and thus earn money, in short they sell it to Westerners They know that they will like it and that way they will not lose money, lately Westerners are more open to trying Asian food for example I, I have already tried real dishes, traditional Asian dishes in my case Vietnamese, Chinese, Korean and Japanese food and I like most of the recipes, I got used to the flavors but there are still flavors that are too strong for me like fish sauce.

There is artist level sushi called Rokai if you are ok with spending a bit more. Also, for asian imported goods in Morelia try the TOYO Foods store! Also a fun Hawaiian fact, here in Hawaii there are loads of Chinese folks who come from immigrants from China, currently majority of the Chinese here in Hawaii are considered "local" due to the fact lots of em were born and raised here and act like any Native Hawaiian or local to Hawaii. In the early 19th century our King Kalākaua, King of Hawaii, had thousands of Chinese folks come down on steam ships to work in our many sugar plantation was the base income for Hawaii at the time. Many of them stayed the rest of their lives here and had full rights as any Native Hawaiian did.

@@isamarperez5183 Because the people who migrated to the America's are extinct, well the people where they originated. Natives have common ancestors with people from Korea and many other North Eastern Asian people, Just because you have a common ancestor you are not going to come out as Korean or Chinese in origin in your DNA tests, hence why I said we share common ancestors. The reason why it's getting you as being Native American in DNA is because those ancient people that came through the ice bridge 15,000 to 20,000 their tribes are extinct and it's mainly the Native people in the America's that are the last remnants of those people.

I think the barrio chino is more like a touristic area in our culture so it could make sense why you didn't find many chinese-mexicans, I think maybe chinese descendants would choose a not so crowded area to settle, or probably they blended and integrated enough to be more spread

I´m from Mexico and this video kind of reminds me of my cousin who went to the chinese province of shenzhen where he is currently working and he visited a mexican "restaurant" run by chinese people and the tacos were extremely "americanized" and those are far from the real tacos. But hey, the intention is what counts haha, also there is a mexican restaurant run by a mexican and its actually more accurate as much as they can when they are in the other side of the world. The same happens in Mexico City, there is REAL chinese restaurants in mexico city but they are not in "El barrio chino" but in the south of the city and some other in the west of the city like polanco or so. Actually "EL barrio" is just an atraction built by chinese people who occupied the zone a few years ago but the chinese population in CDMX is spreaded all over the city and not just in one place.
