SEAN SCULLY 1/3 - The Irish Smile that Changed the Art World

Sean Scully, the esteemed Irish-American artist, was born in 1945 in Dublin. His artistry spans a diverse range of mediums, including paintings, sculptures, drawings, watercolors, photography, and printmaking. Notably, his works often feature stripes, blocks, and grids, showcasing his unique artistic vision.
Scully's life has been an extraordinary journey, marked by resilience and a strong connection to his Irish heritage. His parents, war deserters, found refuge with Gypsies when they were homeless in Dublin during his birth. This nomadic lifestyle led them to London's impoverished Old Kent Road slums and later to the Irish ghettos of Highbury, where discrimination against the Irish was evident through signs like "No Irish, no blacks, no dogs."
Despite a tumultuous childhood that he describes as a disaster, Scully never succumbed to victimhood. Instead, he viewed the world as a realm of boundless possibilities. Influenced profoundly by the song "When Irish Eyes Are Smiling," he believed in the transformative power of Irish smiles to illuminate the world. This conviction became a driving force, empowering him to believe that his own smile could make a difference.
Religion played a significant role in Scully's early life as he attended a convent school. The stations of the cross paintings in the shed-like church left a deep impression on him, particularly the colors of black, dirty white, and red. His grandmother's faux cathedral stained glass paper further ignited his artistic sensibilities, inspiring him with its interplay of light and color.
A turbulent chapter unfolded with the family's move to South London. The environment was chaotic, and Scully became entangled in a hooligan lifestyle, temporarily losing touch with his artistic connection. The pressure cooker-like atmosphere in his home perpetuated strife, compounding the challenges he faced.
