Sean Scully feels like a sentinel, a bodyguard, he sees himself as a defender and is not at all bothered if he is in the minority. To occupy this singular role corresponds to its nature.
Scully associates his paintings with an ethical position, without being dogmatic. His work is based on structural fidelity rather than a commercial concept. Scully encourages avoiding victimization and persevering despite the difficulties. He refers to his own experience with galleries and emphasizes that determination and paying the high price of an artistic life is necessary.
In his personal beliefs, Sean Scully favors conviction over doubt. He is open to listening and learning, and he describes himself as politically centered, as he believes this position to be the most viable, unlike left-wing or right-wing ideologues. He is uninterested in opinions, preferring facts and history to form his point of view. Scully reiterates his faith in painting, his belief in its goodness, and emphasizes his immense commitment to this art form.
