Yes! I find it very odd. I assume it is because it is very trendy to be Maori so they decide to ignore the majority of their heritage, and just focus on the 1/16th or whatever percentage they have. Regarding Mihirangi/Joanne, I always thought that, as she is so blonde and with such a fine bone structure, and thought how sad that she clearly feels ashamed of the majority of her heritage and just focusses on a tiny part of her heritage. I am also 1/16th Maori, and whakapapa to two iwi, but am also proud of the other 15/16ths of my background, and find them all fascinating. What a shame she clearly doesn’t feel the same. It comes across odd when she talks about colonisation, etc when just to look at her anyone can see she is mainly descended from colonisers!!!

There was a fad in universties and schools in the early 90s for students with minute traces of maori lineage to change their given names to the maori equivalent. Joanne forbes is obviously a product of that fad.

Heard something similar. I think both answers are correct. Funding is finished but delivery of articles is supposed to go to 2026. Funny that’s the next election time frame….. Almost like it’s pay off the media for this electoral cycle and if Labour don’t get in again in 2026, no more money. Great incentive to keep pushing the woke agenda.

I watched the interview with David Seymour and Shane Jones. She certainly went after David Seymour with regard to the Atlas group, looking for a conspiracy looking to discredit his position. As you say hardly and partial. I think there needs to be a decoration of interest from these journalists that might be a first start but also I wonder what’s going to happen with this fund and with the board of television New Zealand I mean we need to somehow bring and partiality back to the fourth estate. We had a reasonable go with it many years ago, even then it was probably a little bit wobbly, but there was a reasonable attempt to ask the hard questions even by journalist who obviously were lifting. It would be interesting to see if we could get an honest count on the number of journalists in the news media that actually voted for the left would be interesting wouldn’t it thanks for your insight and probing question. @@alistermacpherson7120 I suggest you look at photos of Māori from early photographs, which are easily avalable, on NZ History or Te Ara websites. Look at people like Pomare, Carroll, and the leaders of the late 19th century/early 20th century, or Apirana Ngata and his era of the 1930s on. Look at Michael King’s book about moko, and see the old kuia. I suggest you look at the first definition of Māori from the Waitangi Tribunal, which was someone with 50% Māori ancestry. I look at the photographs of my great-great grandmother on my mother’s side, and my great-great grandmother on my father’s side, and I see it there. Whereas I look like Joanna/Mihinarangi, blonde, and with little discernible Māori heritage to observe. Obviously we can still be proud of our Māori heritage, but to deny the rest, the majority, of our background lacks balance and is not the complete truth.

According to her wiki page and the link to some stuff puff from 2014, her only tertiary training is in language. I think it shows in her one-dimensional interviewing. There's no sense of establishing plausible fact and interpretation out of spin, swirl, confusion, and hearsay. I don't hear a theory of knowledge, an episteme, or impartiality before facts. A decent journalist with a humanities degree might internalise this stuff and doesn't need to exhibit it. An activist seems tissue-thin without it.
