Seal Saved From Shark Entanglement
It is not the first time that a seal got entangled in a St Joseph's shark spine, we have seen this situation before. Seals do not usually prey on sharks, but when they do, it’s a clear sign that their usual food resources are dropping Therefore, they have to eat what they can get to stay alive. A shark entanglement is not as life-threatening as a plastic entanglement, but it can severely weaken the seal.

That long spike in the seal's chest must have been so painful! It's sad when the seals must resort to an alternate food source...one that fights back! Hope you won't be seeing more seal carcasses on the beach. Thanks, team!

Smaller sharks are part of their diet. Remember back when OCN had to remove a small shark from the throat of a young seal?
@frostyfantrash

@@RL-RLaccording to them the seals will only hunt sharks when their normal food sources are limited.
@RL-RL
2 ай бұрын
@@frostyfantrash I can see that happening., but they almost always have pods of baitfish to follow and feed on.This is why you always see them entangled in leftover trash from the fishing boats near shore. But they are also opportunistic feeders, and do eat sharks if they see one. Food is food.
Lack of food supply indicator: seals hunting St. Joseph sharks. Thank you for rescuing the seal from the shark spike. Heal quickly, find abundant food and live long. ❤❤
Surprisingly feisty considering the bigger seals get a bit sleepy from the venom the sharks barb produces. Glad you could help him.
Just very grateful that the seal was "despiked." And none of the OCN guys were stabbed along the way!❤
Thank you my heroes for saving her ❤️ greetings to all 😊🙋🏼

Although that barbed spike had already caused a serious infection, luckily the seal still looked quite strong. Thanks guys, for removing that poisonous spike.🙏💕🦭
The spike was so long and deep, the relief to the seal must have been immediate when you pulled it out. Thank you!!!

So glad to see a natural save from something non toxic, and the shark didn't get the seal!. Anyone here remember the seal that had a baby shark stuck in its throat? Great job Team!

actually, these spikes are toxic (or venomous to be more precise)

The first dorsal spine is venomous, it’s not innocuous though non plastic. It’s the SJ shark’s natural defense. It’s a foreign object that can be a source of infection and can impair hunting ability. I can’t imagine something that long snd nasty impaled in my own throat, when I whine over just an invisible splinter in my hand! Natural doesn’t always mean safe. Uranium, petroleum, arsenic, poisonous plants and mushrooms, microorganisms that cause epidemics…. all natural. The point is that it indicates these seals aren’t finding enough of what they really need to eat, and that comes squarely back to human activity. Glad the team removed it, thank you guys!
Oh that was so painful, can we imagine that dreadful hook stuck in his neck, that poor baby thank goodness OCN was there to save him. Another seal saved from indescribable pain. Thank you OCN heroes, you epitomes the word hero. Thank you
Nasty looking thing, poor seals always seem to have something that could be dangerous to cope with, glad you saw him. Thankyou OCN .🤗💝🏴

We are unfortunately not solving the problem, but only treating the symptoms of the plastic crisis with our rescues. These videos aim to show the consequences of this pollution and create a change to tackle its roots - namely our addiction to single-use plastics, the lack of law enforcement at sea, and the shortcomings of the recycling industry.
Thank you so much my Gs.. you are amazing.. NYC One ❤ to you all
Verdadeiros heróis! Parabéns ❣️
Hi all! Wow, what a huge thorn. He caused a lot of pain, but now the seal is safe. The main thing is that there are more fish. You shouldn't eat these sharks. Oh boy that's so sad they are desperate for food.
Cor blimey. Im shocked at the size. And if we stopped fishing for a month, our marine life would be able to eat their own food source. We need to scrap fishing for the wire too. Our poor marine life is being starved out, and killed by the lines. And obviously our plastic. 😢

I recall, from previous rescues from Saint Joseph shark spikes, that the barbs are poisonous. That must add to the pain and infection. Thanks for the save.
It was disheartening to see that seal with the shark spike in his neck. I am so grateful that team OCN is there watching out and rescuing these animals. 🦭🙏❤️🇺🇲🇳🇦
Those are such nasty things. And how on earth did they end up with the name St. Joseph's sharks? Either way, thanks so much for rescuing that pup, Team OCN, he must have been in considerable and constant pain.

at the end of your videos you should give everyone tips on how to properly take care of trash so it doesnt hurt animals...or tips on how to get more fish in the ocean

There is no real answer to that, except stop using it, which we all know is unfortunately extremely difficult or even impossible. We need people, governments and industry to work together.
Can someone explain how a shark sharp bit gets stuck in seals throat. It was difficult to see and I did not know what ai was looking at. However, looked extremely nasty
