Great work Rodney. I've read the rulebook a couple of times now and am in agreement with others that it isn't laid out particularly well. Your explanation of the setup made it seem much simpler and the rules are much less convoluted than the rulebook. I'm certain your video will make it more approachable for people to get into. Thanks a lot for your help in advance for when I get my copy delivered and to the table!

Sometimes a game is more effort than you may want to put in, and that can be disappointing, but sometimes it happens. Games should be fun, and if it feels like the effort won't be fun enough, you might want to pass on this one and try something else. Thanks for the kind words on the video!

I agree that could be fun, but I feel this type of game just might not work for that. They would have to put up quite a few videos in order to get through the whole campaign, and because it is a legacy game, he would have to purchase another copy in order to play it with his friends.

It is a great game, we had a lot of fun thank you. Your video really helped to help it run smoothly. I do have one thing I would like to clear up? I believe you are on able to perform one explore action between both your ship and the same for raiding? Not one explore / raid for both ship? I just want to make sure we were playing it right, and is it classed as an action for a ship being a support ship in exploration / raid? I hope that makes sense. Any help would be much appreciated. Kind Regards

Hi sorry. What I am wondering is it each of your ships able to perform one explore action, each turn or is it between both your ships you have one exploration action between them? In other words does each ship get to do two of the actions for the chosen guild, or between both ships, you get to do the 2 actions? I hope that makes more sense.

  • @WatchItPlayed

    @WatchItPlayed

    7 жыл бұрын

Ah, I think I see what you are asking. How many ships can do the action is defined by the action itself. For example, when performing the sail action, it says you can move each of your ships. When doing the explore action it says "Explore 1 site". So that's a total of 1 site. If both of your ships are at sites, you can still only do a grand total of "1" explore with that action. Hope that helps.

Thanks for all your help! One last question! We had this scenario in the Prologue: Two ships used in exploration. The flagship's hold is full of goods, the support ship has no goods in it. Following the exploration, the player was awarded a spice. Can he use the support hold or does he just not get the spice? I think that's my last question from our Prologue play-through. Your answers will help us immensely as we progress through the game!

Question. You search a location at an island and succeed in the endeavour. You go through the captains log and read a story that changes the island location to a wood supply. Once putting the sticker on the map do I then put a cube of wood on the location or do I wait till winter?

Just read the rules today, and planning to start our games this Tuesday (fitting the day after Columbus Day here in the USA). As always your videos are great, and in the case of SeaFall it def. helped solidify the rules I just read. Will make get going easy this week. Don't understand why there is a small amount of negativity out there for this game, I think even if it wasn't a Legacy game it looks like tons of fun. The Legacy aspect just makes it even more interesting. Any plans to do a 'Play-thru' with the family like you did with Dead of Winter? Would love to be able to find this (after I played all my games) and see someone else experience. (With that said I know it would be tough to do cause it would be too easy to spoil the gamer for others). Regardless, great video as always!

This wouldn't be a game that I'd be easily able to do a play through of, and so instead, I'm just playing it locally with friends, as we're able. It requires enough of a time commitment, that we need to plan ahead to find the time, which would be tricky if we were trying to play and record at the same time. Glad you liked the video though!

+Alex Pereira sadly, game night was a huge success, meaning too many showed up so we could not play game 1... the prologue makes me feel good though. It's enough discovery and Sharpie use that I know we're in a legacy game, with a good twist at the end to let players get a feel for how things will change later. I won't spoil anything, but I definitely shared about this on the Plaid Hat Podcast this week! (episode 214)

Thanks for the great video! We recently played the prologue and got into a (to us) unresolvable situation: One of us explored a grave site and the captain's book then instructed them to read a specific milestone card - which wasn't in the game since we only had the prologue cards in play. We could also not find that card in any of the unsealed materials. What did we do wrong??

This game calls out for more clarity in the rules that your videos have provided me for other games.

Hey Rodney, This wasn't really highlighted in the video, but can you elaborate a little on the mechanism through which new "stuff" is added to the game? Is that something that only happens between missions (as per the campaign book) or during a session as well? If so, can you explain a little about it? Also, I noticed that you've mentioned the three types of dice symbols but it seems that these do not matter (other than for island effects, possibly) - can I assume that as the game progresses and new rules are introduced, these symbols will become more distinct? Lastly, is there some mechanism or explanation of what to do if you make a (potentially large or permanent) rules mistake (due to the nature of a game where the rules may change)?

  • @WatchItPlayed

    @WatchItPlayed

    8 жыл бұрын

Basically, you'll be instructed at the appropriate time. I can't say when those moments are, because I haven't played though the game either (though we will be starting tonight). As you suggest, it's likely the dice symbols will play a role as game elements are unlocked. No specific method is provided. Players would want to decide on what is most fair for their particular situation.

Great video! We played the Prologue yesterday and there are some rules here and there that need some additional explanation. I think one of the more confusing parts is the carryover from one game to the next through the Winter phase. At minute 9, you talk about refreshing ship upgrades, but these don't carry over from one game to the next. However, I think I may have just answered my own question with this thought: a game may entail more than one year, is that correct? I always just thought you could play an entire game within the confines of one year or set of 6 rounds. But it seems that you could get to winter without getting enough glory points, necessitating a winter refresh. Is that right? That wasn't too clear to me in the rules but makes sense when thinking about a) how the game plays and b) your explanation in this video.

Hey Rodney, Given that this is a "single play through" because of its legacy design is there an option to play through the prologue a couple of times before embarking on the full play? It looks to be fairly complex in nature (which my game group likes) but we would like to have a firm grasp of the rules and the play before making a mistake because of a missed rule etc. I guess my question really boils down to the concern that if we played each scenario through in order and thereby changed the game as we went along would a mistake due to an unknown or misinterpreted rule effectively place a player well behind the proverbial 8 ball and/or ruin their play experience or is there enough leeway to allow players to make errors (which are inevitable ) and yet allow them to remain competitive? Thanks, Chris

  • @WatchItPlayed

This is really tough to answer, as it depends on perceptions and player skill level. Sometimes players feel like a game is beating up on them, while other times a player recognizes that they are just playing poorly :) Depending on the temperament of your group, these perceptions may be different. In the prologue, you do make some permanent changes, in terms of naming things, and some stickers getting placed on islands. Could you instead just leave the stickers off the islands and not name things, for a test play? I think so. I'd avoid reading the final story piece on the final milestone though.

I did hear an episode of Game Design Round Table where Rob Daviau spoke about how in Risk Legacy he had failed to account for exactly that problem, so I would imagine he's accounted for that in this version. Even with just the prologue materials unlocked, it's noticeable that the lower ranked and less successful players get more leeway in what to carry over to the next game.

If I have a ship at an island, and an opponent raids a site on that island, do I count as defending? Also, how do you get permanent enmity on a province? Is that from enmity gained since the last winter or do "at war with" tokens count?

  • @WatchItPlayed

You wouldn't count as defending in that case (but your ships can defend when they are raiding your post). For the enmity question, it might be best for me to direct you to page 21 of the rule book under "Determining Enmity". They give a good example.

A very impressive looking game. I love the expansive personalization as well as the sealed components/rules aspects of the game. The only thing that concerns me though is replay value. You have stickers abound and all the personalization is done with ink...how much replay value is there? I know you don't do reviews, but I would like to get a wide range of opinions concerning a game before I get it. How much replay value do you think this game has?

  • @WatchItPlayed

According to the designer, the game can be played for approximately 15 sessions, but potentially more, if you find the players are not aggressive about exploring. I'll avoid comments on replayability, because I think Legacy games are to be approached differently than non-legacy games - but that's very much a personal point of view.

Hey y'all! We're playing thru the game and I hit on a quirk -- if you sink a ship in one turn, do you give it three damage? The only reason we thought you would is because there are some damage cards that require you to pay money to repair. Thoughts? Also, we had an issue where we explored a site that already had all of its symbols marked up. We think we may have, under the influence, accidentally crossed out the wrong symbol. We decided to just pick one and read it again. Thoughts?

Yep, Michael has that right. Lower to free, would mean, lowering to zero. When it says you can't go "below" 0, it means you can't reduce the cost to a negative value (for example, -$2), and therefore be "owed" money when you buy. :)

I had a similar question: one of the appellations says the leader can take a fortune token each winter (including the first). Each game starts with a winter, so does this mean at the start of each game, right away, the leader can take an extra fortune token? Or will I have to wait until we reach the next winter inside a game? My game group just did the prologue, so we haven't started game 1 yet. Also, we were wondering why there's so many reputation tokens and fortune tokens when it appears we only get them at the start of each game and they don't carry over. My game group for this game only has three people, so we're only using six reputation and fortune tokens total while there's a huge pile of them just sitting there. We couldn't find anything in the rules about them being refreshed in-game.

I'm not sure how they could of - the changes to the game have to carry over from game to game - but you still need the ability to be able to put the game away. Permanent changes would seem to be the only way. Also, it's the intention of games like this to create the experience of making decisions that really matter, and that will impact the future as you keep playing. If you could undo the changes, it would lessen that. I'm not saying any gamer should like that method, but this is part of the appeal to some players.

This is a great game. But I know I've been playing it wrong! I just like exploring the islands and collecting treasures. I don't even bother fighting the other players half the time!

Hey, it's your game, you can play as you like :) But these videos can help if you DO have rules questions :)

Wow! A very complicated game. I usually only play games that are one or two players at minimum. I think I'll pass on this game.

Keep in mind, what people find fun is entirely up to them. Complicated does not mean it will be more fun for everyone. That's what we hope the video will help provide - enough information to decide for yourself, if the game would be what you and your gaming group is looking for.

Writing on the cards?? Non-removable Stickers?? Blasphemous!! (I know someone is going to name one of their character's Prince Poopypants, lol).

It's games like these that I imagine would work well with tabletop simulator for those that like to keep their items re-usable. :)

I'm going with Lucky Luke for my character.
