Colin Furze made one himself, and it works well. Tyco RC made their own as a toy in 2003. This truck was made in the 1970s. We need more vehicles like this.

I recall someone using this drive train in a robot fighting competition too. Though I think their drive system used a slightly different configuration to the screw itself.

Very cool. Of course this vehicle is still relevant, the terrain hasn't changed.

Thing is simplified genius. Does exactly that it was built to do and has some nice touches. Even has the floorboard running all the way around the vehicle so no matter if you’re in deep mud or even the water you can still get out from the cabin and go around to the cargo area. Utility first, looks second. The way it’s supposed to be

This vehicle is distinguished from its wheeled counterparts in the light weight of its rotating cylinders and the increase in both the contact area of these cylinders and the coefficients of friction with the surface due to the auger, which increases its friction force with the soft surfaces, which enables the vehicle to easily walk over unstable surfaces such as snow, sand, mud, and even over water, so that These cylinders act like paddles.

The split design on the auger looks like a substantial improvement. Great stuff.

instead of using giant screws, just roll over the terrain on giant half-inflated air bags. The drive wheels press against the bags, and the bags then roll over the soft soil.

Would love to track down one of the older ones, (Likely next to impossible in Canada.) Fix it up if I can, and put it through its paces. Maybe I'd take it out to the bush during just before spring when the last of the snow is melting and everything gets REAL boggy. See what it can do.

@@warpey5632 - I think it's just that this form of locomotion just isn't very efficient. It's not clear what the fuel mileage economy is for this kind of vehicle compared to vehicles with tracks, treads, etc. I think this type of screw drive could be very useful for a tunneling vehicle, though.

yep don't think it will turn properly or at least have less turn authority the older Russian screw tank only has two screws and it seemed to have a few control quarks like turning required tuning the outside screw forward and leaving the inside stationary or the screws might start acting like wheels when you don't want them to. although i doubt Colin's will mind it being a little unruly to control so long as he can stay on and it makes a good video.

Tbh I think it should have place in today’s world but if you’re going to that I think the company should invest in cleaner ways to power it bc when we eventually run out of oil and gas how will it move? I’d need to be ran by eco friendly source so I think they should start digging into other ways he can be ran.

They were saying the earth was running out of oil in the 70s. Same scam now. Forcing the auto industry into battery powered vehicles to exploit resource development in China. Who burns through massive amounts of oil and coal to get to the rare earth needed to produce the batteries.
