    Great video as always Ciggy! I remember back when I worked at a deli there were always a few old guys who would buy a bunch of tickets, putting winnings into more tickets right away, and only stopping once they were out of cash, usually to the disdain of their families. Something definitely needs to be done

    I appreciate that you made a straightforward, informative and easy to understand video such as this. Regardless of what the actual subject or purpose is of endless possibilities for KZread videos that provide information or are educational, this the the type of content and content creator that I think is deserving of praise. We monetize kids opening toys or other people playing video games, ending with them having sponsors, free products and for some, alot of money. These types of roles should seriously be reversed and you/this type of content should be getting wheelbarrows of cash instead. i don't know if other people feel this way but the content is honest and has this aura of sincerity. But not only that, it does so while it provides useful information and helps people out. It does not go unnoticed that you go out of your way and take the time to make a video like this. I really wish there was more information about it and you know it really could somehow dive deeper into how intricate the system is and how unlikely the winnings actually are and really break it down deeply without getting too conspiracy theorists about it even though I do think it's a scam for the most part, but I'll admit I do buy scratchers but maybe $20 to $40 per month. I'm on a rant here but in summary I just wanted to say I appreciate you know you making videos like this and it was helpful and I can sense your genuine positive attitude and I think you did a great job.

    This whole message was very kind, and I appreciate it man. While there are many popular video essay and documentary channels out there, as you said they aren't as broadly popular as more general entertainment channels. It is what it is, and at this point I make vids because I enjoy the process and enjoy writing/talking about things that interest me.

    It's insane how these lotteries work, how little they actually fund public infrastructure, and how much of a negative impact they have on poor people/these dying communities.

    Social mobility is super low in the US - it's even lower than it is in the UK and they're one of the few lowest in the first world. Of course the US is only considered part of the first world because we have a big military and We Say So(tm).

    I feel you have first world and third world states/regions in this country. In terms of meaningful metrics and statistics this country is tremendously lacking compared to the rest of the world, all so we can have a big military and ensure gargantuan profits for Boeing or Purdue Pharma or whatever.

    Got recommended your channel by CaptainKRB and wanted to dig in a little deeper after watching the Steam video and wound up here. That was a very good decision because this video was excellent! Just wanted to commend you for managing to change my mind about scratch tickets. Before I was pretty easily put at ease by their education funding smokescreen and would have said that they were by and large harmless so long as you maintain a degree of moderation, but you brought up a lot of details about their operation and direct effects on their players that I had not considered prior to your video and I have to agree that something should be done to curtail their addictive feedback loop. Out of those you put forward my gut says the most effective would be the removal of the instant redemption option and a transition to some form of delayed redemption to at least slow down players ability to spiral off of any winnings into even more scratchies. Super glad I watched this and can't wait to see more from you because if the first vid wasn't enough for me to subscribe this one definitely was!

    How very kind of you to say, thank you. Yeah, scratch cards and the lottery business in general have done a good job of painting their industry as something benign, if not benevolent. Whatever positives they generate are vastly outweighed by their negatives however, and for a number of reasons as discussed in the video proper. Delayed redemption would largely kill the slot machine-esque aspects of scratchers and help prevent people from death spiraling on them, and it would be a relatively simple change to implement imo. Glad you enjoyed this video and my Steam one as well (would love to hear your thoughts on that vid too), and I hope you enjoy the rest of my catalogue, past, present, and future. Thanks again man.

  • @CiggySnake

    Well the issue there is that the funds from lottos come from what amounts to a voluntary tax. I do agree that a larger portion of money spent on lottos should go to public funds, rather than 25-30%. Also make it so they can't do tricks with the budget and take money out of a line item only to supplant it with lottery funds. Aside from being disgusting, it gives the public the wrong idea on the use of lottery funds in a broader context which entrenches these problems.

    I had no idea a lot of Americans didn’t know these were connected to The Lottery - here in the UK pretty much any scratch card is prominently branded with the National Lottery name, logo, colours, and many share their naming schemes with a televised lottery draw or are a spin on them.

    Thanks for the kind words man. I don't think there's anything inherently wrong with buying a scratcher or a lotto ticket every now and again, like you said it can be fun. The issue at hand is the broader system of lotteries/lottery operators and their direct targeting of the poor, and that is what we need to focus on.

    That was referenced in one of the articles I read, yeah. I don't necessarily agree with the framing, as scratchers and the lottery are more a poverty tax. Rather than being linked to intellect (or the lack thereof), lottery sales correlate with things like falling incomes, increased financial inequality, and rising poverty rates. I feel describing it as a tax on the stupid ignores a lot of the structural issues surrounding the lottery.

    @Ciggy Snake the first rule you need to know with all forms of gambling, is that there are always 3 people involved. The house (in this case the state/ national government.) The depositry (the exchange of chips at a casino or the person behind the counter where you buy the scratch ticket) and the gambler( the sucker) . Your odds are 3:1 [from the finances ALONE] before you multiply the odds of actually gambling, as a sucker.. If odds ever exceed the population of the world, i want to state this again: you have a lower probability of winning, than your self existing.... 8 billion to 1 divided by house odds is 2.3 billion to 1. There is no scratch card with odds lower than than that. Don't buy them.

  • @rat_king-

    @rat_king-

    Жыл бұрын

    If a ticket is a dollar. and max odds ensure 2.3 billion can come out. you then have the arduous and horrible task of separating off all the fractional wins. You know the 5 dollar returns etc. that you can "win" in the game. aka keep the sucker going. equally if you are operating by a country lottery, use the countries population. thus you find the total scale of the problem. again the prior example was global, and non specific to a country. which this now is..
