That Australian guy asking for a repeat of Thatcherite engineered-unemployment was a heck of a thing.

I almost have to thank Tim Gurner because he didn't just go mask off, he shouted from the roof tops exactly what he and his ilk want and think. Still an indescribably repugnant and unworthy human being though.
Having grown up in the 90s, it really is sad to see how much has fallen as you highlighted at the end of the video. It will get far worse before better.

You are unfortunately correct
That's a really insightful explanation of what's going on. Companies can only grow so much before they get desperate to raise the profit margin and turn to much more nefarious solutions to their "problem"..when a pandemic is great for business, tho shal it be.

Exactly. The pandemic/lockdown did cause legitimate and largely unavoidable supply chain shortages, so I understand price changes, reasonable hikes, and the like. However, the abject price gouging and profiteering is disgusting and unacceptable.
nice manifesto, ciggy
And that is why I think oligopolies are worse, mainly because it combines the worse aspect of both the saturation and quality issues that comes with a free open market with the "our way or the highway." mentality and the greedy practices typical of the oil and railroad barons of old with none of the positives.

Oligopolies often devolve into trusts, which are just monopolies in all but name.
Well-researched, thank you for articulating what we've all been thinking
Great video ciggy, very well edited and very well spoken !

2024, Netflix has now made it difficult to find content not yet viewed. Where ever I look, I see that they have removed from the main screen the information that I have seen the movie. Now, we must click on a movie to check if I have seen it. I'm looking for the 👍that indicates that I have seen it. But, once selected the movie begins to play ... But WAIT! I've seen this one. So I look back at the main screen, and see rows and rows of movies I have already seen, Where are the newer movies. I don't know. I don't want to click on a movie to see if I have seen it or not, at this point I want to watch a movie, not search around an app! Put back the 👍 on the main screen! 2024, the NetFlix main screen is defective, and I cannot find anything. Anyone else having this problem? I feel like not paying them any more MY GOOD MONEY.
Minor note around 2:56 - I don't think it's fair to lump Hulu into the same camp as Netflix internationally. Hulu's operations in Japan are almost completely distinct from their US counterpart at this point, being more in line with the service's original vision (a platform for distributing shows and movies by legacy TV broadcasters). Meanwhile, the rest of Hulu's stateside content is integrated into Disney+ in the rest of the world under the Star/Hotstar brand.

Fair. Hulu Japan is indeed a distinct entity at this point, they were sold off to a Japanese media conglomerate shortly after its founding iirc. I included it here just to demonstrate the spread and popularity of early streaming platforms.
great job with this one! i can really feel how passionate you are about this topic, keep it up!
When I bought my first DVD player, Netflix was offering like 2 free rentals as an inbox coupon ( and like 10 dvds with a mail in coupon from the DVD company, WHICH I NEVER GOT!!!!). Back then you could literally count every DVD that existed, so I soon cancelled the subscription. Like a year or two later I got it again and have had it ever since, for the most part.
Great video it reminded me of the Second Thought channel which I'm a huge fan of and share those same ideas. It's all about change and feeling there could be a better future.
This was a great video
My biggest complaint with streaming services is that they're desperately capitalizing off FOMO by luring you in with all these great movies and then taking them away thinking that some cheap movie they made is gonna make the user compelled to stay. It's definitely very shitty to think about, sure there are great movies by Netflix, but that's the exception, not the norm. I'll gladly stick with DVDs, which I can pick and choose what I want to watch at any time without worrying about it going away (unless it's through disc rot)

That, and the competition more concerned about using the same method is frustrating. How am I supposed to pay for multiple subscriptions when they all suck? I can't.

I didn't go into this but streamers can remove content from their catalogue just to chalk it up to a loss in order to avoid taxes. It makes sense from a business perspective, but is pretty depraved from an artistic/entertainment perspective, in that they're just erasing art to save money. Gross either way.
very impressive Essayist - keep fighting the good fight
Great content brother! Keep pushing the message
Solid coverage on an important, depressing topic. Also 10:05 "Epic Gaming: The Apex of Human Entertainment"
Are you familiar with the work of Cory Doctorow and his writing on "enshittification?" If growth and profit has to come no matter what, eventually it's going to come from you.

I've heard the term thrown around but am unfamiliar with this Cory Doctorow, I presume our theses are similar here.
Keep up the great work. This is pretty hard-hitting journalism.
Thank you for this thoughtful and evocative video.
Commenting for the algorithm. Nice video
This is why I bought a craigslist desktop for $100 bucks, a pci-e to SATA expansion card, got some drives, a VPN and now my personal streaming servihas over 6200 movies (twice that of netflix) lol fuck netflix.
great video as always, painfully true
My moms Netflix doesn't have Gone With The Wind, The Wizard Of Oz or any of the Chaplin classics. What's the purpose of the service ? The golden age movies are super cheap to include and provide endless joy and they don't have a single movie with Cary Grant and there's only Casablanca but that's probably gone now as they never keep the library intact. Kids today should be forced to watch Chaplin's The Great Dictator and yet I don't even know what streaming service that has this

Basically. Streaming services are just cable 2.0 at this point, but the distribution of films, series, and even seasons within certain series makes absolutely no sense.
I was shocked that the Netflix password sharing thing worked. BUT I wonder if those extra subscriptions were parents paying for their kids at college and the international market? Me and my other Jack Sparrows were sure it was going to drive more people to piracy.
@CiggySnake

I believe they polled who was sharing passwords with who and found it was mostly family members sharing it with each other, which shouldn't be an issue at all.
Glad I went to my subscriptions and saw this 😀

why did you put random scraping and dishwasher sounding noises in the background of your video? i've paused and replayed at least 3 segments to make sure there wasn't something wrong with my appliances lmfao

so, like. should we blame our chosen ideology, because socialism sounds sick on paper.

If by chosen ideology you mean capitalism, and more specifically the insufficiently regulated variant we see today, then yeah pretty much.
