Scrap Wood Gifts: Wooden Hair Clips
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
Hair Clips. I made this project back in 2013. That was my 10th upload to KZread and it had several "questionable" methods! I wanted to re-visit it and give folks a good scrap wood project in time for Christmas.

I do love the bits at the end when Mrs brown discusses the results with you. You should get her something nice to catch on fire for Christmas.
This is absolutely the kind of project where you can break out the micromesh with impunity. Everybody loves a glossy hair clip. Also, micarta hair clips. Or micarta hair stakes or hair combs. Or you could do the unenviable task of steaming some buffalo horn to unroll it and then make a hair comb out of that. Bonus points for being eccentric and hipster-chic by going back to one of the oldest materials for hair combs, since wood tends to be too fragile for them in the long-term.

For combs, depends a lot on wood species, grain orientation (and since modern glues were a thing, lamination if you use it), and thickness of the individual parts. Wood grain is the real problem here in the simpler methods (cut to shape, file, sand and finish) because you just can't get it right. Line grain with the teeth so they're strong and don't break easy, and it is easier to break along the length. Put the grain line with length, and the teeth are too weak and easy to break. Put it on an angle, and both are weak, just less weak individually than either previous option. Nowadays, if you laminate good hardwood veneer like a mono species plywood, that could fix the issue. Or you can do something more traditional like reinforcing, e.g. grain in line with teeth, and sneak a dowel/metal rod or two along the length to avoid splitting.

I'm only 70 and I call them "Barrettes" :( I did however learn the term from my father. LOL I've used those clips in the past to make hair bows. Some can have very sharp edges and destoy hair. Hope Peter didn't break off any of the hair he still has ;) I love wood because of the grains. These "Hair Clips" are beautiful. If I had all the tools you have I could make a bunch of sawdust; possibly accented with fingers I used to own. LOL You do great work. Happy Thanksgiving and thanks for sharing the beauty of your abilities and the insanity that lurks just under the surface of it all.

Don’t feel so blue! I’m 26 and (possibly learned from my great grandmother) that these are barrettes in my head. Hair clips in my head are the claw shaped ones!
@ashrowan2143

I'm 21 I switch between barrettes and hair clips but these I'd call barrettes I think it depends on how it is attached this kind of squish attachment is a barrette in my mind while the ones that entirely open and close like a little claw thing are clips.
@ItsAsparageese
2 жыл бұрын
@@ashrowan2143 This! I would use "clip" to refer to something with a bidirectional grab/claw/spring-based motion, like a butterfly clip. Same as a binder clip or paper clip, there's an "applying force equally on two opposing sides of something using the same mechanism on both sides" connotation for me. I've always called barettes barettes. The only way I could see myself referring to them as hair clips would be if I were talking about a group of multiple kinds of hair accessories that includes clips too. Then I can see "hair clip" being a sufficient umbrella term lol.

I’m 42 and those are ‘barrettes’. I have always called them that. A hair clip is something totally different. Love these!
It’s always such a joy to watch woodworking Peter craft a new project!
2:10 - Clearly you never learned my father. The real answer is, 'I'll use a 5/16 drill bit, drill the hole, then wiggle the drill around a bit so it has some room.' Yes, that is 100% my father's logic, and it does actually work fairly often.
Next episode: Taking scrap wood from scrap wood projects and putting them into resin. What happens next will shock you, well not really, but let's get turning.
What is this strange material you’re cutting on the bandsaw? It doesn’t appear to be resin so I don’t know what it is. Strange looking stuff. I look forward to seeing it used more in your shop.

Interesting as always ❤️ Some glittery dark blue resin on those walnut hair clips would make a beautiful galaxy pattern 🌌
I feel robbed that I didn`t get to see either of you wearing one. Neat starter project but I agree with Robert Coffey that a glossy look would look great. Maybe some more detail would kick these up a notch for the wow factor. Still though, great video as always, Peter!
I don't wanna be *that* guy BUT... fractional inch sizes is probably the strongest argument for switching to metric :)
I love Mrs. Brown's commentary. Please, keep using her in your videos.
mr brown: what do you call these? Barrettes? mrs brown: yeah, if you're 180... me: I guess I must be 180 then
I am glad to see that I am not the only one that uses those orbital sanding discs for hand sanding more than orbital sander sanding!

twentyone sixtyfourths of an inch is the most american thing ive ever heard, great one as always peter!
This would be neat with something suspended in resin just for the random cross sections.
Beautiful work but all I could think of was "wooden pringles" with the rounded pieces
I would like to see Peter Brown turn peanut shells into some sort of composite material.
6:32 I fully expected "fine! I'm micromeshing it"
I'm sorry Mr. Brown, but Mrs. Brown always makes your videos better than they started. It's not that I'm playing favorites, it's just that she's wonderful. I'm sure you agree. 😊
"yeah, if you're 180" I'm dying ! 🤣
Not quite 180 yet, but they have always been barrettes to me lol
I recently started making some of these myself. I have a tip for ya. Go to the hardware store and get some of those mini hinge packs that are used for small decorative boxes. The screws fit perfectly into the holes for the hair clip. Also, if you use a small, round needle file you can make the holes slightly bigger, and slip a leather rivet through it to attach leather pieces.
I honestly love the round walnut one. That is gorgeous!
You make a really solid argument for going metric.
Peter you could have your own Etsy shop with these lovely clips! 🙂
I love Mrs. Brown's commentary, it's the absolute best x)
Love the way they came out, and like the slicing technique too!
Love the googly eyes on your push stick! :D
Those are beautiful barrettes. I guess I’m old, because I think of hair clips of being the ones that pinch your hair and have a spring
Yay!!! I showed up on time! Loving those hair clips!!!
I'm surprised woodworking Peter allowed the resin at the end, he must've mellowed over the years.
Beautiful hair clips! I really like the rectangle walnut and the one multi grain rectangle! Well done! 👏
As someone who has bought hairclips like this for my mother at a vendor's in Pike's Place Market, it's pretty cool to see how similar hair clips were made! Personally, I take to the old "everyone's getting the same ugly crocheted caps and that's final!" approach to gift giving. I don't actually buy yarn often, but when people know you knit/crochet, you just sort of acquire yarn, in tangled webs in grocery bags from coworkers and aunties over time. Sort of how I imagine some woodworkers acquire firewood.
Gotta love Mrs. Brown’s quick wit.
Always excited to see a new Peter Brown video! only wish there were more, and more often!! 💜💜
An awesome blessing, more Peter Brown videos! You've been posting frequently :D

Very interesting! I'm glad you got some resin in the video to make sure you didn't lose your newer viewers :D I thought you were going to do the ones where you like drill a hole in each side and run a pin (like a chopstick) thru it. I didn't even consider you could put a barrette on the back!
This is one of the beautiful things about wood. Same material, so many ways to do the same thing! I myself, would likely laminate veneer/landplane shavings and use a form to glue them curved, or saw off a whole strip and use steam or soak bending and them cut off individual clips by hand.
Those barrettes are lovely!! 👏👏 The wood is so pretty! Now to find a mechanism that is a bit less flimsy!! 😂
That is a great project. I have tons of scrap, a circle cutting jig, glue and lots of time. Just need the hair clips. Thanks for the idea. OBTW - great video. Keep em coming.
Making holes either side & a wooden pin would be a great way to make more.
It is amazing how sometimes simple but clever methods can give such cool looking results :))))
Love the trial and error on the curves. Gives me hope on my projects when I'm just guessing.
Man these kinds of videos are wholesome.
“What do you even call ‘em? Are they barrettes?” “If you’re 180.” Ahh, that’s why people call me an ‘old soul.’ lol

I would love one of these! So beautiful!! Especially for some of my Renaissance garb. 😍 Nicely done!
..."It's before I show my face on camera" .... Nice simple project, Sir!
These are gorgeous but I can't imagine using a barrette that huge. Most I've ever seen aren't much larger than the metal part and are a lot thinner. These would probably feel like clipping a very pretty coaster to your hair.

My mom has really thick curly hair, so she has to use bigger barrettes like these ones. My hair is also very thick, but wavy, not curly, and when it was long large barrettes didn't work and I had to use smaller clips.

Sweet "Head Clips" bro!👍
21/64th! 🤣 oh dear! Use the metric system guys!! Very nice job and fun to watch! Thank you! Stay safe
the test pieces i think are my favorite followed by the straight walnut the mixed arent bad by any means but i love a solid wood piece
Expected to see them resin-ed together into a bowl or something. Pleasantly surprised at the end!
Love this. Thank you.
Excellent content, I love this idea and i feel inspired to make these for myself now!
I love your videos. They're so cool!
The extra piece on the clip creates tension so the clip actually grips and holds hair. It is absolutely necessary. Most likely they popped out because the wood piece is a little too curved for the clip itself. These are really gorgeous, though! The walnut is the prettiest, but the pattern the plywood makes is especially appealing.
I've certainly heard them called "barrettes". However, after hearing Peter, I'm convinced that the proper name is "head clips"! XD
I love the way you two talk to each other 😂
I am still convinced you are my history teacher
Now all you need to do is a resin video using hair. You may have to collect your hair clippings for over a year to have enough, unless you can convince Mrs Brown to shave her head. Lol
So pleased you grew in content style! No face or voice over, we’d being missing out on so much if you’d kept to that!

Those are so cute. 💕
I would call these barrettes, so I guess that makes me 180. Happy Thanksgiving!
Beautiful. But I have to mention that you do need the "bridgey things".
they look grand!
My grandma always wore clips like these she would've loved these great work
the curved piece that you lost is a spring to create tension to hold the barrette into your hair. iiiii tend to remove them though because i have really thick hair and almost no barrette can hold it. :P the layered look is really nice! :D
More content yay!!
The one with only 2 rounded corners is my favorite! I was hoping you were going to make the kind with holes and a "stick", but metal clips are fine too. lol
