Scrap or Save? What will happen to these abandoned trains?

For over 30 years a small collection of trains sat abandoned just south of Albany, New York. Their time in obscurity has some to an end. In this video I revisit the site, show recent developments and head back to the office to detail what we've seen, what we've lost, and what will hopefully happen next.
Some info from this video was sourced via these two articles:

I was the project manager for the rescue. The passenger cars were never owned by the Danbury Railway Museum but ownership did fall into the hands of the Port of Albany who was developing the site. Getting them out would have been a very expensive proposition and a logistical nightmare. Lots of issues that would have had to be dealt with while at the same time the developement project could not wait and there were no favors to be had.

Just wanted to update that as of 11/2/2023, the Class S-1 and Class T-3a locomotive are now on their way to the Danbury Railroad Museum: www.trains.com/trn/news-reviews/news-wire/news-photo-new-york-central-electric-locomotives-moved/ Amazing work by everyone involved to get these relics out of danger.

I still find it depressing these absolute icons of railroading are sitting forlorn. Almost for a whole generation these two locomotives, along with the just as iconic bipolar powered living room railroads across the US (and elsewhere) for 20 years, steamers barely getting a look in. They were the stars in their day, far more a demonstration of technological achievement of their time than a big boy. And they're sitting, rotting, but still look amazing. Stupidly I just held up my 100 year old Ives S motor in front of the screen; a magic moment 😊

Thanks for the tip - I was actually out there a few weeks ago and shot a ton of footage. Those cars seem to be a bit lesser known than some of the other ones out there. Was only a little bummed I didn't get to shoot the Jordan Spreader cab more-it was full of wasps!

Yeah unfortunately google earth is usually 1-3 years out of date, and street views in some lower population areas can be much worse (7-12 years out of date). If you compare the the 'before' photos late in the video to the 'current' (late Dec. 2022) view at the start of the video, you can see how the entire areas is different. It was once a forest, now it's just one massive construction site. DRM did a press release where they explained why they scrapped the rs3, u25b and-if I recall right- the passenger car.

??? I believe the Dining cars were slurped up by a Museum and another Preservation group is aiming to swipe up the two electrics last I heard. The dining cars were towed out cause the rails were still fit for use but the electrics are where they are cause the Rails were that far gone so the construction company was prepping things for their extraction. News on it went silent on them around March/April. Last I heard they were "Saved" waiting for extraction.

DRM, which came to own the car, u25b and rs3, said they had those scrapped. If the diner was somehow saved, I'm sure many would be curious where it went (or who funded pulling it out of there vs. the electrics)

New subscriber here- was there a power plant up near where this development is going in? I think I remember seeing one of there in a shed at least 30 years go- I remember thinking it looked like a GG 1 from a distance . Speaking of- you seem to have a good handle on what’s going on with abandoned RR equipment but would you have any info on the GG 1s stored out at C’Town Junction? I know they were moved and are now isolated from active track but I don’t understand why at least one has t been dragged up track to Milford and at least painted up for a static display.

Hey - thanks for subscribing, Yeah these trains are/were just north of an active power plant. The plant hasn't seen rail service in a long time. I went to C'town junction and Milford a day before shooting most of this video. I think it's a matter of time and cost and even ownership with those GG1s. A NRHS chapter owned them but I think that group imploded and just left everything there. Milford was quite packed when I went-they've got a lot of rail cars in a small space, and some of that equipment also needs attention (there's an FL9 there looking the same as it did when it left croton north twenty years ago, and a wood snowplow that seemed beyond saving. I'm sure someone at the tourist train operation up there has more in depth answers.

@@ltvsquadI think I remember seeing that F-9, was it in NH livery? Hope they figure a way to save those GG units/ they have made it so far to go to scrap. I remember seeing the old 0-6-0 thst buses to run to the track down to Milford back in the early 70s . I used to be up at C’Town station but was gone last time I was there... at least the rails are still there maybe they will reconnect those at the junction and restore full service sometime. I’m in NE and they are threatening to rip up the rails on the cape line for more bike trails - rather see the trains running . Hope they save/restore those Albany engines

@@oneparticularharbor144 The FL9 is in the old MNCR 'beachball' scheme (at least the one I'm thinking of - #2010). I never got to see the 0-6-0 and am not sure what happened to it. It looks like DO still has a few boxcars in Cooperstown for storage. The whole trail movement is insane. It makes me wonder what anti-rail billionaire is funding it all. In NYC there's a short abandoned LIRR line that they want to make into a park now. Nevermind the fact that it runs through a neighborhood that desperately needs the trains to run again, and could be connected to the airport for a twenty minute one seat ride to Manhattan. The trail people want their 'eco friendly' park, no matter how many millions of people taxi to the airport every year.

@@ltvsquad If I may chime in, just found this channel. First off, I'd like you to come back to Cooperstown and Charlotte Valley Railroad at Milford Station 🚉 and take a HARD LOOK at what's going on 👀 . 2 new switches are built and 500 feet of newly built track that's still growing to the south maybe for another 1,000 feet. The speeder shed was moved 400 feet and in 2 weeks will get a 1/4 turn to move to it's new spot and allow the new Siding track to pass by. The second track will get constructed after excavated dirt is removed and extended to the speeder shed. 1,000 feet of drainage pipe has been installed and the station area has been the driest in Years. Over 2,000 ties are on the property. 2 track crossings were just rebuilt in Cooperstown. As for the GG-1'S, The ties/timbers are at Cooperstown Junction and their display track will be done maybe in the spring but the main focus is to get Milford's tracks built. CAVC is connected to to the outside world at Cooperstown Junction and can receive cars if opportunities arrive. As for the NYC Electric's at the Glenmont Power Station, I got to go through them and all that equipment down there and when they were at the Colonie Shops when The Mohawk Hudson Chapter of the NRHS had them. So, come up to Milford, pick up a spike hammer, and spend some learning time Gandy Dancing on a growing tourist Railroad. Get the facts before hitting send. Yes! Things are really looking up now. From the Danbury RR Museum on August 2nd - if you scroll down their page you'll see photos: (facebook.com/DanburyRR/) "The site around the two historic New York Central electric locomotives has been prepared for their trip home to Danbury. A sea of compacted stone surrounds them, providing the perfect bedding for a crane and heavy haul trucks. Donated matting is on site for additional crane stability. The access road on which the locomotives will leave is complete, and contracts to move the locomotives are being finalized. " Accessing the site was the biggest problem with these locomotives. They were landlocked in a swampy area. Now that the property is being built up, they can actually get cranes & trucks in there to bring them to the museum in CT.
