This may have an obvious answer but I finally understand this game. I do have one question however. Say the active set is 1,2,3, will a 2,2 beat that set?? It is my understanding that a match will always beat a run regardless of how many cards are in a run? Thank you in advance.

Great question! In this case, the 1,2,3 is still stronger than the 2,2, because it has more cards. It's a little misleading when I say "A match always beats a run." To be more complete, I should have said "A match with an equal or greater number of cards will beat a run of any value" The order of importance when you're wondering, "Does my set beat the current active set?" is 1. Higher number of cards, 2. Matches beat Runs, 3. Value of the cards. As soon as one of these is true, you can stop looking at the other factors, so in your example, we check the first factor: Higher number of cards, and because the active set has a higher number of cards, we don't look at the other factors, and the 2,2 does not beat the 1,2,3. However, if the active set was a 7,8 and you had your 2,2, we would look at the first factor: 1. Neither has more cards than the other. So we look at the second factor, 2. One is a match and the other is a run, so the 2,2 beats the 7,8. And we don't go on to look at the third factor (card value). I hope this helps!

This is a very good tutorial. My FLGS says the game is currently out of print. Gonna have to wait a bit to get a copy.

Print runs definitely get sold out quickly. We've been fortunate to be able to stock pretty deeply when it is available. Looks like we still have a few copies left, though probably not enough to make it until the next shipment arrives in the States.

I was so lucky I found 1 stand in Spiel Essen to find it. A bit expensive for such a small box, but it was a no brainer after so many good reviews of it.

How does this compare to Cat In The Box? Which would you prefer to own if you only had one?

What a great question! I would definitely say the Scout is easier to teach and travel with, so it's become my go-to game-on-the-go. Once you've got the hang of it, it requires very little concentration to play, so you can be chatting with your fellow players at the same time. Cat in the Box is FANTASTIC for players who already love trick-taking games like Hearts, Spades, etc; it's a bit denser and more conceptually complex, and trick-taking fans will want to play it all night. Consensus? Scout is perfect as a quick filler or take-along game to cafes or bars. Cat in the Box is great for fans of the trick-taking genre.

If I have two copies... What cards should I take out so I can play with 6+ people? I know it's not meant for that but would really appreciate a recommendation

Neat question. Having not tried myself, here are my best guesses: 6: either both full decks (90 cards, 15 to each player) or remove the 10's from both decks (removing 9 cards each, leaving 72 cards - 12 to each player). 7: remove the 10/9, 10/8 and 10/7 cards (84 cards, 12 to each player) or remove all the 10's and the 2 9/8 cards (70 total, 10 to each player) 8: remove the the 10/9 cards (88, 11 to each player) 9: use both full decks (90 cards, 10 to each player) 10: use both full decks (90 cards, 9 to each player) I'm curious to know how this works for you. Thanks, -G

is it possible for a unbeatable show set where other 3 players scout the show until its only 1 card and then continue the game?

  • @BoardGameBarrister

An unbeatable show actually ends the round! If you Show, and then everyone else Scouts until the play comes back around to you, the round ends and you get to avoid the "lose points for cards left in your hand" penalty.

Does this play ok with just 2 players? Also is it strictly numbers or do the colours come into play? (My partner is red/green colour blind)

For 2 players, there is a rules change which switches up the round structure a lot (basic Scout and Show actions don't change.) Some people like it with 2, while others aren't so fond of it. I'd also suggest taking a look at Kiri-ai and Sea Salt & Paper for small card games with solid 2-player play. We have an entire store section of games that are great for two players here: store.boardgamebarrister.com/games/browse-by-number-of-players/great-for-two/ The numbers are all that matter in Scout, so no need to pay attention to the colors. Thanks for watching!
