I retired from a major international IT outfit whose standards of business practices were centered around avoiding the appearance of collusion and malfeasance. Every year all 300k employees from the executive to the line worker were required to cimplete, pass, and sign a Standards Business Practice program that was tailored to the business practice of the individual and/or team the individual was on. I can't understand how especially a Supreme Court Justice isn't required to adhear to such a basic practice.

I’m 60. Since I took Government in 12th grade, as Sandra Day O’Connor was sworn in as a SC justice, I have had the utmost respect for the SC of the U.S. Here we are, not-counting years later, and I have the distinct impression that at least half of the justices are extremely corrupt. We need authentic checks and balances, in all 3 branches. Because of the kind of country we are, Americans deserve to have the utmost confidence in our government officials. 🇺🇸💙

The supreme corrupt court is as bankrupt of any virtue as the party who schemed for that court to come into being. This pseudo-theocratic fascist autocratic apartheid move is to benefit one section of the country, the rich, so the others can become a cheaper source of labor and in endless debt to them, and the dupes can not see past their hate and fear to see that.

I took Civics in the 9th grade. I’ll be 51 in two weeks. I had the utmost respect for the Supreme Court until recently. I had the utmost respect for the Congress until recently. I even had respect for the Executive branch until recently. Vote them all out. Impeach the ones that don’t have to stand for re-election. Clear the slate. Outlaw political parties. Outlaw PACs. Outlaw lobbying. That’s the only way to restore both the faith and consent of the governed.

Allow them to wallow and allow yourself to be secure in the knowedge that regardless of what happens, you are on the side of truth and justice, both of which are modeling Jesus.

That admonition is even older than St. Paul, Ed. According to Suetonius, Julius Caesar's divorce from his wife Pompeia gave rise to the saying, "Caesar's wife must be above suspicion." It's as valid today as it was a couple of thousand years ago, as the mess surrounding our Supreme Court more than amply demonstrates. We need--everybody needs--rules and ethics. Without them, too often, self-interest wins out over honesty.

Clarence Thomas has always wanted to be rich. His salary is $300,000, but that doesn’t cover the lifestyle he desires. He wants more and more and has hidden his lifestyle until recently. Some people can rationalize or blame others for their wrong behavior. He knew it was wrong but choose it anyway. He is still excusing all the laws and rules he broke. We need people of moral character in our government.

oh, that case is a bit more than appearance but your point is exactly correct. sometimes when it quacks like a duck, we have to admit the possibility that we are dealing with a bird in the family of anatidae! but on your point, the problem with just not being evil is that only your familiars would know you are not evil. they would have to know you. by also not appearing of being evil, even those who do not know you see you as honest. then as you say, even those who do not know you well understand your integrity. more importantly as followers of God, our conduct will be a representative of our faith. hypocrisy is the worst enemy of sharing the teachings of God.

This is clearly a response to oath breaking becoming the norm in our politics, for example the last president swore oaths to the people and constitution, yet he lied to the people daily not to defend them or the constitution, but for himself and hubris, the 14th Amendment was supposed to protect us, as were Congress who swore similar oaths, but they let him see the next election because they found following their oaths to the letter too hard, the voters let him see it as acceptable by letting the next election remain within normal range of acceptance, the SC further ignored their oaths in the same way. Any time a politician is allowed to ignore their oaths by pretending the wording must be exact to matter, it causes great harm.

They can give benign reasons like "I'd like to drive my rv around the country while I'm still young enough to do it. But also, let's remember that our appearance is also controlled by the media and clearly that is a wild card. I'd say if he's really that honest he'll make his excuses and leave, to preserve whatever is left of their reputation. But if he stays in there for one last juicy vacation, may he reap his reward for greed.

I wish more people would do as Billy Graham did to protect his "image." I don't see how it's "distrust of women" since the same thing now would be done by using a man or a woman. It was avoiding a "set-up" (which is not a reflection of women so much as the people who might set it up.) It was recognizing that if one allows oneself to get into a compromising situation, one is complicit in it. (Rudy Giuliani and the Borat set-up comes to mind.)

I can't help but think there's a bit right before this where Paul says "I can't believe I have to tell you guys this but..." The reason we study Paul's letters is because the church was so new at the time it needed a lot of basic guidance. In this instance, it was a case of the Thessalonians needing to have the best possible appearance in thought, word and action in order to be taken seriously. To lead properly, you need to be above reproach. Yes, the current situation would tend to suggest otherwise, but that's a separate but related problem. I'm sure Paul also has something to say about not twisting yourself into a pretzel to follow someone who is clearly not a leader.

I'm wary about focusing on keeping up appearances since this is a norm within large institutions. Case in point the Roman Catholic Church, which sought to silence victims of child sexual abuse by its clergy. It turns out a lot of large ministries suffer from a youth pastor problem. I wonder if this extends to all large ministries, and I wonder if sexual predator issues which are then covered up by Human Resources, are consistent with all large corporations, just from sheer numbers. It does show the human animal struggles to preserve the integrity of large organizations, which figures largely in the collapse of empires. So I'd rather promote a culture of transparency _first,_ and then push for a policy of handling and learning from scandals and being able to point to a low (or at least dwindling) rate at which such issues emerge. But then even the Greeks knew we were prone to voting King Heron over King Log. I'm frustrated how simpleton and irrational human society can be (case in point, paparazzi with women and hotel rooms -- this shouldn't work on a rational, thinking readership). My greatest criticism of Alito is his failure to fairly adjudicate. The _Dobbs_ decision is notorious for its wrought, twisted logic that takes precedent from witchfinders and implies the incompetence of countless jurists who had affirmed _Roe_ across decades. When SCOTUS makes a ruling, I expect it to be logically ironclad, and when it churns out product like _Bush v. Gore_ or _Citizens United,_ what are obviously rulings based on partisan interest, _that_ is the first appearance of evil. The investigations that follow that show corruption (or what would be interpreted as corruption if it were done by any other office in the land) comes down to debugging, rooting the consequences back to potential causes. Alito was appointed in haste, after George W. Bush's unqualified friend was quietly rescinded and Roberts' selection was transferred to the Chief Justice bench. Similarly, Thomas was a known quantity even as he was sworn in, obsessed with porn, starved for more money and recognition. Thomas was always an easy mark for corrupting influences, rammed in for being a black conservative (a rare bird, the GOP favors to counter accusations of racist policy). So while the post-appointment befriending by Harlan Crow was shocking to witness, it was not a surprise to those who knew or ever worked with Thomas. His opinions are consistently unsympathetic, sometimes downright cruel, and like Scalia, the legal sector just learned to normalize his anti-public positions.

People often determine the appearance of evil based on affiliation and a particular belief. Religion is especially good at pointing out various groups' appearance of evil to create a sense of fear, and loathing as well as feelings of moral superiority and self-righteousness. Religion has always been about a struggle between good and evil centered around their particular beliefs. It would be impossible to persuade and recruit without the claims of holding the moral high ground. The concept of good and evil centered around the notion that a particular group is evil because of their beliefs is all too often used to disparage one group and elevate another. The act of proclaiming that one's beliefs are centered around good while others' beliefs are centered around evil could present the appearance of evil in those professing to be good. The appearance of good and evil is highly subjective and in the eyes of the beholder when it comes down to it!

Rev Ed. In the law, with regards to recusal, unlesdls I'm mistaken, American judges are supposed to self recuse from a case, if there is even an appearance of partiality or bias. Such as with the wrongly republican appointed Judge Eileen Cannon. With both Clarence Thomas and Alito, their words and actions speak to their blatent conflict of interest and loss of ethical morality.

Ah interesting, looks like there is some disagreement about "eidos" - "appearance" is the older and more basic meaning but "specific variety of something generic" was coming into use in the first century - influenced by Plato's morphe/eidos idea. Paul wasn't a Platonist ("redeemed Pharisee" is how I see him) but he should have been familiar with the popular understanding of Plato. So I wonder if both meanings were intended. People recognize the Form of evil by the shadows it casts, so, yeah. We witness better by not even appearing like that.

Ohhhhh.... Interesting. I'm going to give that some deep thought. Thank you. I had a prof who told us Paul would have been influenced by Plato even if he would not have been a follower.

If Billy Graham knew that people were setting him up with women made to make him look bad, then it made sense for him to have an escort of men. However, among most people, the idea of a man and a woman not being alone together has been taken to ridiculous extremes. This treats us women as if we are nothing but temptresses or occasions of sin. This denies our full humanity and our status as daughters of God and sisters of our brothers. The Bible says to treat younger women as sisters and older women as mothers. It does not tell us to avoid being alone with a woman. Jesus was alone with a woman at least twice in the bible, both times with women of ill repute, at a time when a rabbi or any man would never been seen in public with a woman, not even his own sister, for fear of scandal. Jesus even had women traveling with him and supporting him financially. Also, this verse "Avoid the very semblance of evil" (as I heard it said) was applied by a woman on the 700 Club decades ago to apply to some kind of behavior that the "uptight upright" thinks is born of Satan. I forget whether it was listening to rock and roll, dancing, drinking alcohol (at all!), watching R-rated movies, or something else. I like how you applied it, though--for a person in high position of government not to look like they are accepting bribes. On a lower, more down-to-earth example, it might be a teacher who refuses to accept expensive gifts from students or parents: no Rolex watches or cars or Schwinn bicycles, although Godiva chocolates might be okay.

Exactly. If I have an annual performance meeting with a male boss, for instance, I’m not going to ask him to meet in front of witnesses or have my husband be there. First because if my male colleagues are afforded confidentiality, I deserve that as well. Second, if a demand that witnesses be there when no one else does, I’ll make the boss look unnecessarily suspicious.

That’s why I much prefer the KJV. There is a difference between doing evil and having the appearance of evil. I find some other versions of the Bible leave out things.

Re SCOTUS, yeah, totally. But for people not in the spotlight, I'm not sure how to interpret this coherently. Given other things you have said on this channel, i guarantee that many "Christians" would say you support evil. (My parents probably would, for instance. ) I think there needs to be a "reasonable person" clause or something. 😂

Too much backstepping. ONE "I'm not saying there WAS evil..." covers the whole speech. The archetypal figure of this appeal is Caesar's wife, but there's an irony to that story. Caesar divorced Pompeia because she had a fling, but the flinger, one Clodius, was acquitted, so she was presumably innocent. BUT Caesar, a rising politician, was unwilling to be considered a cuckold but he wasn't about to keep an unfaithful wife around, either, so he invented, quite cleverly, IMO, that now famous, "Caesar's wife must be Above Suspicion" principle, now employed to mean appearance is more critical for the mighty that for regular folks.

Speaking of integrity, does it only matter when conservative politicians/judges take money or anyone on either side? Because Democratic Rep. Henry Cuellar and wife indicted on federal bribery charges just last month. But I don't see any video about that. So that means either, it only matters when it's conservatives and it's not the actual appearance of evil you care about or for some unknown reason, you didn't know about it. But now that you do know about it, will you now be making a video? Or again, it's only important enough to make a video when a conservative does it and it's truly not about the appearance of evil
