Scottish Independence: Last Week Tonight with John Oliver (HBO)

Фильм және анимация

Scotland is about to vote on whether to secede from the UK.
There are solid arguments on both sides.
But none of that makes bagpipes good to listen to…or does it?

    @Lm ao For what reason would Scotland not be accepted? We meet all the requirements, the only issue would be worries of other territories within the EU (Catalonia for example) getting the same idea. If the whole of the EU was to reject Scotland on the basis of some of their member states own internal affairs (hardly Scotlands fault) then they would show themselves to be incredibly undemocratic and unwelcoming, and would be shooting themselves in the foot for the world to see. That wouldn't happen, we would be welcomed, especially after Brexit.

    @@Shmingleshmangle The reason why the EU won't accept Scotland immediately is that it lacks several institutions and powers right now. Those need to be set up and develop a track record, as they will be the ones implementing both Scottish and EU policies. A far more logical progression would be for Scotland to join the EFTA, which it would be able to do almost immediately. The EEA accession would be the next step, and that too should not be too hard in principle (see below). After that, EU accession can be considered. However, a lot will be determined by the way the English border is resolved.

  • @Shmingleshmangle

    @Shmingleshmangle

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@lacdirk I don't disagree with any of that, I know it would take time but it's not impossible like many make it out to be. Also, the border is an issue created by English voters who want brexit, not Scottish voters who voted against it. If Brexit hadn't happened, and Scotland was independent and in the EU alongside England then we would have no issues. Sadly it's another classic example of us getting the opposite of what we vote for/English voters and Westminster dictating what happens to the lives of people here in Scotland.

  • @Galaxy-zb2ee

    @Galaxy-zb2ee

    @@baguettegott3409 By "some senator" I presume your referencing Senator James Lankford. Senator James Lankford is a right-wing, Baptist (i.e. a religious figure; protestant), republican who has held power since 2015. Given their religious beliefs, it can be assumed they held some discriminatory opinion on LGBT issues long before reading JK. Rowling's writings. Given his quotation of her, it can be agreed that Senator James Lankford seemingly admires, respects, or has given thought to JK. Rowling, but is this, factoring in Senator James Lankford's religious beliefs (which also include moral beliefs), equivalent to Senator James Lankford being influenced by JK. Rowling? Is influence the same as agreement? In my own opinion, I think the answer is both yes and no. It depends on the time scale. For example, I would be much quicker to blame the Church and the Bible itself on Senator James Lankford's beliefs than the views than JK. Rowlings. Senator James Lankford agrees with the Bible, yes, - but presumably only agrees with such a book due to its influence as, being in a religious family, it was probably his only vessel for learning about issues - it played a governing role. If JK. Rowling has played a parental or governing figure, such as the Church, I'd be much more inclined to say they had influence, but they did not (one may be tempted to reference JK. Rowling also wrote successful books, but I've yet to see any transphobia in them, just bad writing and a severe lack of snakes for a book with a snake talker). You may be correct on the media argument, or you may not - I don't know since I don't pay attention to media, and if everyone stopped paying attention to the media, the media wouldn't have any influence in the first place. *We can all do our bit by ignoring people in the media.*

You can just say that the euros more stable than the dollar and pound, but it's actually just untrue. Hindsight is a wonderful thing. If the scots knew then what they know now, I have no doubt they would have voted for independence when they had the chance. The U.K Government aren’t stupid. They can see this, which is why they presently won’t grant them another referendum. But it’s a dangerous game they’re playing, because they must know that calls for another referendum will only grow stronger the longer it continues to be refused, with hostilities and resentment growing alongside it.

    They don't need the UK to grant them another referendum. They don't even need to go to war. They have the UK's nukes-all of them. "We're leaving and we want you to come get these horse shit nuclear weapons that shouldn't even exist" is an enormously, enormously powerful statement, because nobody wants to tell you you can keep the nukes but they're not letting you leave. If you let them leave and then invade, it's a war of aggression, they have their own army, NATO shows up, the UN throws sanctions at them, the EU starts causing economic damage, the WTO starts causing economic damage, and everything gets very bad.

Are necessary imports getting pricier due to a weakened currency? Etc. Etc. Etc. And in case you’ve forgotten, the pound has lost 10%-20% of it value against the Euro since the Brexit process began and though it has rallied against the dollar after losing around 17%, it is still about 6% under the pre-Brexit exchange rate. As a mainland European who briefly lived in the UK prior to Brexit and used to buy stuff online from there, the low value of the pound is obvious, since I continuously have to remind myself to recalculate at a significantly lower rate than I reflexively do. Of course, this issue also comes up far less frequently, since it rarely makes sense (due to added duties) to purchase stuff from the UK after it left the common market.

You can raise the nominal value of the currency as well as increase all the prices by the same percentage, and the actual value would remain unchanged, but the price as expressed in other currency (and vice versa) would change. What you want is a currency that's relatively stable so people's savings and investments aren't suddenly worth a lot less, and which allows foreign investors to invest in your country with relatively little risk (at least, as long as we have a global capitalist system, that's the reality we need to deal with). Fun fact: one of the popular legends around the thistle becoming the national flower of Scotland is that the English were tying to scale the walls of Edinburgh at night in order to invade, yet one of the English soldiers accidentally grasped a thistle while climbing, letting out a piercing cry that woke up the guards, who then successfully repelled them. Granted there’s no evidence behind this story, yet it’s still a pretty fun tale...

    Well, as the saying goes: "It may not be true, but it does make a good story". ;-) And about the thistle: I think a country which chooses a flower as its national symbol which is at the same time beautiful and to be handled with care to not hurt yourself is a force to be reckoned with, because that's a country with an attitude, as the motto "Nemo me impune lacessit" ("No one provokes me with impunity", or in Scots "Wha daur meddle wi' me?") on the Scottish coat of arms already strongly suggests in the first place. :-)

I remember debating with a friend of mine on why the US territories and D.C. should become legitimate states and his only offense to the idea of adding 6 states was that the US flag would need more stars. I mean there are legitimate arguments as to the pros and cons of statehood for each and you literally base your decision on a flag?

    I've seen a lot of this dudes videos, and I've never laughed as hard as I just did 😂 The fact that he's British gave him vested interest in the topic and he KILLED the accents and facial expressions!

    When John started talking about David Cameron at Oxford, my video started glitching, and while the audio kept going, the video restarted, so as John said: "Here's a picture of him at Oxford," I was staring at a picture of Shrek

    My step-dad is pure Scot. Never lost his accent after 40+ years in Canada. I always wondered how my mom could understand him. My husband has trouble. Never start him on any history of Scotland because it never ends with him. Great pride. "The Stone of Destiny" 2008 is a good movie to watch about Scotland and England to explain some things about how/why England added Scotland to Great Britain. Approved by my Step-dad that only likes factual movies if they're in colour (fiction for old b&w).

    England, especially London, was dead lucky that Mary, Queen of Scots, lost her French first husband before they provided France and Paris with an heir to the thrones of France, Scotland, and England.

    @@jacksimpson-rogers1069 It's likely that if such an heir had existed, England simply would have found someone else to become King. Likely by passing a law disinheriting that branch of the family. It would hardly be the first time such laws had been passed.

    Here I am watching this 9 years after the vote. I'm stunned after the history of Scotland that they didn't vote yes. My guess is they were most fearful of the economic repercussions. There's really no other reasons to stay. It should be voted on again.

    no, it's all based on sectarian issues with glasgow rangers fans all voting no because they are ignorant cunts who hate catholics, the rest of the no votes came from pensioners like my mother & aunt who were told their pensions would stop the very next day if they voted yes. that's the facts, the tories & labour lied to pensioners with the help of the BBC & print media, everyone i know voted yes apart from the old folks & arseholes like one of my brothers who claims he's singlehandedly paying for our free prescriptions & free further education course fees, you even get studyiing on the OPEN UNIVERSITY free in Scotland as well as university & college courses while the english pay £9,000 a year. my kids were in their teens & voted YES, they still would nearly a decade later & hopefully most of those pensioners have died, like five of my older relatives since the vote. any of my nephews & nieces would vote yes too, now they are all in their twenties, especially after the way the SNP dealt with covid rather than following that moron boris & his schemes. we don't need the english, we are better educated, more informed & better people, to us the english are like trump supporters, racist, homophobic misogynists, the kind of people we want nothing to do with.

    Some Scotch does intentionally taste like smoke. Some tastes “peaty” (I think that stuff tastes like gasoline). In my opinion the best is smooth (Glennlivet is probably one of the better common brands for that). But if you’re just trying to have a good time blended scotch is fine (but Johnny Walker is overrated and overpriced).
