Scott Tannenbaum(BJJ Blue Belt) vs Tae Kwon Do Instructor (Black belt) - Part 1 (1994)

Спорт

This old school BJJ vs Tae Kwon Do challenge match took place in 1994 between Scott "TNT" Tannenbaum and a Tae Kwon Do Black belt instructor. Scott (Gi) was a Blue belt at the time but wore his Aikido Black belt. The Tae Kwon Do instructor wanted to demonstrate how much more effective he would be in a real fight. After negotiating Scott was able to get the TKD instructor to bet on his skills with a lopsided rule set putting Scott at a huge disadvantage. The rules for the TKD instructor were "No biting or eye-gouging". For Scott "No biting, eye-gouging, punching, elbows, knees, headbutts, hair pulling or grabbing fingers. Also Scott had to win by submission". The TKD instructor was so sure he would win that he put up $1500 which was a lot of money in 1994. As you can see from the video Scott easily dominated even with the implemented rules. After the win the TK instructor immediately jumped up and said he wasn't ready and demanded a rematch. Scott obliged under the condition that once again the winner would receive another $1500 for winning. This second match is post as "Part 2".
Today Scott is a 5th Degree Black belt under the legendary Rigan Machado,

I'm a bjj guy myself but also did TKD & TSD for many years. If that guy's a black belt throwing a spinning kick like that then I'm a pro body builder. Never lifted weights in my life. Very funny.

Agreed, just watched a vid of one of the old Gravie challenge matches that was titled something like Russian 8th dan in Judo, Vs Gracie when there isn't even a 8th dan Judo in Russia and they never mention his name. That was it for me I mean perhaps it's my excuse and I do think BJJ, is very effective but it was enough for me to reinforce that there whole label has just been a scam from day one. I mean how hard is it to roll with someone, video tape it then promote it is a complete system? A lot easier than selling chessy Karate tapes that teach no touch KO's but it's more about the label and using it for a really smart business plan. I didn't see one kick with any real power so wouldn't care If he is a BB, he's technique is pretty flawed, If he hasn't gone past the stage of tag your hit. No real challange here O, and move the camera, get over here LOL.

@@kissofthecobra3761 But you are creating propaganda yourself for making a false claim. The fight with the Russian Judo guy made no claim on rank, what was said was that he was a 6 time Russian Judo champ, unless there is another challenge I don't know about. Of course there was hype and propaganda to promote it here but most of these were people from other styles coming to fight them in challenges. Almost all of the challenges on their tapes are black belts in their styles. In fact one of the fighters a legit black belt in Kung Fu, who they fought in 2 challenge matches also entered the UFC where Royce beat him again. I trained Karate, Judo in the 1980s and BJJ changed martial arts overnight. I was training BJJ in 1993-ish and it was a game-changer. I even began submitting competitive Judo black belts as a BJJ white belt. Rorion systematized it and you are ignoring decades of refinement in prize fighting from the turn of the century. Now, the style, in retrospect, had a limited strategy, which everone has caught up to, but most martial arts back then, were making false claims about effectiveness, etc.

@@turntablesrockmyworld9315 I don't buy it. No one is running around challenging everyone else in dojos, the Idea of a dojo storm is defunct at best. There are many martial artistist who make false claims but I don't think that's the fault of martial arts as martial arts are just that a art form. Take wing chun as a prime example wing chun is piss poor when up against a seasoned boxer are any contact sport athlete. However, Wing Chun also deals with concepts found in western boxing, and with the right focus and intent it has some value even If it isn't an all-around system. The same can be said about arnis but the thing with arnis is it doesn't always translate over to empty-hand combat it's a stick fighting art. However, training in some styles in the 80's was probably a lot more brutal than how people train today. I used to train a style called Kajukenbo that has a motto that is your not done tell blood is on the floor. There are plenty of claims of old-school Kajukenbo fights that lead to broken bones and students leaving due to the intensity of training. Honestly, how much of it is true I don't care. I don't walk with a badge testing things I've trained in because I know they work. I know boxing can be lethal and I know Judo can also be very dangerous. In fact, there was a video here on youtube that it appears to have been removed and showed a throw that could have easily killed the guy being thrown. Where the Gracies tuff? Yes, do they know how to grapple? Yes but it doesn't deviate from the fact that Gracie Jujitsu is a brand and a brand has a purpose to sell a name and this case an art that was refined for competitive fighting. Are you now going to come back and tell me Gracie Jujitsu is something new and magical? Are you going to try the typical it's art A Vs B bullshit? It's an art, a valuable art created for completion but it wasn't the Gravies who were the first to do all-out fights. It was Mitsuyo Maeda, who actually taught the Gravies how to win over others with Jujitsu so If anything all the respect goes to Mitsuyo Maeda.

@Random Name Yes, all of which is so much easier to do in a fake fight scenario where you don't have to worry about your opponent biting a chunk out of your forearm while you are fishing around for the choke. Every legitimate martial artist should have some grappling in his toolbag. And every legitimate black belt will attempt to bite a chunk out of your flesh anytime you're trying to sink in that rear naked choke or arm bar. If there's one overarching hangup with martial arts these days it is the people who cannot separate the controlled environment of a match in an octagon, with what a real fight is like where gouging eyeballs, and fishhooks, and biting are fair game.

@@redbaroncarwash You say that as if the BJJ practitioner is not able to perform any of those "real fight" maneuvers. Let a BJJ blue belt get on your back and then ask them to try to get to your eyes before you get to theirs. Try to get your teeth on their arm as they go for a choke. People bring these sorts of criticisms up all the time, but they don't test their hypotheses. Yet, many of the early BJJ academies in the 70s/80s/90s had open-door policies for anyone who wanted to come challenge the instructor in an anything-goes match. One must be in a proper position to execute *any* technique. What BJJ practitioners gain is the ability to control *position* in a fight situation. Talking about rear naked chokes and armbars is missing 90% of what BJJ is.

*MMA fighter vs Tae Kwon Do challenge match* See I just fixed your title. There is no such thing as a BJJ fighter in an actual fight. You will use a striking martial art and then judo or wrestling to close the distance. In fact there is no such thing as BJJ in itself. The actual term should be mixed grappling as the "art" has no foundation on its own. It is a mixture of different grappling arts that were appropriated and the names of the moves changed.

Even in TKD vs TKD fight, only a fighter with no tournament or little sparring experience makes a tuit chagi (the spinkick in reverse he does before he’s taken down) as an offensive move. A tuit chagi is a good response to an attack. I’m practicing TKD for many years and I think TKD stands no chance against a skilled JJ fighter. All TKD black belts including a former national champion who was our trainer agree, and train JJ themselves to compensate. The TKD fighter’s only chance and objective would be to keep distance. All spin kicks open for being grabbed. The only tools remaining (with high risk still of being grabbed) are yop chagi (side kick), bandal (roundhouse), push kick and knee kick. Naeryo (frontal high kick) or a tuit chagi maybe if an opportunity arises as a counter. All only front foot, since rear opens the body and takes longer. Low kicks are not allowed in TKD. All medium and high kicks are dangerous since the JJ fighter could grab the leg.
