Bryan Lee O’Malley’s Scott Pilgrim series follows 20-something slacker Scott Pilgrim as he navigates is way through life and tries to find love with delivery girl Ramona Flowers. Both the comics and film see Scott facing off against Ramona’s Evil Exes using video game motifs throughout. While many of the main plot points are similar certain ideas, like interdimentional travel, were left out of the film. At that, it’s time pull back the proverbial shower curtain on all the differences between the book and the film.
Have you read the Scott Pilgrim series? Are you a fan of the film Scott Pilgrim vs the World? Were you upset by any of the changes they made from the book to the movie? Do you like comic book movies? What’s your favorite non-superhero comic book movie?

The glow seems to be an allegory for guilt. +Two Coins Entertainment I think that for what it is (how cheap it was to make, how unknown the source material was at the time, the fact that is directed by someone like Wright -who, sure, nerds know who he is, but he's no Nolan, Spielberg or something like that) is the best it could be, but I kind of only enjoy the first half of the movie. Once Scott beats the three first exes the movie starts going way too fast, going from one fight to the next with nearly no context or development. I think the movie would have been awesome if it was two instead of just one. But, again, for what it is, and what could be made out of it, it's awesome.

I think the biggest difference you left out is how much the comics expand on Envy's backstory, including Scott's years in college, the band they had back there, and Envy's turn from geek to cool kid. Also, her character is given WAY more depth concerning her relationship with Todd, as well as how she perceives Scott. She's also a key character in understanding how Scott is an unreliable narrator, since his recollection from their break-up seems far different from hers. While in the movie, she disappears after Todd's death, she sticks around in the comics right until the end, getting more and more developed every time. Seriously, apart from Scott and Ramona, she's the most developed character of the series.

+Shatzy Shell Loved that stuff - Scott as an unreliable narrator, realizing he's an asshole too and possibly becoming an evil ex himself. The time passing, highschool flashbacks and growing up gives the comics a good bit of poignancy. The movie is fun but light as a feather in comparison.

Another addition: in the comics, Todd was cheating on Envy with the robot arm girl, which ultimately turns Envy against him, as she even tries to fight and help Scott. Todd and Envy were actually childhood sweethearts, and Todd punched a hole in the moon for her (which he also did for Ramona, a point that plays a role in Envy's realization).

It was a visual powerhouse but lacked real sense of plot but I get the theme it was trying to go for but honestly needs more believability with how the characters act when certain scenarios happen like "You have to defeat my exs to date me" it would be more believable to have Scott go "Hell no you're crazy" but have Ramome go "Not like you would care" or something along those lines. It was all about dealing with the past and handling the future but more actiony video game style which just made the plot begin to be shaky. We all had to deal with some girlfriends exs before but more in the sense of talking it out with you're girlfriend which can be like a battle, rather than literally punching a lot of dudes in the face for something they did when they were 14. Its very funny, actiony and thats kind of it, not really the best relationship advice or even advice at all just Scott and Ramones struggle of their ackward and shaky relationship and how to keep going despite both being sort of assholes :I

I was happy for "The power of self-respect" to be more powerful than "The power of love". Often times in media love is misused or even glorified as an unlimited power weather literal or figurative. I was impressed with the storytelling using something else, something I even agree with to be more powerful than love. Without self-respect love is pointless for both parties involved.

It was obvious the Edgar Wright was a big Knives fan becuase he give her a much bigger role in the movie than she had in the comics. This has always annoyed me because Knives got screentime that should have been used to develop Ramonas character more. So it really makes sense that in the orginal ending Scott was supposed to end up with Knives not Ramona. Atleast I am glad that he decided to change it after some test screenings.

@@quinnmarchese6313 She is important but ultimately she represents everything he is not. She's a good kid with a bright future who is innocent and still wants to believe in Scott. Meanwhile Scott, the shitty adult, toys with her feelings, leeches off his family and best friend, nearly cheats on Ramona with Lisa, and also broke Kim and Envy's hearts without giving them any sort of proper closure. They say "Knives deserves better" jokingly in the video but I'm pretty sure that's actually a point in the story. She turns 18 and is headed to college away from that town. She's growing up and moving on. It's Scott and Ramona who are the characters that are just unable to move on properly and never end things on the right terms. It's why they're so good for each other, because they both reflect each others negative aspects and bring them to light. Note how in the last book of the series, Scott is finally able to come to terms with the three girls whose hearts he broke: Kim, Envy and Knives. And for the first time in her life, Ramona finally comes back to apologize to Scott and work things out instead of abandoning the relationship when things got challenging.

The thing is that Ramona is a way more expressive and interesting character in the books. She's constantly changing her appearance because her personality is super colorful. We don't get to see that in the movie. That actually ends up being a huge plot point because the reason why Ramona is able to overpower Gideon has to do with the fact that he only likes his one idealized aspect of Ramona. That part of Ramona will never be able to let him go. However, all of the parts of Ramona that Scott took in stride during their relationship are all able to show up and overpower him with ease. Because she found someone who was willing to accept all of her instead of just part of her

Scott Pilgrim is EASILY one of my top five movies of all time! The writing is witty and constantly drives the story forward. The characters are unique and quirky. The visuals are stunning and beautifully woven into the fabric of the story. The dramatic lighting and the editing techniques keep the movie dynamic and subconsciously appealing. Lastly, it's got video game themes such as epic boss battles, coins as loot, power-ups, 1-ups, and a myriad of weapons. The very beginning of the movie begins with a Zelda reference! The moment I heard the Zelda jingle is when I knew this movie was going to blow me away.

+Techaxe The books are almost always better than the film adaptation, the writer has practically unlimited space to tell a story while a film has on average an hour and a half (unless Peter Jackson is directing it, geez). That being said, there is a guy in the film (When Scott enters Gideon's club) that said "But the comic book is better than the movie" in a little bit of self referential humor there.

Both are great for their own reasons, I consider each an alternate universe of the same story, the movie has action, music, and a concise story that keeps close enough to the source to be a classic. The comic is deep, imaginative, more fleshed out, and adult, a comedy, action, slice of life, with a unique art style that will create a semi genre.

It would be great for sure, but even if we go further than the comics... What's left to fell? Watching Scott as a fully grown-up adult, getting married and stuff? That wouldn't be very funny, nor very "Scott Pilgrim-like" . Maybe something happening in the same universe, with some cameos from liked characters? That would be cool! Or maybe having Scott becoming an evil ex-boyfriend as well (maybe for a story centered around Knives!)

There's at least 2 weekends in the movie, arguably more. Along with Ramona changing her hair every week and a half, and having 3 hair colors, it's safe to assume the movie is more like a month rather than a week, particularly the month of April, which is mentioned, and spring finally arrives as the end credits are about to roll. I see a lot of people say it takes place over a week but that just isn't the case.

Scott had barely any character development in the movie. In the books Scott actually learned to be a better person through multiple social interactions who showed him WHY he was an asshole, instead of the quick pep talk he had with Wallace in the movie. Knives was also a lot whinier/annoying in the books, but ALSO had more development and she actually matured up and lost interest in Scott before the final showdown.

One difference I always found odd is in the fight with Patel how when Scott in the movie says "That doesn't even rhyme!" it's about a line that definitely does rhyme. Whereas in the comic, it's Scott's terrible attempt at an improvised verse that prompts Patel to tell him it doesn't rhyme, earning a "Shut up!" from Scott

I will definitely rewatch this later whenever I forget things, and share this to who ever I know who also likes Scott Pilgrim.

You could have added to the memories bit that when Scott beat up Simon, he wasn't a super evil psychic dude, but just a small asian kid. Also how he didn't tell Kim, but Lisa that he was leaving his hometown. Which IMO even if it's altered memories, brings more depth to Scott's character.

It also makes even the lesser actions of characters feel a bit more understandable and makes them painted as less irredeemable. Dickish perhaps, lots of faults, but I feel the fact that everyone in the story had a lot of issues was a big part of the dynamic's charm.

Probably this was mentioned in a comment but in the comic, Todd orders Gelato wich envy has no idea has milk and eggs in it. This causes the vegan police to show up later on and take away todd's powers.

The game is amazing! Best beat em' up since Streets of Rage or Final Fight imo. The character progression is great, the items, the characters, everything is top notch! Well except the ending that makes you wait for the credits to roll all the way through that takes about 20 minutes. Grab another Mountain Dew or Monster, and take a smoke break, you'll be fine. Worth every penny. Wish there was a re-release for PS4/XB1/PC port and 4 player online campaign.

The game got a 4 player online campaign, but it was through paid DLC and it was YEARS after release. I get the feeling that no one even bought it. You also got to play as Wallace, but he was just a copy of Stills much like Knives is a copy of Kim.

I didn't like how the movie changed Wallace even though the actor was amazing. Because of the time compression he's banging a new dude every other night whereas in the books he was in one relationship and started seeing someone else over the course of a year. And it's fine for someone to have casual sex but it does kind of feed into a bad stereotype of gay men. Plus Wallace was even more of a mentor to Scott in the books, even with his fighting. Also I didn't like that they switched the ending of the Envy fight to Roxy. In the books Envy gets defeated by the knee orgasm, but it doesn't KILL her. Having a sexual act be fatal kind of makes it creepy even if it is in a cartoony, video gamey way. Also having a lesbian be killed by an orgasm from a man is really weird and gross. Other than those I loved the film and thought the changes were OK.

Scott pilgrim is one big metaphore. The main idea is about over coming the past to keep the present. Each fight is a battle with the past the main ideas being romana has her own past and each ex represents a phase in Romans life notice how romana dates completely different people this shows her devolving her life. The ending represents the continue into the future since the past has been faced.

I think the most profound difference between the movie and comics is that Scott is a bit more of an asshole in the movie. In the comics finally volume he finally acknowledges and accepts the mistakes he has made in his past relationships and decides to become better because of it, which never happened in the movie.

I thought it would have been amazing... 1. If they would have waited until the books were complete, prompting 2 movies, a part one and two, so they could add in some more details and subplots that helped tell the story. 2. Would start a long running animated series that was highly accurate to the art style, frames, and story from the comic, maybe even adding in new scenes under Brian O'Malley's guidance. (Scott Pilgrim vs. the animation really showed us how possible this could be if you ask me.) Oh, and a little side note I think is funny is how coined in and popular the phrase "Kick her in the balls!" said by Wallace Wells in the movie is, even though it isn't even present in the books, it's a shame, but oh well. :P

  • @AFTimeLord

They could recreate this as an animated show. I'd say that Adult Swim could do it best, or Netflix could commission people to make it and release it episode by episode online. But this film doesn't cut it, so much of the finer plot details are just gone, and in comparison to the book, it kind of speeds past a lot of the bigger elements.

A tiny difference that you won't have noticed if you read the black and white comics first like I did, but I noticed that Knives dyes her hair red in the color comics, instead of blue like in the movie. I'll be honest, Red is such a better colour for her. DAMN YOU LYNETTE.
