In this final video of the teardown series, we start with sandblasting and stripping the existing paintwork (00:00:23). Sandblasting is a nice option if you prefer to avoid a chemical stripper but some factory finishes (e.g. powder coat) may prove stubborn.
Chemical strippers are nasty to use but can be effective. If nothing else, make sure you protect your eyes and your skin… the stripper used in this video burns if it contacts skin!
Clean up the stripper residue or sandblasting dust using a degreaser.
Rust can be removed using any number of different techniques including sandblasting, hand sanding (by hand or using wire wheel), conversion, and hydrolysis. An effective yet simple, low-cost/low-toxicity approach involves soaking overnight in a vinegar bath (00:08:25). Use 18 grams of table salt dissolved in 1 litre household vinegar (or 1 cup salt to 4 litres/1 gallon of vinegar).
Scrape off any loose rust beforehand and again when the item comes out of the bath. Immediately neutralise with bicarbonate of soda and rinse in water before drying. Do not soak alloys using this technique or they'll disappear into the soaking bath never to be seen again.
I find it best to treat any new flash rust with a rust converter like Ranex. I rag on the Ranex and let it soak in (00:12:56).
Finish up with a final degrease and don't forget to get a primer of some sort on your clean metal work as soon as possible before it starts to corrode again.
If you're planning to have your metalwork professionally repainted (powder coated or sprayed), enquire about sandblasting as an option. Sandblasting yourself, unless you're equipped for it, still costs money to hire the booth and consumes your time; it can also be a messy job. Stripper costs a few bucks too. You may find the cost to have your mower sandblasted to be about the same as other options and it's certainly easier to have someone do the job for you.
☠️ Some of the chemical products used in this video
● Paint Stripper: Poly Polystrippa
● Rust Converter: Bondall Ranex Rustbuster
● Degreaser: Diggers Wax & Grease Remover

About me and this channel: I'm Michael, a homeowner and aspiring lawn addict. I make these videos to share as much as I can, as best I can, from my recent experience rebuilding two Scott Bonnar 45 mowers. Although I'm a passionate wood worker and ex-IT guy, I have zero mechanical experience. I'm no expert on these subjects but I learn by sharing and it encourages me to grow a better lawn and build a better mower if I know you're watching!

I have just sat through and watched all your Scott Bonnar 45 teardown videos. They are inspirational. I am going to have crack at fixing up an old SB Model 45 14" that has been sitting in the shed for years. Thanks.

Thanks for vids mate. Started my first Resto and stuck at the bed knife removal atm 🤦🏻. Just wondering though, what's the best (most environmentally friendly) way to dispose of the vinegar solution once you've finished with it? Is it OK to tip it down the sink?

Hey Glen, thanks for watching. I've got a bedknife vid about to drop--I'll try and get it published for you this weekend, subject to mothers day! A bit of bicarb should neutralise the acid in the vinegar and turn it into water (from my basic understanding of the chemistry!) so down the sink it goes

If I was to soak the reel, would that remove any backlapping that had been done?

It's a chemical reaction so I would think not (same if you're using a paint stripper). Sandblasting would potentially interfere with a sharp edge. Personally, if there's enough meat left on the blades, I'd take it for a professional grind while it's out of the machine (and after it's been stripped and rust treated) 👍
