Foreign players bringing diving into the game is a myth - there was plenty of diving and play acting back then. Stan Bowles admitted to diving in his autobiography, but the master was Francis Lee!

Not sure if proper is the word I would use, the standard of all football in general at this time was so much worse compared to how it is now, its like watching the womens game compared to men's. In my opinion a lot of these players wouldn't stand a chance in today's game (although they were all better than I will ever be at football) but still very interesting to watch and to be able to see how the game has dramatically improved over time.

Was at this game as a ten year old. Just to clarify one thing about this game. The actual attendance was 119,00. That was always etched in my memory because it was the biggest crowd at a game I’ve ever been at. Standing on two tins of McKewans export supported by my old man in the North enclosure. Was also at Hampden the very same year to see Celtic thrash Hibs 6-1 in the Scottish Cup final. Just the 106,000 at that game!

I enjoyed Norman getting Billy early in the 1st half and the little smile and moment between them as Hunter gets a talking to from the Ref as a Leeds fan loved it, also how good was Paul Madeley lol MOT.

The first thing I notice is that nobody if faking an injury after a hard tackle. I wish they still played that way today instead of all the showmanship.

A cracking game & that's just the bones! I think the ref had a good game despite the full blooded play up & get 'em. I missed this game (Army abroad) so it's half time now & I don't know the result. Shots of the crowd & it could be 1920s 1930s with lots of old guys flat caps & shipyard workers. 134,000 amazing & no trouble, can't see any England fans yet!

@@seltaeb9691 If it was 134,000 Jocks then that was 2.5% of the population at the time which is absolutely insane. 1 in 40 were there. For comparison that's like America today sending 8.25 million fans to a match. Roughly the entire population of London! 😯

Thanks again, duckjive1, for a wonderful piece of nostalgia! Unfortunately, for a Scot, entertaining though it is, it just shows how tactically naive Scotland were in the 70s - punting hopeful long balls into the England box more often than not instead of keeping possession in the way England do. And we didn't have a tall target man here!

A 'relatively' small crowd of 119,000 by the standards of the past there that day. My God, Scotland v England crowds at Hampden Park, Glasgow were amongst the biggest in the world at that time. Golden days, indeed...

124, 000.I was there. No such thing as health and safety back in the day. Absolutely terrifying being carried by the Crowd, on the other side , you couldn't fall . The strong gust s of wind made it lm possible to play decent fitba.

I was at this game, still got the programme. I remember there being a great crowd but didn't realise it was 134,000. Remember the good times!

Many thanks. Missed this in 1972 as I was in The Army - Now, stationed in... 😎Nassau, Bahamas. Really tough out there, we lived in flats with our own swimming pool. Tough indeed. Cheers DuckJive 🦶⚽🦵.

This fixture is so intense for the fans on both sides but nearly all those player on the field we're mates. That was good to see.

Denis Law talking about Bremners level of commitment. They’re on international duty and on a day off, they would visit the local primary schools and do a bit of coaching, sign autographs etc and play a fifteen minute each way game. So Bremner is on one side and Law on the other and they always made sure it was a draw, so none of the kids would be disappointed. Near the end, somebody punted the ball upfield and this little boy about eight years old runs after it and is heading for goal, Bremner runs after him and chops the legs from under him. The little kid does two somersaults, lands on his back and is winded. While the teachers are trying to revive him, Law grabs Bremner and asks him why the hell he done that. Bremner, completely serious said ‘He was right through on the keeper.’

When you consider the nature of the game today, with no tackles from behind, the plastic balls today, the lightweight clothing and boots, the 20% synthetic pitches, etc. And look at the crowd, no seats. @@James-hh1lq not sure I entirely agree, they had more individual skill. Today players are taught to pass the ball rather than dribble, the triangle passing. Boring to high heaven in fact sometimes I can’t even watch today it’s so mind numbingly boring. When I moved to the States I got into basketball and changed my choice of sport.

What a game! Absolutely loved watching this game.Watched it back then as a 11 year old.

I shall never forget the joy of the magnificence of football during this era in time. I remember being on the edge of my seat and my mum and dad urging England to smash that ball right into the back of the old net.

Indeed; imagine a wnaker like Beckham in this game ? He wouldn't have made it as five minute substitute. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 Premiership is a disgrace, reflecting the sad decay in Britain. The hint of a dive and turds like Beckham et al, should have been sacked, let alone sent off. This Scots team would trounce the ' English' ( and I use the moniker very loosely) team of 2022. Imagine the broken legs ? Like trees and plants, stunted due to shelter from the wind, the game would come like a tempest agin those soft, slight and weakened limbs.

Real football is about skill, anticipation and intelligence not 'getting stuck in' which is a euphemism for kicking people. Football should never be a battle, only a battle of wits.

This is the real football we all loved, played by real men !! This was the best era of football!! Just hearing names like, Banks, Moore, Ball, Chivers, Hughes, Meadley, Brenner, Lorimer, Gemmell, Law, McCarry, Hartford gave me goose bumps back then as a 12 year old!!

@johnferguson40 Thanks .. just a typing error in my excitement !! Billy Bremner was my favorite player those days, but the Scottish FA shot themselves in the foot by banning him in 1975 for some bar fight !! It's just an excuse to end his international career. It's just insane!!

Great to see Colin Bell in his rightful 8 shirt. He was my first football hero. A great talent cut short.

Great days loved it when i was a kid the crowds all standing packed to the rafters you could hardly breathe let alone see 134000 unreal.

What an amazing match! I watched it as though it was live. Phenomenal players, especially the defenders ... Moncur - both goal keepers, and perhaps the greatest footballer England had ever produced .. the England Captain, Bobby Moore ( sadly taken from us so soon). Excellent full match upload - but we'd be happy to watch it in the original 4:3 - please don't stretch it. As others have said - 'proper football' - not the overpaid, egotistical, vainglorious, tattooed, wankers we have 'today'.

Alan Ball never gets the credit he deserves …..a true great and a player that Grahame Souness admitted he never got anywhere near when he played against him and make no mistake Souness was a great player too ….

As you say, so many great players on that pitch, on both sides. Bobby Moore's reading of the game shone throughout. Roy Mcfarland was outstanding alongside him too. Asa Hartford showed great technique as well. Had to laugh at Alan Ball and Denis Law walking off like best pals at the end. Warriors throughout the match !!

Saw this match as a 12-year old kid in 1972. Malaya then did not have coloured TV and we watched the International Weekend on Sundays.

Hampden looks a bit different these days! Another brilliant post-love it!

Scotland had some good teams in the 70s and 80s. You do have to wonder whether the founding of the Premier League harmed the Scottish national team? Scots were preeminent in big English clubs back then.

Of course, in the 70s the fans who remembered the 40s and 50s were saying exactly the same thing and thought the likes of Moore and Bell were just effeminate fanny merchants with their long hair and "male jewellery". Plus, remember that it was these same players who then failed to get England to two successive World Cups in the 70s.

This is the football I fell in love with, sadly long gone and what we have now pales in comparison.

This was England on the verge of being pretty lousy for almost ten years, during which they failed to qualify for two consecutive World Cups ('74 and '78). The Scotland team are full of big, very famous names but I don't remember the no. 2 , John Brownlie, at all. Had to look him up. Played for Hibs and then Newcastle apparently, and only made 7 international appearances.

Brilliant right back. Broke his leg in a league match against East Fife in 73 I think. That hampered his career.. An attacking full back. Powerful and quick. A great player in a great Hibernian side.

England may of been lousy for ten years and failed to qualify for 74 and 78 world cups but still had big names in their team with some very good if not great players throughout 70s.

For those of you watching on black-and-white sets, England are in the light shirts and Scotland are wearing the dark shirts.

His nickname was 'Crazy horse', such a great player... just a pity he played for Liverpool when he could have been down the road at Old Trafford if he'd played his cards right. 😁

Sad to think how many of these terrific footballers have left us now.

One National Anthem played.......THE National Anthem of both England and Scotland. No "Flower of Scotland", no whistles or boos or disrespect, just men playing proper football simply for the pride of representing their country.The Home Internationals and the FA Cup Final were the only games shown live on TV, so you made certain to watch them every season.

I was at the match in the Rangers end. Those fans were just back from the battle in Barcelona. As England fans we cheered the goal and it was like shouting in church.

A great match, real venom! 130,000 Scots screaming for English blood. Donachie and Gemmill were superb and Hunter too although his tackles were absolutely brutal.

Was born that August, but most of these were still playing or managing when I became aware, and then mad about football - only ones missing seem to be Roy Race and Blackie Gray

This game is the greatest example of how football should be played. After 2000, the game got very crappy (mostly because of player’s managers, bosman case, and the lots of money that were involved).

How brilliant was Norman Hunter in this match ? I was only aware of his reputation as a 'clogging' centre half till I saw this. Yet here he displayed huge talent. Excellent passing, great anticipation and awareness off the ball, unbelievable work rate, good technique. What an eye-opener. Glad I saw this. Excellent example of how football was played 'when I was a lad'....lol

Note Alan Ball & Denis Law went off the field after the game after a hug and arm around each others shoulders. Best of pals really, as many of them of course were playing in the same league and often teams the rest of the year.

Interesting to hear Jimmy Hill adding commentary with Brian Moore. Hill was with the BBC (Match of the Day) Moore was with ITV (The Big Match & On the Ball)

Tackling was brutal, almost GBH. No wounder once you got the ball you got rid of it to avoid a broken limb. And once the players career was over, for most, no money and lucky to be a pub landlord. All so different now.

These guys were not constantly diving, complaining or needing a rest after running for 20 seconds, used a much heavier ball and they earned £70/week. What a bunch of dopes! :)
