This video is split into two parts, first our trip to Barra, Vatersay and Mingulay (with no dialogue), followed by a chat about our trip and tips for visiting the islands yourself.
➤ JUMP AHEAD TO OUR BARRA TRAVEL INFO 18:07
Barra and Vatersay lie at the bottom of the chain of islands that make up the Outer Hebrides (also known as the Western Isles), in the far west of Scotland. They are small, but perfectly formed, with a little bit of everything that there is to love about the Outer Hebrides; beautiful white sand beaches, rugged hills, fresh seafood, colourful fishing boats, turquoise water, relaxed island vibes, and even a beach that doubles up as an airport!
The uninhabited island of Mingulay lies 12 miles south of Barra, a haven for wildlife including a large puffin colony between late April and early August. A day trip to Mingulay by boat from Castlebay is an incredible experience, with a few hours to explore the island on foot, followed by a boat trip around the enormous sea cliffs. Here you’ll find guillemots, shags, seals, and more wildlife, and you might even spot a climber or two on the cliffs! There is a chance to sail through a dramatic sea arch too, given the right conditions and size of your boat.
We travelled to Barra by CalMac ferry from Oban at the start of June and spent 5 nights camping on the island before continuing our road trip north to Uist, Harris, and Lewis (more Outer Hebrides films coming soon!).

    Really beautiful shots. I had the pleasure of walking the Outer Hebrides for seven months back in 2019, the highlight of which was spending four nights alone on Mingulay. Just got back from a week in Mangersta, Lewis, and my heart is very much alive and crying out for more, more, more, of these wonderful islands. Your films capture the essence of the Western Isles wonderfully.

    Oh wow, 7 months walking there! Sounds fantastic. I'm not surprised camping on Mingulay was a highlight, when we got to the island we too thought how amazing it would be to spend a few days there. In the future sometime, hopefully! We also really enjoyed the Mangersta area. Amazing cliffs, stacks, and beaches, and it feels very different to other parts of Lewis. Glad you enjoyed the film and thanks for your kind words! Kim

    These Hebridean islands hold a special place in our hearts and we're happy to finally share this film with you! Camping on Vatersay Beach was every bit as glorious as I'd imagined, and our last minute decision to take a trip to the uninhabited island of Mingulay turned out to be a huge highlight of our Western Isles trip, with puffins galore! Now, two questions for you... Did you see the puffin poop? And have you noticed Del playing the bagpipes 😆? Full guide here - www.goingthewholehogg.com/best-things-to-do-on-barra-and-vatersay/

    I was so looking forward to this video and it did not disappoint!! Vatersay and Barra are two of my favourite islands. I highly recommend Barra Bike Hire, they offer a great service -- and as the wind cancelled our kayak and boat trip to Mingulay, it's the only booked activity that we actually managed to do... ^^ The walk up Heaval, Barra's summit, is also really worth it, with great views all around (when the weather cooperates ^^). Didn't notice Del playing the bagpipes until you mentioned it, but I'm now tempted to go rewatch your videos to look for it!

    That’s wonderful to hear Julie, thank you! Barra and Vatersay are also favourites of ours. Great to hear your recommendation for Barra Bike Hire, but a shame you never made it to Mingulay… next time, eh!? Would love to get that view from Heaval but unfortunately it was something we missed on this trip… yet another reason for us to go back too! Haha, the bagpipes! Think they’ve been too well edited out in previous videos but you never know 🤣

    One of the things I really like about your videos is that afterwards I feel like I've actually been there. I wonder if I'd have even more sense of that if there was footage not only of the scenery, but also of local people and the usual 'day-to-day' stuff... eating a meal, visiting the shop, the two of you together, etc. I guess that would mean losing the sense of calm and serenity, which you capture very well... and I know you've done this more on other videos. Maybe I'm saying that I miss this breadth on these Hebridean trips, which are more wilderness-orientated. But of course they're still very lovely and blissful, and your follow-up in the second half is always excellent... and uplifting too. Oh, by the way, did you pick up ticks with all of that camping and wondering about? I need the gory stuff! 😀

  • @GoingTheWholeHogg

    @GoingTheWholeHogg

    Жыл бұрын

    Interesting to hear, thanks for sharing your thoughts on that. We decided from the start of the trip that these videos would be more of the scenic variety, in large part I think because we were unsure about our plans and so weren’t sure about putting a sequential ‘story’ together. Also we decided to only include Kim in the footage, as it’s hard to film generally scenic shots with both of us all the time. Our thought was it feels weird if there are only a few shots with the two of us so better to focus on just one exclusively. Our previous Wild Scotland and Orkney videos were in that style so that motivated us to take that approach. Still, appreciate that people like to see those daily details. Something to ponder for the future. Nonetheless, appreciate the feedback, and always glad to know the follow-up went well… as said before, it’s not always easy 😅 As for ticks, no issues on this trip. They weren’t a problem here and we do try and to be careful after having a couple of scares in the past. Pulled a few off our legs on the Moray Coast Trail a couple of weeks ago before they got their hooks in us 😳

    @@GoingTheWholeHogg Oh yes, the interaction of the two of you counts for a lot, Del. Movie stars maybe without knowing it! 😀 But I can see that it might add complication. Good to know there's no tick problem there. It can be pretty bad on the Inner Hebrides I've found... well, they seem to be very partial to me!

    A lovely and very evocative video which brought back many happy memories of our two stays on Barra. Thanks. We had a brilliant day walking around Vatersay too along with walks on Barra’s west beaches about five years ago. Pre Covid the airport cafe used to sell great fish and chips on a Friday night. It was interesting to see see Mingulay which sadly, we had two trips cancelled due to bad weather.

    Thanks Michael, really glad you enjoyed this and that it brought back good memories. So many great beaches on both Barra and Vatersay. We had food in the airport cafe back in 2017 (bacon rolls I think 🤔), but there was only stuff available from the vending machine this time. That’s a shame about Mingulay… what a highlight it was. We will always be appreciative of how lucky we got with the weather that day. Thanks again

Only a few midges at that time and there were tourists but it wasn’t overrun. Best time to avoid the crowds is probably just outside of school holidays. And for midges, the summer is the worst, but we’ve previously camped on Barra in mid July and don’t remember it being too bad… there is usually a good breeze on the island 😃
