➤ JUMP AHEAD TO OUR UIST TRAVEL INFO 21:12
A long string of islands, Uist (pronounced yoo-ist) lies at the centre of the group that makes up the Outer Hebrides, Scotland’s Western Isles. Linked by causeways, this island chain stretches from Eriskay in the south to Berneray in the north, via South Uist, Benbecula, Grimsay, and North Uist, with Uist being the collective name for the entire chain.
We visited Uist as part of a longer wild camping road trip through the Outer Hebrides in June. We took the ferry from Barra to Eriskay and travelled up through South Uist, Benbecula, Grimsay, and North Uist to Berneray, where the ferry departs for Harris.
In this film we visit the rugged east coast of South Uist, heading off on short walks around Loch Eynort and Loch Skipport, in the shadow of impressive mountains like Hecla and Beinn Mhor. We wander around traditional thatched roofed houses at Howmore, indulge in fresh seafood at Namara and craft gin from North Uist Distillery, and brace ourselves for some cold water dips with friends at Baleshare Beach. We go cockling for the first time, and explore the beautiful beaches of Vallay tidal island, Hosta, and Balranald. Oh, and don't forget Murdo the Shetland pony and his pals!
To plan your own trip to Uist, check out our accompanying travel guide over on our blog - www.goingthewholehogg.com/bes... and be sure to stick around for the second half of our film where we share lots of Uist travel tips and talk more about the places featured in the film.
Happy Travels!

Our few days on Uist were such a highlight of our Outer Hebrides trip, exploring places we hadn't made it to on our previous visits to the island and catching up with friends to swim, drink gin, and try out cockling for the first time! This latest film is probably our favourite in the series so far and we hope you enjoy it too : ) Kim & Del

My brother and I saw the short ear owls on South Uist in September. Amazing to see so close. We did a tour of Outer Hebrides from Barra to Stornoway in Land rover defender and two dogs. Brilliant.

Beautiful as always. It makes me want to pack my bags this second and come back to Scotland! The drone shots are absolutely mesmerising -- and it suits Uist so well, with its incredible mosaic of land and sea. I was coming to the same conclusion that the armchair was preventing Dev from playing the bagpipes... And maybe a beer in hand also helps! 😅 Looking forward to the next film!

Hi Andrew, we are coming up to Harris and Lewis next month on a photo workshop, we are really looking forward to visiting the islands again. Andrew can I ask you do you regular move away from your desk when working as I have been told you must refocus your eyes regularly away from the screen. I had a window to gaze out of to help with this though it looks as though you don’t. This coukd be something else to help with migraines.
