Looking at the steam languorously rising between the coaches, the sumptuous seats with a lovely pattern, and a steam locomotive proud at the front, something inside me wonders where the romance in modern trains is going

It's since Privatisation that things have changed for the worse, Great Western Railway's "high-density" HST's being a particularly flagrant example, with 88 seats crammed into a carriage intended for just sicty-four!

A pity about the weather…A lot of the passengers appeared to be bored or slumbering to falling asleep like one big bloke there in second class. Every comment is full of praise for the scenery…but frankly it’s all the same and looks like November! And those plastic cups of coffee or tea and shortbread biscuits oh the eternal shortbread one can almost taste it to see it … have to be starving to enjoy it! If only they were human with a decent glass of beer and a roast beef sandwich for « a snack » and some cheerful staff around…with some knowledge of the world around in their heads…and candid frankness to say the truth about the weather…Reckon if the truth were known, Bonnie Prince Charlie was glad he didn’t make it, as long as he had his Drambui anywhere elsewhere was a better bet as Henry IX was heard to mutter in Rome, upon receipt of his stipend pension from George in London!

You could always travel up from London Euston on the overnight "Caledonian Sleeper" train to Fort William (or, if you prefer the Scottish version, An Gearasdan) and, if the weather is kind, climb Ben Nevis. Or visit the Aluminium Smelter and see how clay is turned into metal. Or visit the Distillery and see how water is turned into whisky! I don't know if McTavish's Kitchen in Fort William still does Haggis, Neeps and Tatties with an evening of Scottish Country Dancing but it's worth checking out ...

Definitely on my bucket list! But you know what would be even more amazing? Caledonian sleeper from London to Fort William, then on to Mallaig (ideally on the Jacobite, but hey, even a Sprinter would do), then ferry to Skye. I think there's a bus to Kyle of Lochalsh, from where you could catch a train back to Inverness (I think they even do some steam-hauled excursions along that line) and then the Caledonian Sleeper back to London. Would have to be between May and July to take advantage of the long daylight hours!

That was a fantastic classic train ride! I could hardly believe my eyes when I saw the steam locomotive. And then when you went inside, the patterned seats, woodwork and the old lamps were perfect. Then to top it all off, the clickety-clack rails and the sound of the locomotive. That was the whole thing, the classic train experience. And it looked like you went at a great time of the year with all the color of the scenery. Mallaig was windy and damp, what they probably call a fair day in West Scotland. This was one of your best.

A while back I suggested steam trains. I don't know how I missed this, but it surely did not disappoint me. As a 73 year old guy, I played with and still collect toy trains. There is a brand here in the USA called American Flyer. They developed in the mid 40s a mechanical choo choo sound system, and this engine sounds very similar. I have to say, I love all of your videos, but this is the BEST. Thank you, Dylan.

Thanks, Dylan, for this brilliant coverage of the Jacobite Steam Train. It brought back fond memories of my visit in September 2018. I had two bites at riding the Mallaig line; the first was on those Class 156 units on a round day trip from Crianlarich. I travelled forward via rail to Oban, then took the West Coast Coach to Fort William, then rail to Mallaig and all the way back to Crianlarich, crossing the Jacobite with 45212 at Mallaig and later at Glenfinnan on its afternoon outward trip. The second day trip was from Inverness to Kyle of Lochalsh, by coach from Kyle across to the Isle of Skye over the Kyle bridge, then down to Armadale and across to Mallaig on the ferry. Travelled on the Jacobite back to Fort William behind 62005 and had an early dinner at the Morrisons store before catching the Intercity Coach back to Inverness. I must tell my Aussie friends about this video.Oh! I almost forgot. Our Canadian friend Michael Downie (of DownieLive fame) would be interested in your coverage as he had a brief visit to Fort William back in March which was out of season for the Jacobite. I'm sure he'll give you a hearted comment for this video. Thanks again for the memories of this wonderful part of Scotland. Stay safe and I look forward to next week's travel report. Cheers from Michael downunder in Melbourne where Covid restrictions have mostly been removed.

Hello Dylan. That was a fine video. i had the pleasure of doing that line on my visit to the area in February 2020 prior to the current unpleasantness. The Jacobite steam train wasn't operating at that time, so I did it via the regular Scotrail service. The £15 or so return fare from Fort William to Mallaig is probably the best £15 I've spent this year. The scenery is great and ample time to have a few beers and a bit of lunch in Mallaig. Fort William is a good place to stay and hope you got the opportunity to hang around.

Hi! I am Shiva Prasad from Bengaluru, India. It's an amazing video❤️ I have never seen such a wonderful train❤️ I may never get to visit England/Scotland but through your video I had a most memorable journey!! What a wonderful scenery❤️ hats off to the authorities who have strived hard to maintain such a beautiful steam locomotive and those gorgeous coaches.👍🏻👍🏻🙏🏾

Thank-you for this reminder of the trip taken by a friend and I in the summer of 2014 - when we were both celebrating out 50th birthdays. I think we had the same seats as you. On our trip the outward stop at Glenfinnan was around 40 minutes allowing everyone to detrain, have a stretch, visit the museum, have tea in the restaurant coach at the other side of the station, etc., but presumably that would have been out of bounds due to the pandemic... We also dropped a few passengers at Arisaig; and as well as the lunch stop in a much busier Mallaig; had another 25 minute stop at Glenfinnan on the way back - which was crossing the afternoon Jacobite steam train that runs in summer. This was quite a performance actually as our train had seven coaches and straddled the points - hence a great deal of shunting was needed... Lovely to view the scenery in autumn, though. I trust you enjoyed it as much as we did.

Thanks, Dylan! So here I am blown away !!! This is one of my favorite videos from your channel. A steam locomotive !!! You imagine !!! It's awesome. Everything is magnificent: the locomotive, the train, the atmosphere, the landscapes, the departure station, the arrival station, the villages that you showed us. Oh dear !!! I love. Thanks to you. A real treat to see your videos, it's delicious !!! You give your all for us and in addition you enjoy the best trains. What memories in your head !!! Thanks again to you.

Loved this review. The overcast weather, in a sense, made the scenery even better. Clouds rolling across hilltops is majestic in my opinion. This also reminded me of the Verde Canyon Railroad near Sedona, Arizona, US. I highly recommend it if you ever get the chance!

You were on the correct side of the train for that viaduct. It seems that one should keep that in mind when choosing a seat for this trip

Dylan, my husband and I enjoy watching all of your videos (especially since we haven’t been able to travel during the pandemic), and we like your videos the best over other travel vlogs, but this is one of my very favorites. Scotland is on our list, and I hope someday (hopefully soon) we can experience this rail journey ourselves. In the meantime, keep up the great work and thank you for the videos you provide!

I imagine the high ticket prices are a result of people's desire to ride on a steam train, the efforts of the crew that make these things happen and keep them in working order, and that whole vintage before I die I want to do this thing. I love the wood in those old coaches. I've always wanted to take the North Yorkshire one to Whitby when I was there, but somehow never managed to do it. A friend took me to the Ribblehead Viaduct, but not by train. That was impressive!

Amazing scenery, hope to go there one day as that is where my grandfather is from (Scotland). Enjoyed the video a lot Dylan and enjoy how you present the content. No music, we get to hear everything and like that you're using subtitles to provide information. Subscribed! Keep up the great work and stay safe!

This is for me ! What an amazing trip on a fantastic steam powered train. The train was as you mention impeccably clean and the scenery was some of the best you have shown us. This is definitely something to experience for everyone travelling to Scotland. In terms of pricing I had estimated based on tourist trains in North America the cost of your trip at about 150 euros and I was spot on but you got 2 seats for that- not bad. Great shot of the loco, a 4-6-0 and a beauty at that. This is now my new favourite train trip, Isle of Wight falls to number 2 !!
