Sciutto: 'Closer to the first use of nuclear weapons since Hiroshima and Nagasaki than we realized'

CNN's Jim Sciutto explains how in the process of researching his new book, senior officials revealed to him that the US was 'preparing rigorously' for the possibility that Russia would use battlefield nuclear weapons in Ukraine. #CNN #News

On December 5, 1994, the United States, Russia, and the United Kingdom signed the Budapest Memorandum on Security Assurances to reinforce their commitment towards Ukraine's security. It was a political agreement based on the principles of the Helsinki Accords. The memorandum included security assurances to protect Ukraine's political independence and territory against any threat or use of force. Additionally, the countries pledged to respect Ukraine's sovereignty and existing borders.

WITH PROVISION that NATO would not expand toward the East. You left that out. This is another GWoT oil/gas cartel war, now with GMO grains enhancements. Within only weeks of the 2014 US-UK-I overthrow of Ukraine, Monsanto (Bayer) had scooped up huge GMO agricultural leases, _that were already covertly in place!_ Now Ukraine is dumping GMO grains on Europe, and driving EU farmers off their family farmlands. Meanwhile Biden's LNG war makes our US-EU energy costs soar. Google 'bustout' then follow down the rabbit hole toward Argentina.

@@michelemarr76 Nope, the US government has officially said many times, the Budapest Memorandum was not a Security guarantee and they've said the Ukrainians were aware of it in 1994. I can't speak for the Brits or Russians in terms of what they guaranteed Ukrainians. Think about it. We had just won the Cold War. As such, Ukraine was a loser as much as Russia as they were both Soviet states. We wanted nukes in one place so we wouldn't have a bunch of smaller Soviet Unions to fight. Ukraine was way more corrupt that it is now, there was no Zelensky, and Ukraine was buddies with Russia back then. It would absolutely be insane to risk American security to guarantee security to a former soviet state in 1994. It's all propaganda. If people don't believe the US government though, there's a simple fix. Send a military to enforce what people believe the US's obligation under the Budapest memorandum is. Until that day, I'm going to trust my government over propaganda.

They took it away from Ukraine, not Putin and, the guys who started the "game" from Kyiv in 2014 gave them a chance to go with their lands where ever they wanted. Of course, it could have been new republics, but..... But, relax. This is a nuclear media propaganda, not an actual threat as there is no danger for anybody, except what was and may still be for the population in the secessionist territories of a country that ripped other countries territories with the help of Russia and now plays the card of "chewing gum democracy". Now, good old Roosevelt, Groves and Oppenheimer gave the whole World a new reason to live, no? And all those who came after them hunting "the ghosts" of imaginary threats just to put a country in a permanent war military-industrial state since then made the things even better, no?

Yes like really. The use of nukes in WWII was followed 4 years of the most devastating conflict the world had known, in which more than 60 million died. Europe was devastated and starving, rationing would not end for years. The US and USSR were responsible to rebuild. More damage had been done to Japan and Germany through firebombing than with the first nuclear weapons, and far less was known about potential long term effects. The Japanese doctrine of bushido had been proven on Iwo Jima and Okinawa, so the US knew the Japanese would fight to the last man. The civilians were advised by the emperor to commit suicide rather than surrender.

He's also directly stating that Putin's reference to nuclear war is inaccurate, and thus constitutes Putin being a bully. That what Putin is saying is empty talk. He also seems to feel that US policy makers have a monopoly on the rational intellect and therefore ordained for exclusive possession of thermonuclear weapons. This guy is one of thousands in the New Establishment raised and educated by people who have no memory of WWII, the Cold War, the Cuban Missile Crisis and the Vietnam War. He's ready to rock, and has neither the respect nor understanding of nuclear fusion as did Oppenheimer.

What wasnt mentioned in this clip, was the very public threat by the US that any use of nuclear weapons in Ukraine would have severe consequences for the units that deploy these weapons. And in contrast to putin's constant saber rattling in 2022, this was only said once by President Biden. I'm pretty sure that also helped not only to make it clear to putin what the endgame would be but also convey the urgency to China and India who would in turn dial up their pressure on putin to not make any such mistake. Subsequently, putin's constant threatening of nuclear escalation pretty stopped in 2023. He's been at it again this year, but that is mostly a sign of weakness and insecurity.

There has ever since then been speculation about the possibility that conventional weapons could have killed people en masse in Japan and done the same types of damage. But if the US hadn't used or developed the weapons, the Nazis probably would have. And probably against Allied Forces. Yeah. Pretty much. Talking about the people rising up and taking power is great and all but it will never happen. You would have to coordinate a takeover of all the nuclear states simultaneously whilst also ensuring that nuclear weapons, biological weapons, and chemical weapons do not fall into the hands of radicals that would use these weapons for their own purposes. It's just not going to happen.
