Interestingly, Dawkins wrote of a small island like off the coast of Africa or ykno somewhere. There was an american military plane that crashed on the island, the pilot was withdrawn without speaking much to the natives and things went on. Thirty someodd years later american or whoever went to retrieve the wreckage (who knows why) and it turned out that the natives worshiped the plane, believing if they were honorable and virtuous, eventually the plane would be repaired and carry them all off to paradise. It's in our biology to believe something, friends, that does not mean any specific god myth should be given preferential treatment. Honestly, with the amount of information available out there, the only reason anyone can maintain a religious belief of any kind is through powerful fear of or failure to accept death. Or a persistent delusion held since childhood. There are literally no other reasons anyone was ever religious. In my not so humble opinion.

Using the argument that, because one set of beliefs is superstitious and based on misinformation, then all belief systems which rely on faith are false includes faulty logic. The way I see it is like this: 1.) We have evidence to prove the universe is finite and that It started (or began expanding) a little over 13 billion years ago. 2.) Because the universe is finite and had a beginning (and because recent discoveries in the realm of physics have shown us that gravity cannot overcome the rate at which the universe is expanding) I must dismiss classical theories on the universe being infinite or lasting forever (such as the very silly "steady state model" and others). If you find a credible physicist and argue with him against our current big bang model, you will be most likely be laughed at (unless its one of those loony "theoretical physicists" often featured on TV). en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Future_of_an_expanding_universe 3.) Because the universe had a beginning and will continue to expand until an event called "The Big Freeze," (Thanks dark energy!) I do not find it entirely unreasonable for people to assume that there could be higher-dimensional beings that set our universe in motion and perhaps even crafted the laws of physics that govern it. Having faith in the method of science means also being able to understand that, while science is an excellent tool for developing our technology and understanding of the universe, it will not always lead to absolute truth about the universe. We as humans are limited in what we can observe through our senses. Think about the centuries in which people though that Newtonian mechanics was absolute truth. It was completely scientifically proven at the time with the best technology available. It wasn't until later that Einstein showed us that Newtonian mechanics isn't correct, and only appears to be true from certain points of view. Agnosticism is the only truly intelligent way to go about religious/spiritual beliefs. From what we can tell, we cannot know and may never be able to know all absolute truths about our existence. George Anons You talk a lot of sense. But I have to agree with OP, anyone who follows organized religion is delusional.
@georgeanons301
10 жыл бұрын
RollAnotherJ Furthermore, the OP writes that all men who participated in organized religion did so out of fear. This may be true for some religions, but If you want to find an anomaly that is worthy of your study, I recommend looking into Judaism and its development. Judaism is different from all religions before it, but the fact that society has labeled it a "religion" to categorize it with all of the animist and polytheistic belief systems has likely turned you off to believing it to be authentic.

George Anons By the way you sound, I'm sure you identify yourself as Agnostic. For your info, Agnostics are Atheists. You're either Agnostic Atheists aka Atheists(You don't believe in the theist assertion of god or gods and have no knowledge or do not know if a creator exists.) Gnostic Atheist(One who doesn't believe in the theist assertion of god or gods and KNOWS of the Non-existence of god or gods-- I don't think there's anyone like this. You can't possibly know of the non-existence of a creator.) Gnostic Theist aka Theists(One who claims to have knowledge and belief of god or gods. Religious people eg Christianity, Islam, Judaism, buddhism etc) Agnostic Theists(One who believes in a creator being but does not accept religion or have any knowledge of where the creator is located eg Deists) By the way you sound, I believe you're Agnostic Atheist aka Atheist, just like every other Atheist on the planet.(Assuming there are no Gnostic Atheists which is complete madness.)

Robert A Heinlein was at the table, in the bar, when Hubbard said "you don't get rich writing books, the best way to get rich, is to invent a religion. No matter how stupid, people will believe it." And he went on and did just that; invent the stupidest religion even invented. And yet thousands are sucked in by this load of fetid dingo's kidneys every year. +Jordan Conley I can accept it. It sounds like a pretty good deal actually, if it were only that simple. However there are still too many unanswered questions in the realm of science and the paranormal. I personally have recorded dozens of voices and other strange phenomena in past years. Still not sure what to do with the "god" concept though but I'm highly objective about things and I have absolutely zero need to"believe" in anything. Reality works just fine for me. So we shouldn't worry about religion on this side, but instead think about how life might be for us on the other side, as it were.

Really professional audio and announcing there, ace. I could make out about three words.
I remember when people made a big deal out of stuff like this being 101 seconds long
What are these words? I am a Muslim and I am not convinced with these words at all
Actually Hubbard came up with the idea behind Dianetics with a Sci-Fi Writers Club in the late 1940s.. He complained that sci-fi writing only paid a penny per word, then one of his colleagues suggested:"why not start your own religeon, you don't have to pay any taxes"
Wow.. That book is amazing. Thank you so much for the share.

you've really got to wonder how Hubbard got the first person in
Scientology. . I don't think that's a religion.

@georgeanons301

The story about Hubbard making a bar bet to invent a religion, is 100% factual. Because they can't accept that you're born, you live, you die and that's it. There must be a higher power and a place to go when you're dead. It's how people deal with the death of loved ones and children. They imagine them as angels and we'll all be together again one day. It's harmless. Until it's harmful (Indiana).
@ManuelMartinez-pd9sj

Jordan Conley I don't know about thousands of years of genocidal conquest being harmless though. I can't lie to my child. @punchline43

When I was 10, I got very angry at my mother, because she was a lunatic who was a hypocrite and knew nothing about parenting. She accused me for things I never did. I tried to walk away to calm down, but she had the nerve to order me to get her a drink, and I ended up stomping on my cat that was lying innocently on the kitchen floor 5 times. I saw a pool of blood surround him, and I knew I made a bad decision out of blind anger. That moment, I learned how to control myself without God...
