Following an oil spill, in-situ burning is commonly used to burn oil from the surface of ocean water. But could a tiny magnetic sponge be a cheaper, more environmentally friendly solution to clean the millions of gallons of oil spilled into the ocean yearly?
Scientists have created a special material by modifying polyurethane foam that can suck oil out of water to be reused.
So, how far could this tech go in solving environmental disasters? The Hard Reset Podcast hosts sit down to discuss the potential this small sponge has to create enormous ripple effects.

Every city has to deal with waste treatment. Imagine a sponge filter that absorbs chemicals out of the waste water. 😮

my thought goes to - can it be designed to filter gold from the ocean? Or remove saline from sea water?

Thanks for covering this again....just curious if someone has contacted the oil companies directly (a reporter) to shed some light onto why they have not invested. There has to be a reason that the government has not stepped up......any up-dates from the researchers? There seems to be a problem much bigger than just money, as it has been a "year ago" since the story (video) was first posted.

What comes onto the surface is a small fraction of the spill, wouldn't change much, the sponge will be solid waste afterwards anyway. This thing doesn't solve any issue related to an oil spill

✌🏻😎🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿oil companies should donate money towards this project. Or the companies that have a history of damaging the ecosystem should be forced to pay for this project.

The hard part is done, which is inventing this material. Now hopefully variations of this can be tested for different applications to accommodate a variety of problems. Good job smarties!

i think that would add a lot of cost and complexity as well as increasing fuel costs for transport. i think it would be better just to deploy it when a spill happens

11:24 100s of millions of dollars is what the oil companies would rather spend on Supreme Court justices and congress in order to deregulate themselves. It s not the 1970s.
