Science communications matters and how to do it better | Jo Filshie Browning | TEDxBasel

How scientific research is communicated really matters! Every day we make decisions about our health, our lives and our environment based on scientific information. How can we start to make communications an essential and routine part of the scientific process? Jo Filshie Browning is a communications coach dedicated to helping people understand the benefits of science and medicine. Over more than 25 years she has helped scientists and physicians speak with impact and authority about their work and her book ‘Scientifically Speaking: How to speak about your research with confidence and clarity’ is an Amazon best-seller. Jo began her career as a journalist before moving into communications, training and consultancy. She studied English at Oxford University and holds a Diploma in Public Relations and a Post Graduate Diploma in Science and Society. She’s trained more than 11,000 people across 43 countries and four continents. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. At a time where news and media move fast and carry intentionally scary and messages to the public, it is vital that the truth comes across in way that is understood. This talk from Jo browning is a must-hear message for all scientists, journalists and communicators. Well done Jo!

Incredible presentation and tremendously relevant to the issues of today. 👏🏼🙌🏼 As a nutritionist I constantly have clients approaching me with scares about the food they eat or don’t or if they should take the new miracle drug or method out on the market. If scientist knew how to properly convey the truth in a simple way (the PHD way) then the voices of the salesman selling the snack-oils would not over power them. Scientist would gain the trust they so deserve and we all would be healthier for it. 💛

Thanks so much. You are right. The World Health Organisation calls this an Infodemic. There is so much misinformation about science in the public discourse. It's more important than ever for scientists to be involved actively in the communication of their work.

A great talk, and it couldn’t be more relevant than ever in today’s world. Super important for the individual to understand how they are being communicated to and in what context, as well as how organisations can Communicate better with patients. Also great insight into how media can sensationalise and creates a story from something fairly inoccuous…
