More About "The Bargain":
Cora is indentured in the service of Hue, the creator and owner of time-exchanging technology. She is alive thanks to Hue's monthly 'payments': on her own, she'd have only a few weeks left. She works as his bodyguard and assistant, extracting or injecting time from his clients. She is horrified by Hue's predatory deals, but complaining means breaching her contract. However, when a single mother of two falls victim to his extortion, Cora's leash finally snaps. She now has to choose between her future or the life of a stranger.

As the "bad guy" money lender put it to her right at the end "Someone has to look after the children." It always has been. Many people work all day...every day...just to make ends meet. Others trade their time for luxuries and things they don't need. Some are fortunate enough to have the means to spend their time doing whatever they please and pay others to manage everything they don't want to deal with. Time is very much a commodity. It's the most precious one we have. As medical advances continue to improve, health will continue to cost more and more. Dying is often times expensive but is still cheaper than living.

It already is. It's already fungible too, and used by those with more to exploit those without in a way that entrenches their power further. You trade your time for money, money can buy you time. If you don't have enough, you'll have to do anything to get at least enough to survive. So those with enough money bargain your future potential against you current survival to their advantage. It's a metaphor for capitalism.

I've seen this theme so much lately. It'll never be a reality but a metaphor of how the working class are treated. I see and experience it on a daily basis. We live in a right to work state, meaning its a right for any business to deny you employment and fire you for any reason they seem to find worthy in their own eyes as an offense. We sell our time to live, we borrow money to eat, feed our kids and pay for medical expenses. We sell our kids to the IRS for a refund check. I wish more people would wake up and look around. Most live blindly and ignorantly by choice. They feel they have no other option. I found that to be false. I refuse to sell myself to any entity.

This started out really, really interesting with an artistic, creative idea, good audio & lighting that drew me in. But the story only went so far. The story line had an intro, but then went flat, there was no second or third act. It just fizzled. It felt like a great opportunity wasted. It failed to deliver on its initial promise, at least for me. The acting was good at the start, but the dialog destroyed it about half way thru. This film began with 'showing the story' and degraded into 'telling the story via dialog'...which for me is a huge disappointment - to explicitly tell the story to the viewer rather than shown the story to the viewer is very bad, in my opinion. The dialog between the assistant and the master near the end was a disaster...like a metronome, static, back and forth, stilted. In general, I thought he did a pretty good job, nice facial expressions which made him interesting to watch. Mom was not as quite as desperate as I would imagine a dying person with children might be. The assistant was the stereotypical slave girl? She had very little presence or energy on screen. The decision at the end was a no brainer for mom, so that lacked any tension or really any moral conflict, so the take away feeling wasn't there. The comparison between the decision made by the assistant and the mom was missing something...maybe because the morality play was weak - evil master taking advantage of people for money. But that is a very old morality theme and the plot line here didn't bring out the required emotional impact - all the characters played their part as expected. There wasn't anything unexpectedly revealed about human nature. Assistant dies rather than work for the man (live free or die!), mom does what she has to in order to stay alive for her children. Not a lot of mystery. Conflict wasn't developed over time, "give me time" and "ok, pay for it" - this missed the opportunity to develop conflict and tension over time, over multiple interactions between mom & master. W.r.t. time vs money...this tradeoff is worth writing about, but for me it is not as interesting as time vs murder, or money vs morality. The assistant took her morality over more time, but it was a form of suicide not self-sacrifice since someone else took her place, and nothing was changed. So this, to me, is too binary - "I'll die but not really change or help anyone else because I can't live with how the world is". I think a little philosophy could have been added to this to make it more thought worthy. Like a quote about 'what living is' from the assistant as she left. Or a comment about "meaning of life" from the master. Not just dialog related to logics. That way the viewer would be emotionally triggered and pushed more to think about the meaning of life. This was future life orientated only, which is ok, but it could have included ideas related to what a person has accomplished up to this point in their life. I never really got the emotional anxiety of time running out. Audio could have been leveraged for this...having the tick-tock of a clock in the back ground as they negotiate at the table. Having the viewer have a strong emotional disturbance of time running out would have been great for this film. The whole concept of 'deadline' was weak...because everyone had yet another month. A lot could happen in a month to get another month...and another month...

Sci-fi short - comments by Jan Beware of spoilers! Bargain by Eleonora Mignoli Plot: Conversational drama about the value of life (literally). The plot leaves no holes, everything we need to know is there, story is closed well and it is combined with a twist. Negatives: 1) one small from a logic point of view: if he would do such business, there would have to be more people with more weapons around him; 2) I think that the scene where she quits, the wording does not fit the acting, either she should have been more dramatic, or the words should be different Positives: 1) I like that it is just few people talking, no action, techno-aspect is just as it needs to be Personal note: Good ol` sci-fi: “Oh no, I wish I would not watch that!” :- ) Summary: Very good, leaves very bad feeling inside (and that is a good training for life…). Similar to “Final Offer” in storytelling and setting.

It has been already done in 2011. Also; not every short film should be extended to a full film. Not every story needs to be hyper-deep. It's very easy to fall for this trap and then you end up with 90 minutes of filler crap and 10 minutes of the original story. Enjoy it for what it is.

Greedy monster. Any large company operates the same. They slowly, but insidiously test each employee and customer, to see how much they can get away with. 30-40 years ago UPS have employees gold coins as a thanksgiving gift it Christmas. Years later, it was a big turkey, fast forward - a coupon for aprox. $10. Then it changed to an office potluck. After that Zero acknowledgement.

This was shot in Sheffield (UK) and it took a few months between concept and final results. The biggest wait was between shot day number one (the inside shot) and shot day number two (outside shot) as we were hoping to get a roof location. Unfortunately out budget didn't allow for the expense! The post-production was also pretty long but mostly because the team was busy...
