Yes but it’s very dark. We don’t have the best track record treating and caring for people with mental and physical differences. Actually even today parents can test for DS while pregnant to decide whether to keep it. (Might be different after Roe vs Wade reversal).

Tam.. having my heart in the right place, I met this girl who worked in a convenience store and was just Charming. She was definitely challenged but I felt a connection there. I was even afraid to initiate a conversation about her personal life, but when I did, I discovered she was actually married and had young children. I felt a little silly, but then super happy. Someone else had discovered what I already knew.. she was indeed someone special:-) I also learned something about life that day. We can never assume. Life really always does.. find a way

Thank you. I'm at my 28 years of age this year, and my whole life I have lived with my dear Uncle "Paulinho" as we - and himself - call him. He's an angel, like many we see in this film, and today he has 62 years. He's such a kind and pure soul, always smiling, and yes, hugging! I love him my whole heart and maybe that's why this movie made me tear up. My most sincere and warm hugs to the amazing cast of this short movie. I Loved it. May all those "Paulinhos" (he says that when he sees another one who has down syndrome) live happy, long and amazing lives.

@@dsjjfgI think you missed the point. The point is people treat people with DS like they’re incompetent or stupid, just because they’re different. If you judged a fish’s intelligence and competency by how well it could climb a tree, you’d be the silly one. Hence the movie. They’re treating their kid like he’s incompetent because he’s a fish in a world of monkeys. Hell the short film even connects him *with a fish* by showing it grow as he grows.

As an adult who lives life on the autism spectrum, this story is so moving. Few “normal” people can understand who I am, because of how my brain works. I was always the “odd” child, that one that other kids made fun of or were a little afraid of, because I was different. Yet, as an adult, I’ve found a place in society. I can help people in profound ways that others can’t, and am valued for that. Still, I long for the company of those like me, and so far have found none.

No worries about the CGI fish. Fish generally, carp (goldfish are (several) types of carp) especially, will only grow to the maximum size their environment can support. This depends on three things; the volume of their environment, and how many of them share it (and how many other creatures are around who also need space and resources), and the available quantity of the resources needed for survival. They’re much better at it than we humans are.

But nothing needs to be fixed. Nothing is broken. They're perfectly just the way they are, just as everyone is perfectly different. God bless you loves! Glad to see you all get a chance to shine!

I almost forgot why i got into filmmaking. Today I remember its because of things like this, because its an art. Something that could touch peoples heart. Thank you DUST for keeping that flame alive by supporting artists. Thank you

Although the Twilight Zone 'Eye of the Beholder' episode kinda did this already, I really appreciate the different take. I highly recommend listening to Jim Breuer talk about the Twilight Zone SNL skit, Norm Macdonald is a Savage...

A rare moment of a short movie where they do not drag you through a garbled story with a sophisticated message noone in the end gets because some concept of art overwhelmed the makers - This story here was downright clear from the first couple of seconds on. And absolutely brilliantly told until the very end. - That's real art for me: Telling a real story with a meaning. Thank you.

"Downside Up" is a wonderful creation. It reminds me on an old Twilite Zone episode. The parents of a child that was "Different" was sent to a place for other "different" people to live a "normal" life amonst his kind of people. And, as I recall, the 1960's sitcome, "The Munsters", had a daughter that was different from the parents, and therefore, was considered "challanged".

Genious, I loved to see this movie so much! Not only the story itself is heartwarming and just incredibly well done for a short, also the actors, by nature, give it such a warming touch! One could say, that even the title alone had been carefully selected, just love this short.

"The people" are there, some of them even are actors, most of them can read, and write. I was honoured in my job education as Preschool/ Kindergarten teacher to do part of my training in a supportive school. As a film maker, you would just need to ask around in supportgroups, who would want to be part of a film project. It saddens me still, that disabilities are viewed as "having this or that problem", we dont say that to the visually disabled, who rely on a disability aid product called correctional lenses. Why is there still such a big issue about trisomy 23 or Autism, or even cerebral palsy? We are all unique people with unique personalities, abilities and talents.
