    Holy crap I had no idea that making tyres was so dramatic. Half expecting Bruce Willis to turn up in a vest. Die Hard 8: The Tyre Factory... where commuting ends and racing begins, in a land where punctures are a distant memory, one man stands between kevlar beading and the forces of evil...

    LOL. Punctures a distant memory? Schwalbe tires are so horribly bad, I had three punctures due to blackberry thorns in one year. I've been riding through the same blackberry-lined bike lanes for three years on Maxis Hookworms for three years now and had not a single puncture. AVOID SCHWALBE AT ALL COST unless you really love repairing punctures.

    This video really show how much hard work goes into making a quality bicycle tire. I was surprised how much skilled manual labor that it takes to build a tire before vulcanization. What I would like to know is how the properties of the rubber change after time? Also, how many years until problems occur, due to changes in hardness and composition. I have some older tires that are unused, but coming apart after 15+ years of storage and no usage. I'm guessing its best to store in dry cool area?

    What about embedding a thin strip of metal into the tyre. This would eliminate sharp objects such as glass, thorns etc from puncturing the tyres. No matter how strong the rubber is, it cannot prevent punctures like a strip of metal. As a long distance commuter this would help me tremendously. Currently I use anti-puncture liners, but they're not that good. Its the smallest fragments of glass that causes my punctures.

    ya00007 the tyre would weight over a kilogram and half. It would be very hard to pedal with that. And due to constant deformation, the metal stripe would slice through the tyre.

    I have had maybe 5 flat tyres (in 7 years) with their "puncture resistant" tyres but overall they are pretty durable tyres. They were all caused by sharp little crushed stones that are used during winter on bike & pedestrian paths.

    Probably. Also you have to realize the reason tire manufacturing has moved to Asia isn't necessarily because of just cheaper labor, it is because of rubber itself. A lot of the world superpower countries have imposed regulations on how much rubber companies can manufacturer - due to environmental pollution and taxation of that pollution. Moving manufacturing to Asia for cheaper labor is just a bonus, but is really a way to evade stringent government regulation.

    Of course there's no consensus on tyres b/c ... THEY ALL FAIL.... how is that? Yet kevlar/Aramid felt liners (not a silly little 1mm Aramid "bead", but paper-light, full-coverage felts) has kept me out of the grime thru decades of commuting and touring. No more cares about tyres. I've seem them all burst, but that one liner keeps on riding.

    Schwalbe? They ought to be named "Schwobble"! I've had FIVE Smart Sam tires, all with a terrible wobble in them. Even the warranty replacements were wobbly. Not acceptable for a $90 tire! And yes, the rims were true, and the tires seated correctly. If there was a suitable 29er substitute for the Smart Sam, I'd never buy another "Schwobble" tire again!

    This is what happens in China: the foreign companies make a product and make sure it is manufactured to their specifications. The Chinese then copy the product and make it significantly sub-standard trying to save every penny and sell it for a cheaper price. Us in the foreign countries see the cheap Chinese knock offs only if someone (Wallyworld) is willing to import them. Mean while in China you can buy the cheap knock off for a fraction of the price we can get them for here in the USA. Most of the time when you buy something there you have to be really careful of the quality as even the best stuff there is worse than the cheapest stuff here (USA)... This is my experience from living there 7 years...

    @nigahiga6400

    Made in China doesn't mean bad quality. Different tire companies have different standards for tires and tubes. My stock Cheng Shin tubes for my commuter were made in China (not Taiwan). The thickness varied, and within two months the valve stem developed a leak. I replaced them with Continental Tour tubes for 700c, also made in China. Right off the bat the Contis were better in quality. The rubber's thickness was uniform throughout, and the elasticity was much better (the CST could accomodate 700x38-43, Conti could go from 700x32-47). Now after 5 months of regular riding the Continental tubes never gave any problems, and lost less air than the Cheng Shins, plus they give me much more flexibility in tire sizing. I once was a cheapskate and stuck to brands like Cheng Shin, but I got a ton of headaches from flats, tires that were lopsided or deformed, and premature dry rot of the sidewalls. I never wore down a CST completely because they all developed some sort of problem. I had a Cheng Shin that started to develop bubbles in the sidewall, which then exploded, sounding like a shotgun at 90psi. Recently I switched my commuter bike's tires to some Continentals. At $20 a piece they're more expensive than Chinese brand tires, but so far after 2000 miles I have not experienced a flat, and the tread shows little signs of wear. They were made in India, but that's insignificant because Continental has some strict quality standards for their suppliers. Same goes with Schwalbe. I know several riders who swear by the Marathon. Yes it's expensive, but it will likely outlast cheaper tires (some guy logged almost 60,000km on a Marathon) and be much more resistant to flats. It's all about quality control.

They are fast and light but there is a problem with the materials they use. I wont be buying schwalbe tyres again!
