Michael respected Mika because he was a married man and a future family man, with kids. Mika was not a party person. Just look at the drivers Michael put off the track they were not guys with family.

@Adam Chlebovec I think bc of their differing off track personalities and also the stereotypes connected to their nationalities, we tend to judge the dirty aspects of Senna's and Schumacher's driving differently. It's simply easier to paint the calculated German as a villain than the eccentric Brazilian. There are plenty of similarities to how the two conducted themselves on the track, both deliberately crashed into their rivals to secure a World Championship for instance. It was common practice for both in on track battles to position their cars in a way that left the opposing driver with only two options: either give up the position, or crash. For behavior like this, Senna is hailed as a mad genius, an all-or-nothing type of driver, someone who would never back down from a fight (an interpretation undoubtedly reaffirmed by the mystique he tragically earned through an on track death). Compare that to Michael who is seen as plain dirty and a bad sportsman and winner for it. I believe if there somehow was a motorsports fan who didn't know these two guys and had no pre-existing opinion of them and you showed him tapes of their driving, he wouldn't judge Michael and Senna too differently.

When I met Mika 3 years back at the Singapore GP he asked me why I was wearing a Ferrari T-shirt and I replied because of Michael, and he smiled and his eyes began to water a bit and said 'on track he might have been my greatest rival, but off track he was an amazing friend' and that kinda made me cry seeing Mika put out so much emotions on display and how he felt about Michael

People will have a lot to say about this but I think it was one of the best moves in formula 1 history they always show it Regarding When on the build up to spa it Was lap after lap no way past so it had to be that move or nothing it was amazing and the press conference at the end of the race was funny but mutual respect ! 🏁🏁🏁

A Macca Agreed. I remember watching that live and it took my breathe away. It wasn’t just the move itself, but the context. Towards the end of a tight championship battle that had been going back and forth, and Schumacher was blocking him for lap after lap to the point you doubted Hakkinen would get through - then the 1 in a million timing of Zonta and history was made.

1998 clearly with the best car, 1999 almost lost the title to Irvine due to his own mistakes (MSC broked his legs as shown at 4:06 in the video). In 2000 with cars more closely matched, he lost in the penultimate race. In 2001 the McLaren wasn't that competitive and even Coulthard had a better season than Häkkinen (just like in 1997). He's a bit overrated in my opinion. Schumacher probably said that because Hill and Villeneuve were at best just decent drivers that only won 1996 and 1997 respectively due to a blatant better car.

"It was a fair fight mainly from my side" Haha, well, yeah, that's one thing Schumacher and Senna had in common: they were brilliant, but reckless drivers, they wanted to win at any cost.

In the years in which they used to race, I used to hate Hakkinen. But it was because I was Schumacher fan and a child. Now, I see a very great rival of Michael, and a very good person.

I was on the other side of the fence. I can still remember the joy of seing that red car being left behind. Powerful feeling! Ferrari had the best car, that's why I cheered for Mika. Always a sucker for a good underdog story.

He would have won the first three-peat since Fangio had his engine not blew up so many times in 2000 season. Twice when he was leading the race. Had he finished those races, he would have won the championship, even if Schumi was clearly faster in last few races.

One thing that made Schumacher respect Hakkinen was the fact that Hakkinen didn´t fall for Michael´s mind games. Mika was always very strong on this, which is a typical fin trait, cold, efficient, no bullshit kind of person. You can see Michael respected him, while to other drivers you can see Schumacher was quite arrogant most of the times, because he saw them as mentally weak. While Mika was always Mika, not only he respected Michael, but he also knew when to show him the middle finger, the difference was that Mika showed him with a smile, fastest laps and wins. While others would burst into a insult fight and get the emotions best them on track.

They also remained good friends off the track, with Mika and his wife having visited the family several times since Schumi's discharge from hospital after the skiing incident, and Mika flew to Brazil as a guest of Michael's for Michael's final race with both Ferrari and Mercedes (the two times he retired from racing).

They had 4 years in strong cars against each other and 2 times Mika and 2 times Schumacher won. Many people forget that. Head to head, they were equally strong. You cant just say the one has more titles so he is better... They had these 4 years and it ended in a draw. AWESOME races between these two. Although i always was and will be the Mika fan. It's shame how it ended. Michael deserved better. I seem to remember Scuhmacher said that with of all his rivalries that the had, he missed the one with Mika the most. When they both were at the top of their game. Competing for greatness....

As a kid i was a huge Mika Häkkinen fan. For my personal oppinion he is the greatest of all times. Because he has been always fair never bad behavior and always a gentleman. A true racer and champion. Wish u all the best Mika :).

Couldn't agree more :) I was always a fan of Hakkinen and Hill - to the 90s in F1 were just fantastic.

He was the only competitor whom Micheal acknowledged being intimidated, and perhaps because Micheal could not evoke any emotional outburst out of him. Whatever Micheal thrown at him, he would reply with precision and calmness, and any little hints of advantage Mika would pounce like a tiger.

The respect and admiration between the two was amazing. I loved Schumacher but the way Mika speaks about Schumi, I have nothing but respect for the man. Two amazing drivers and gave us some amazing moments in F1

As a fan of Michael I used to hate Mika (I was very young), but as I grew up I can only respect this man. You can feel in his voice that he has nothing other than respect for Michael and their rivalry, this is almost wholesome to listen to him talk about Michael

There's nothing not to love about Mika. A great racer, undeniable. And a thoroughly good person. A perfect rival for "the Michael".

1:57 great moment..two sportmen fight each other, argue and then smile together...what an era..

They had a mutual respect for each other. There was a beautiful moment in a post race interview.

What a class act. What a fantastically wonderful gentleman. What a competitor. What a driver. Mika , you were always my favorite. "The Michael " was always pushing to a higher level.

The real beauty of it is that, when he talks about it, you can still see the competitiveness in his face and hear it in his voice. The truest tragedy is that it is unlikely these two will ever be reunited on track ever again, even for fun. They may both have been stoic drivers, not press heavy, but this was the greatest rivalry in F1 history.

Only for THAT overtake in Spa 2000 deserve a place in history. Beat Schumacher and won two championships is for legends like him.

I remember watching it live, and will always remember that moment. A momentous overtake, not only in the context of the race, but the swing in momentum in the championship.

This was probably the best sports videos ive ever watched on youtube. thank you mika and thank you michael. we will never have that again and i am proud that i was alive when you raced each other

Definitely enjoyed this one the most. Mika truly understands Michael as a person.

@@mjb1655 Mate Alonso's renault was bulletproof at the time. Fast and reliable, something which the Ferrari's were not. The fact that Schumacher pushed Alonso in that dog of car in 2006 season is a testament to his greatness.

Finally the one we have been waiting for... This video was more highly anticipated than the actual start of the season!

They should do a sequel of the Rush movie for these two.

I will never forget the overtake of SPA 2000. I was crying behind the TV. Thank you Mika. We love you.

mika was never afraid of Schumacher, it was a blow to the German who did a lot of dirty races to win the Hakkinen, that's the truth.

And no, Schumi didn't do a single dirty race to win over Mika, in fact Schum8 had less then 5 dirty races in his entire carear You are uneducated about F1 and it's history if you belive anything that you wrote

If that was the case then why was Hill about to when the championship in 94. Where tf was michaels teammate finishing? Nowhere near the top.

The fact, that mika speaks the truth but in an extremely friendly and respectfull way, shows that he is one of a kind!!!!

That pass at Spa was amazing. Wish there were more sportsmen like Mika.

I don't even know how many time I rewatched this video...but it gives me goosbumps every time.

Just love the respect between these two drivers, how they'll explain and listen each other if they're problems between them, how they are happy and respectful to race with each other. Beautiful sportsmanship.

Their rivalry is worth a movie. I hope they make one someday

Michael vs. Mika was one of the best fights ever. Always clean and respectful. Always on the limit. And BTW, Mika is such a nice guy... All the best to him and to Michael, of course! #KeepFightingChamp

It was the great rivalry between these two legends that made me love the F1 so much. Huge respect for the two greats of all time.

Mika Hakkinen was the reason we became fans of Mclaren and F1 in general. The rivarly against Schumi was something else. For sure Mika was Schumi's greatest rival and as Michael said Mika was the only driver he respected and also "feared" the most.

Brilliant interview! The battles with Michael and Mika are some of the greatest in F1 history :D

@steveninthe Max Verstappen is a one of case caused by a loop hole in the regulations that is now patched (and that shows because although he is rapidly fast he is also very crash happy) even still you can't say the cars are easy to drive as he has shown incredible ability, regardless i apologies for the name calling and the wording of my comment i will retrack it but i got legitimely upset with the wording of your comment "I need drivers fighting the steering wheel driving monsters and hanging on for dear life" if you ask me that wording is against modern safety standards.

Every time I see a clip of Mika and Michael fighting on track I get this sense of true, hard earned respect from both drivers to one another. Both knew they had to be the best driver they could to stand a chance against one another, and that is something truly beautiful to see

Schumacher always admitted that Mika was the one he genuinely feared And yet there was such a mutual respect you just don’t get that now

I see a lot of mutual respect between people like Hamilton and Vettel, and Vettel and Raikkonen for example.

I used to hate this guy as a kid. Now that I actually understand rivals and know how they treated each other I love this dude. No media attacks, just racing. Fight it out on the track, not in the press like they do these days. There will never be any greater drivers than these two. Even if Hamilton and Vettel win 20 WDC's both, they cant be compared to greats like this.

I got up into F1 watching these 2 go at it. Being a Schumacher fan for life, I have more respect for Mika than any other driver out there for his professional attitude and talent to match Michael in speed consistently. I feel privileged to get to watch these two legends go head to head and behave like professionals afterward

Loved this rivalry by far.. miss those days

Hakkinen and Michael (my childhood hero), without a doubt the greatest rivals and friends in the same time, I miss a lot those battles.
