Schumacher's Greatest Rivals: David Coulthard

Спорт

They may have only been championship rivals once in 2001, but David Coulthard's relationship with Michael Schumacher was unlike any other. The Scot discusses everything from shared crash helmets to flared tempers - and of course what made the seven-time champion so hard to beat.

Guess you could say Coulthard in the end was too nice, because that race at Magny-Cours 2000 where he became relentless and unforgiving because Schumi pissed him off twice, was the best race of his career. The absolute, absolute best always have something in common and it's that they're absolutely demonic behind the wheel. Still Coulthard is a legend in his own right and has had a respectable career most could dream of.

@@kukuc96 Completely agree. When you are racing Hakkinen, M. Schumacher, Barichello, Montoya, R. Schumacher (and he was a great driver too remember, countless podiums and 6 wins), Raikkonen, Alonso and Button, it's really really hard to win a championship. It's really hard to win a race. Hell, even finishing in the points is not that easy. Pretty much like it was in the 80s, winning a championship being an extremely hard thing to do when you had Prost, Senna, Piquet and Mansell on the grid. DC deserves more credit. Same goes for R. Schumacher, Montoya, Fisichella and Barichello.

Just wish i could have meet the guy just once. Ask him about some of his stories, what is his most memorable. Maybe one day in the afterlife. Im just next to 1000's that want to meet him. But throughout all these years, i still remember that day off the accident. Didn't believe it for a while. And thats the thing. With my age, he was one of the legends i got to see. Well kinda the only one. Sure i obviously seen the rest of the grid when Michael raced, but i mean like Senna, all the legends. I would have loved to see Senna, Michael and Coulthard all race. @@thelarry383 I saw the race live on TV, they came from a corner, there was serious spray in the track and DC lifted the throttle. After the race, telemetry on DC McLaren was audited by FIA; they found no evidence of braking (as alleged by Ferrari), only throttle lift, which DC, in his defense, said that was to help MS overtake, therefore FIA took no action. What was strange was the race being in the last laps, MS was way ahead, and DC, who was a fast driver with a fast car, lost so much time in the last laps. That, my friend, no KZread replay will show you.

David Coulthard admitted full responsibility for that Spa '98 accident back in 2001, I believe. During the driver's briefing prior to the race, it was agreed that in those conditions, cars being lapped would not lift, if I remember correctly. Why Coulthard is backtracking now, is anyone's guess.
