1999 Malaysian Grand Prix Highlights
The Formula One race was held on 17 October 1999 at the new Sepang International Circuit near Sepang, Malaysia. It was the fifteenth race of the 1999 Formula One World Championship. This was the first Malaysian Grand Prix since a Formula Holden event in 1995, but the first time at Formula One world championship level. Michael Schumacher returned to Formula One having recovered from his broken leg, and took pole position by nearly a second from Ferrari team-mate Eddie Irvine, with the McLarens of David Coulthard and Mika Häkkinen third and fourth respectively.

Imagine breaking your leg, being out of action for months, coming back in the penultimate race of the season and putting the car on pole by just one second. Then, at the beginning of the race, he pulled away from the pack, only to let Irvine pass later. Michael would have been world champion quite easily without his accident.

Yep. The title was his to lose. Maybe because just how memorable 2000 was, it made that season worth a few titles itself. Also maybe the broken leg, kept him wanting to stay in f1, to make up for the lost 1999 title. You could argue it either way.

Não porque o Schumi só ganhou o titulo em 2000 porque a Mc de Hakkinen explodiu o motor em Indianápolis @@seanjohal7
Schumi back after his break, and straight away out-qualifies the whole grid by a second.
schumacher simply the best, even he will do his best to help ferari and irvine in the 1999 championship
He would win the title if the brakes did not fail in silverstone 😞 best of all time Schumi

@TribandWell maybe, but Schumacher still had 4 DNF’s compared to Mika’s 3 DNF’s. Mclaren was also considered as the fastest car of the season.

@@MaroslavkaBut McLaren still had the reliability woes even with David Coulthard still racking up DNF's race after race after race. Ferrari still would have the constructor's anyway.

This was Michael's eighth title if it wasn't for the accident.

Also at 2007 and 2008 if he would stay. He beat Massa by 40 points at 2006 and Massa almost won the title at 08. He could be WDC also at 1998 if he did not suffer the puncture. The fact that he challenged dominant Williams at 1997 and Mclaren at 1998 was just mindblowing.

When you see what he did in his comeback in Malaysia, you can say without a doubt that without the accident he would have become world champion quite easily.

Overall i think he ended up with more than enough titles 94 he had an illegal car 95 was deserved From 96-99 he was the best driver. I think at the very least 97 and 99 were deserved. 99 he defo couldve won had it not been for his injury at silverstone I think 00-02 were all deserved but no doubt that 03 is the one that Kimi in the Mclaren shouldve won. 04 was deserved but the car was unbelievably good Only season where he had the best machinery and failed to win the title was in 06. Having said that alonso drove a mass damper that was eventually declared illegal

1999.... big black hole in the history of Formula 1. Schumacher couldn't fight for the title :(

Tell it as lie😒 Irvine didnt deserved the Title because he had lucky wins without any Pole Position. Note, won in Melbourne (started 6th) in A1 Ring (now Red Bull Ring, started 4th) in old good Hockenheimring (started also 4th) and Sepang (started 2nd). How would be a World Champion? Schumi did that better in next season because he is the Top of the Tops🙂😉

@@MyNicolinho Really? Irvine had been consistent in the points scoring positions. His only non-points finishes in 1999 was at the Nurburgring, and at Imola (which was his only DNF) he had engine failure while running in 3rd. Mika Hakkinen was underserving of a championship because of his bad attitude between Belgium and Nurburgring. While his view of being cheated out of 3 race wins worth of world points is true but he should've accepted that David Coulthard had the better car at Spa and moved on, but no he gave up on purpose at Monza when he spun out. It's the consistency in scoring points and fighting for race wins and podiums is what wins championships in motorsport, you don't necessarily have to be on pole position or win a lot of races you just have to keep adding up as many points as possible. That's what Ferrari and Irvine did well in, which is how Ferrari won the constructor's. The only thing that would've changed it all in favor of Irvine as if Giancarlo Fisichella challenged Hakkinen for the race win because if he pulled it off that would've meant 4 less points for Hakkinen and Irvine would've been world champion

@@zanemarte9877 Then tell me why Irvine had bad performance in Spa, Monza and Nürburgring (I still remember how loses his car on chicane, finished 7th with no points)? Did you know in Sepang hadnt got good gap and Schumacher help him to win the first ever Malaysian Grand Prix in Formula 1 history? And at the season finale in Suzuka why Irvine started and finished 3rd instead to fight with Mika Häkkinen for the title?😒😒 In next season Schumacher did it better and he absolutely deserved his 3rd (out of 7 World Titles) Title and ends 21 years of waiting😊😊😊 Friendly, right?🙂

The best no 2 performance weekend. He found a way to make the winner look like it was the greatest day of his life when he broke his leg. Irvine lol. Schumacher wasn't trying at Japan 1999. Hakkinen needed to win it.

Hakkinen was less worthy though. At Monza he just threw the wheel out of his car after spinning out into the gravel giving up without even attempting to restart his car and assumed his engine was dead out of anger and frustration over Belgium which was long over.

McLaren was slower than Ferrari in this race, obviously. I also believe that McLaren lacked in many races in the tactics department.

Ferrari had an illegal car in that race but they got away with that which was ofc expected.
