School strike for climate - save the world by changing the rules | Greta Thunberg | TEDxStockholm

Greta Thunberg realized at a young age the lapse in what several climate experts were saying and in the actions that were being taken in society. The difference was so drastic in her opinion that she decided to take matters into her own hands. Greta is a 15-year-old Stockholm native who lives at home with her parents and sister Beata. She’s a 9th grader in Stockholm who enjoys spending her spare time riding Icelandic horses, spending time with her families two dogs, Moses and Roxy. She love animals and has a passion for books and science. At a young age, she became interested in the environment and convinced her family to adopt a sustainable lifestyle. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

As a Pacific islander i cried. My ancestors been living on these islands for thousands of years. I come from an island just a few feet above sea level. We rely 100% on what we grow. Our high tides are becoming more frequent & more damaging. The taro is our main staple food along with breadfruit & bananas, but now most of our taro patches are becoming salinated because salt water is seeping into our underground water lenses making our only main source of fresh water salty. Fewer fish is also a major issue. Long droughts & frequent storms killing people, livestock & destroying farms. I thank this young women for speaking on such issue. ❤️

If I was there, I want to give you a hug. I know many people said that the world problems are more complicated and only a speech from an angry girl can't make any impacts. But from the bottom of my heart, I really appreciate your courage to speak up for our generation. You deserve more empathy rather than the criticism. Thanks to your speech, I've taken actions to save our environment by donating 10% of my monthly salary to cultivate trees in the National Parks in Vietnam and I promise to do this from now on to the rest of my life. Because as she said, if a problem is so grave that it threatens our own existence then everybody should be talking about it and nothing else until it's addressed. To those who think "If the planet is doomed tf am I in school for?!", it is exactly what you're in school for. Not only because that would cultivate more scientists and engineers that are capable of understanding the issues and continuing to improve the solutions, but also because school would spread correct information which is the reason young kids know better than many older people and support Greta's point. So use her shouts as an inspiration to work harder, not as an excuse to be lazy or to blame everything on others. It is a progress, and it will only progress if everyone takes up responsibility they're capable of.

Reducing emissions would have massive costs and do little good, because the natural CO2 absorption (by oceans, land etc) to return to preindustrial levels will take more than 100,000 years... So it seems to me, what we should be doing is invest in research for carbon sink technologies and other similar directions -- not bankrupt entire economies while yelling fire.

USA doesn't need to reduce emissions. Co2 is 1/3rd of photo synthesis, increased Co2 means increased availability for the proliferation of bio mass, more bio mass means more food, more energy and what isn't consumed, is sequestered and becomes.. you guessed it, Oil.

@@purple_latte1441 While you might be correct that she did not write it i too find it hard to believe. If you observe it’s so obvious that it isn’t being spoken like it is her very own speech. There is barely any passion nor is there any indicator that it comes from her very heart but at the same time I understand it’s probably anxiety inducing to be on a stage in front of many strangers. However, as an autistic person myself with horrible anxiety and someone who has spent years growing up around countless different autistic individuals on all levels on the spectrum I assure you a lot of us would show obvious body language and clear signs that what we are saying comes from within as we are highly sensitive to many things despite the popular misconception that we are emotionless. This is not to say however that some people are not less empathetic or passionate as everyone from each and every group will be different but as a rule we are generally very emotionally sensitive. To add onto my statement about how autistic individuals have obvious body language nonverbal autistic individuals would especially need to use their bodies more so to communicate given the fact that it would be their best way of communicating and it has really helped me offer support to autistic people around me when needed. I hope this is enough of an explanation in supporting the other individuals argument about how Greta’s speech was not her own.

I think it is good to remind each other about how this whole movement once started and follow Greta on her mission to not save the planet, but to try to change people's opinion. To keep doing that and pick up the conversation about it, I would like to ask people that are watching this video even 3, 4 or 5 years after it has been published, what you guys think could be done to make the change possible and what has been done that really improved our situation? Alberto Scatto but only if you eat local produce - eating exotic fruits and vegetables that have to be transported across the world in refrigerated containers is also damaging - so tell me, how sustainable is a vegan lifestyle when you have to live off of locally grown foods? Meat is not a problem, it’s eating too much of it that is. If we reduced our meat intake to 10 or 20% of what it is, we and the planet would be healthier.

@@myawilliams4549 well obv not blaming all of it on the cows when there are a lot of other factors that contribute much more to the environment. We have used livestock for thousands of years, but it was after the industrial revolution that climate change became a thing. Fossil fuel, airplanes, plastic waste, polluting the sea, cutting down rainforests, Rich companies buying patents for alternative fuel or environmental power production then shutting them down. And. Much more That is the real problems, not blaming it on the cows and think that just because you stop eating meat, the world will be saved. You yourself need to do what Greta does, talk. Call your politians, discuss this at work, attend rallies, pressure the ones in power. That is what YOU need to do for your children. Because they shouldn't have to do what Greta does today.

small things we can do to save our planet: 1. use metal straws 2. switch to renewable energy 3. stop buying plastic bottles/bags. buy renewable ones that can be used many times. take reusable cups to coffee shops 4. go vegan, even if it's just a few specific days in the week, (this might sound weird but it actually does help) 5. save electricity. do not leave your phone charging overnight. remove plugs from sockets that wont be used overnight 6. save water (shorter showers) 7. take public transport/ walk/ go biking/ car shares 8. dont waste food. start a compost bin. (this can help reduce landfill + give u healthy soil!!) 9. try growing your own fruits & veggies or go to the farmer's market ! 10. plant a tree 11. switch your google browser to ecosia, which is a type browser that plants trees for every search! 12. USE YOUR VOICE... this was another person's idea and i literally just copy pasted most of these. it doesn't really matter at this point who started this comment when our planet is dYiNg. if you can, please use your voice to influence others.

Okay you clearly don't think about consequences, im on vacation now so im just going to talk about number 1. So for metal straws to be effective we need the majority of fast food restaurants (straw using companies) to use them, therefore they have to be transported from the producer with a truck (probably using fossil fuel). That's not the only thing. I live in Sweden, 14 years old. I went to Gothenburg (liseberg) and the've started with paper straws. Now since the straws has to be clean and contain no bacteria it WAS wrapped in plastic, and if we start to use metal straws they would likely be wrapped too. You see only because an idea sounds good in this case "reusage" dosen't necessary means it comes with no complications. I didn't even mention the metal production that will have to be assigned for this idea to work I DON'T deny climate change but im quite sure that an impulsive metal straw exchange would bring more problems than solutions. Thanks for taking your time to read!

@@Nick-kw9oz 3. What about drinkable tap water? Normal in the EU. And glass or metal bottles. Or even reusing that one plastic bottle that you already have. We don't need drinks in plastic containers at all. Not for survival. Why don't you all stop bickering around and do what you can and stop criticising people who are actually trying to spread smaller or bigger solutions? Just do your part and inform yourself and support others who are trying to live more sustainably. It's not about who knows the best solutions and has thought the most about all possible complications, it's about action as Greta said.

@@Nick-kw9oz if u refuse to use straws, then u dont have to use it altogether. it's that simple. im not forcing anyone to use straws when they really dont feel the need to. and i know switching to renewable energy is hard but raising awareness on doing so might increase the chances of it actually happening. all im doing is suggesting is a few simple ways to try to live sustainably, but if you really dont want to help even just a bit, then you dont have to. some of do us actually care about the environment and try to live a sustainable life.
