Hello. I will tell you some school stories. I had a second shift in the 3rd class. I went to dance classes right after school. I racked my brain over my homework after dance classes. I pulled all-night. A few days ago we wrote a Math test. When we wrote the test I drew a blank. I bomb the test and had a bad mark. I like Literature very much. One day our teacher told us to learn a poem by heart. And I forgot to do it at home. But for me learn poems with flying colours. And I had 10. That were my school stories, which were the most interesting for me. Bye!

I used to hit books when I was in primary school and I passed all exams with flying colours. When I liked the teacher, I learned the topics from my heart. I remember when I was a teenager I read additional books at night, I liked to be like the great scientist who have burned the midnight oil. In the last years of high school, my results went bad I flunk test after test. Only when I went to university I experienced a "pull an all-nighter" day before the exam all of my colleagues came to my dormitory room and we put our heads together because we didn't like to bomb tomorrow test so burning candles on both ends was one of my bad habits. In addition, I was one of the student union members so I cut almost many of my classes to play hooky. when I was at university ace a test was a far dream for me.

Hi Jen, an awfully attractive assortment of idioms. I´m sorry to say that I am not familiar with them except with one that I learn, long ago when I just started to learn English: "learning something by heart, aprender de memoria". I remember when I was a boy, leaning by heart the solutions of multiply numbers for example, in those day there were no calculators, and also learning by heart the use of verbs in English by hitting grammar books as much as possible. Now I burn the midnight oil some times by listening to CBC news: World Report, Podcasts and others, which is an awesome way to learn more and better understand to native speakers. Thanks for your great lesson👏🏼. Enjoy a nice week🍁🌷

Hi Santiago 🇪🇸 ☀️. Thanks for your nice comment 💐. I am glad this lesson was able to help you learn some new idioms and review one that you knew from before 🤗. To learn something by heart is a good idiom for the situation you described of memorizing the multiplication table as a kid. I remember getting annoyed at my teaching asking why we had to learn it when everyone had calculators. His response was that we won't always have a calculator with us... little did he know that literally everyone would constantly have a calculator with them almost all the time on their cellphones 😅. It is nice to hear that sometimes even now you burn the midnight oil to brush up on your English listening skills 👍🏻.

Good morning Jen, well I always try my best but I never thought about my habits since I was forced to change them because of the computer but I usually hit the books when I studied especially when I have tests so when I study I usually hit the books and wrap my brains because I want to be able to have a future one day and it doesn’t really matter to me which grades I get because I’m not so obsessed with getting good grades but I want to have a good future so obviously I’m always hitting the books! When I draw blanks are usually ask my parents if they can help me or my friends! At the moment studying is pretty difficult because of my computers because it’s broken and I’m really not able to solve the problems! Yesterday while I was studying it started evil laughing and I don’t know why! My parents joke that it could be possessed but as I told you I do not believe in paranormal stuff! Obviously it’s hard because right now it keeps singing creepy songs in a language I don’t know! It’s not what it’s things that it’s so creepy! If it’s voice because it’s things in a very strange way and it’s just scares me sometimes but my parents and I are fighting so hard to fix it! So if you know someone who is an expert in Apple please let them know what’s wrong with my PC because I really don’t know what to do! VoiceOver doesn’t work properly And the problem is that basically there are strange voices in voiceover which are often used for comedy or at least that’s what the Apple support said that basically activate them selves automatically without me doing anything and it also creates files automatically! Files I have never created and it start copying them and since these files keep duplicating it’s basically impossible to work so please ask someone if you know them because if you know someone who is an expert in Apple maybe they can help me! Explain what’s wrong to them! Unfortunately I cannot play it for you! If I could I would but there is no chance to do it so I can just write it to you but it basically has strange voices activating in themselves automatically! That’s all that’s going on and it’s really strange! It’s been going on for months now and the problem goes away and then comes right back again! School will start 15 September and I’m very worried because I don’t know if I will be able to read or write! If you know anyone please ask them! Thank you so much and thanks for helping me with my English and always being so kind to me! I hope you will visit my country soon because I want to meet you! I don’t know if you wish to meet me as well but I wish to meet you!

Hello Lara. Sorry to hear about all the difficulties you've been having with your computer. If you make an appointment and take it to a Genius Bar at an Apple store, they should be able to actually look at it and solve the problem for you. Whenever I've had a problem with my MacBook or iPhone that can't be solved on the phone with Apple support, physically going into the store with the item to get it looked at has always helped to solve the problem. I am not sure how the COVID situation in Italy is these days, but hopefully you can take your computer to an Apple store for tech support. Anyways, I hope your computer will stop making strange sounds soon and work properly. I also wish you all the best as you begin the new school year in a few days.

I've honestly never thought that anyone would be that interested in learning about me personally 😅. In addition to delicious Japanese food, and a slightly nerdy love of video games and anime, I got really into Japanese culture through theatre. I did a double major in university and studied both English and Theatre. In one of my theatre classes I learned a bit about Kabuki, Bunraku, and Noh. From then I fell even more in love with Japanese culture and decided to move to Japan to teach English after graduating university. Once in Japan I kept learning more about the amazing culture and people. Are you into Japanese culture? Have you been to Japan? ☀️

Hi David 😎. Thanks for creating so many great sentences using the school idioms from this lesson 👍🏻. Allow me to make a few changes to some of your sentences to fix a couple of small grammar point which I hope you'll find helpful: I drew a blank on whom I met. I drew a blank as to what movie I watched. I drew a blank about what I ate. I drew a blank on what I said. I drew a blank as to what I took. I drew a blank about what I got. (Usually in English when we use the idiom "draw a blank" we either use it by itself. It is also possible add 'on' 'as to' or 'about' before the object.) I've been racking my brain as to where I put my keys. I've been racking my brain over where I kept the file (In English when we use the idiom "rack my brain" we can use it by itself, or if there's an object we add 'over' or 'as to') I burned the midnight oil to fix the issue. (Here you needed an infinitive or purpose, not a gerund) If you burn the candles at both ends, you may fall sick. (This is an example of a conditional sentence which you can learn more about in this lesson: kzread.info/dash/bejne/iqauxrOBhKqceKg.html ) I got selected for the project and I passed with flying colours. (Don't forget to use a preposition.) The rest of your sentences were perfect 👍. Thank you for sharing ✨.

Hi JeN !Good morning from Japan☀. You often talk about your aunt. She must be a ray of sunshine for you and you must be the apple of her eye🍎! Let me describe my study habits using idioms from today's lesson. I usually hit the books for about three hours a day.As I'm over the hill,I have no physical strength to pull an all-nighter and burn the midnight oil. However,my curiosity about learning English is limitless. I really have to turn it up a notch in learning English. Thanks to you,I think I have become able to write the things I want to in English to some extent.I'd like to expand the extent of my knowledge about English.I know it’s impossible for me to become fluent in speaking English like a native speaker. However,I want to be more than a run-of-the-mill speaker of English as a Japanese. I'll keep on learning English like an insatiable birdie.I hope you wouldn't mind if I pick your brain about English. By the way,‘ Quiz of the Day ’ A:My boyfriend is a big fan of Arnold Schwarzenegger. He wants to become well-built,so he has been going to the gym almost every day. B:It sounds good for his health. A:Probably ,but after the exercises,he always goes for a drink. B:Aha,maybe he wants to get ( ) . 💡Hint👇 The word has six letters, begins with the letter ‘ r ’ and ends with the letter ‘ d ’ . Hi Ikuo 😎 Thanks for another nice comment and quiz 😁. I like your use of two idioms when you said, "She must be a ray of sunshine for you and you must be the apple of her eye." 👍🏻 I never realized that I talked about my aunt so much. My aunt was the most important person in my life. Her and I were always very close and she was like a mother and best friend to me. I even lived with her during jr high and high school, and visited every second weekend and summers during university. Sadly, my aunt passed away a few years ago, but I still think about her every day and miss her dearly. She was one of the kindest and most encouraging people I've ever known. She had a great sense of humour and always gave good advice. I have many fond memories with her and often when I am filming a lesson and trying to come up with an example, my time with her comes to mind ❤️. Sorry for that long paragraph about my aunt. Since you often share many great things with me, I thought you wouldn't mind if I shared a bit with you about such an amazing woman. ✨ Anyways, let me say that I am extremely impressed that you hit the books for 3 hours every day! That is real dedication to studying English 🤩. Your English writing skills are excellent and I am so happy to read your comments on each video I create. If you are able to speak English even half as well as you write it, I believe you've already reached your goal 😉💪. I hardly ever notice any mistakes in your writing and it is rich with idioms and other great English expressions 👍🏻. Your quizzes are also great fun. To answer the riddle in your comment hear on the school idioms lesson, I believe the answer is ripped 😆. This quiz was especially good and humorous because of the double meaning of the word ripped 😊. Thanks for sharing 🤗. Take care 🌸.

I used to burn the 🕯️ candle from both sides and pass the all nighter but unfortunately it happened only one time to me in my entire life to totally bomb the all tests in the first year of the university but not because I cut classes and played hooky but because of unbelievable matters which still happening to me since then and before then until now but I'm trying to keep steadfast thought.

Hi Rafiq 🤗. I hope that everything is going well with you. Burning the candle at both ends and pulling all nighters are really not good for your health, so it's good to hear that you don't do that anymore. Sleeping at night is good 😴😁. Sorry to hear about the difficulties you faced during your first year of university. I think many university students struggle during their first year. Anyways, I hope you'll keep going and thinking positively 🤗.

Hi Suhag 😁. The following sentences that you wrote are all excellent examples of using the present continuous in the passive voice 👍🏻: "Food is being cooked for everyone. Everything is being prepared. I'm being taught everything. The man is being insulted, we should protest. He is being tortured." Your other sentence is in the active voice and should use an infinitive instead of a gerund: "My aim is to be a good boy." I hope that helps🤗. I also hope the school idioms from this lesson will be helpful for you, too 😉.

Thanks for the feedback, Bryan✨. However, both 'rack' and 'wrack' are accepted spellings of the word and many dictionaries actually recommend 'rack'. Here is a link to an article about it if you're interested in reading more: www.merriam-webster.com/words-at-play/rack-vs-wrack 🤗
