Thom , that's because today's standards wrap these glory boys up in cotton wool. It wasnt much better back then either. Half the tackles result in minimal contact yet they choose to dive and cheat.

Scholes managed to avoid so many red cards for one reason and one reason only, he always put his hand up and apologized after a bad tackle, never started pointing fingers or getting rowdy.

  • @S-Nova0

Also just the fact that his tackles were never "dirty". He consistently considered his bad timing a part of the game, he was never out to injure anybody, never went in studs up, never bit anybody, never spat on anyone. His tackles were strictly within the confines of your average football match, which is why he only ever received 4 red cards in 20 years.

Laughable, I love Scholesy, always have....but he knew how to tackle and he knew EXACTLY what he was doing every time. Keano said it about him, so did others, and He said it himself. His timing was perfect....to nail an opponent who had messed with him. He always made sure to get back at guys who got him earlier. He always made sure to to make it just hard enough and dirty enough and mean enough to get his message across, knowing he'd get yellow, but never ever crossing to red. Scholes - "‘Of course I can tackle. There’s plenty of evidence of me being able to tackle. I was just getting people back. If someone got me early in the game, it was always in the back of my mind that I needed to get them back." He was an awesome and diabolical little f*cker.

And he's not really that bad at tackling, but there are moments when you wonder if he ever believed he would get the ball. At least he was real about it and didn't complain, he was too smart for that. He knew he was wrong.

He went in to get the ball but he was gonna take him out regardless... he just forgot to get the ball once he went down. Seriously, if you ever watch Scholes tackle and compare him to someone who was actually good at tackling, like Fabio Cannavaro, you'll see his timing was always just a little off. He might've won a few here and there, but he would always get a piece of the player. May or may not been intentional, but it shows that his upbringing was as a Centre Forward and not a hard nosed midfielder a la Keane or Lampard.

Vegeta696969 I think Tom Wilson was replying to Tom Reyno, not to you. In reply to your comment though, do you really think Scholes purposely tried to convince everyone he couldn't tackle? Sounds kinda weird and far-fetched to me. My guess is that he was a 'playing' midfielder, who, like others of his kind (Iniesta, Pirlo, Sneijder), just wasn't a great tackler.

Rattenhoofd Personally I think he probably could tackle very well but he preferred to leave a mark. Players like you mentioned didnt have half the malice or damage causing potential in their tackles that Scholes did. I definitely think it was at least partially intentional

Despicable how Man United practically ended Reyes' career in those games he played against them. I remember the game where United ended the undefeated run. Should've had 7-9 red cards, Phil and Gary Neville 5 of them combined alone. No one was suspended, and instead Rooney dived and got a penalty. Most pathetic game I have ever seen. Only suspension United got was on van Nistelrooy who after the game admitted he stomped on Coles foot intentionally to hurt him.

  • @dave790

Come on mate grow up. 7-9 red cards? Please. He got a kicking from the Neville brothers but it was rough justice on a player who went down far too easily anyway. That's the Premier League and English football. You could argue maybe one potential red in that game but that's it at most. Typical Arsenal, no backbone; it's only now Wenger seems to realise the power of discipline, pressure and the odd tackle. You lost that game 2-0 don't forget, and United bossed it from start to finish. 49 games though, what a run,
