The most underrated goal in history imo. I wouldnt even mind but usually it’s a tap in after passing like this, but the finish at the end of it was ridiculous. Beautiful is an understatement about this goal

This is easily one of the best goals i have ever seen! Scholes is easily one of the best players to ever play the game! United are easily the greatest club in history!

shows just how good Scholes is. that is exactly how he wanted that ball to go in.

Brilliant goal, Paul Scholes, what more can you say ? He picks it up centre circle and spreads the play out to Yorke, makes his run onto Sheringham's deft flick, and the finish ? My word.

they played it so simply and hit their opponents when they least expected it! now thats what i call beautiful football! glory glory man united!

Without doubt, this is United's closest equivalent of the classic Carlos Alberto goal against Italy in 1970. A training ground goal that just happens to be sumptuously performed by some of the best players in the world. See also Denis Irwin vs Wimbledon in 1994.

19 passes and then the shot, I'm surprised no-one mentions this goal in the same vein as the Brazil 1970 goal or the Argentina goal in the 2006 World Cup vs Serbia

I have watched this goal 1000's of times - I could watch it all day.

Scholes had the short passing of Xavi, the ability to keep the ball like Iniesta, and the long passing range of Pirlo. Absolutely world class and controlled the tempo for United in a non tiki-taka style of play for 15 years.

That looked like so many barca moves, even complete with Messi's trademark lobbed finish at the end. Brilliant goal from Scholes, but the pass to Yorke was lovely as well. THE pass master.

What you don't know is that half of the build up to this goal has been edited out. There's something like fifteen passes before this even started. No idea why the uploader cut it out.

Forget Barca's style. Scholes "10 passes ahead" was a team on its own. That smile from fergie "fergies football babies" running riot on the world stage. Class Of 92 #

That was a good game.Manchester was saved thanks to Barthez many times in the first half.

I wish the current United midfield was half as good as this, the way they played with swag and moved the ball around with such confidence..... miss those days. United these days are dreadful to watch but at least they get the result......

Scholes, the goat of midfielders

that was so awesome. As a utd supporter, i dread the day scholesy retires. No one else like him.

Beautiful passing game,wonderful finish...old good Paul Scholes :) ...and for those who remember,that game was very good. Panathinaikos was standing very well, had many chances until the 60th minute and United...well,it's Manchester United,need to say no more...3-1 final score

at 0:55 even fergie was smiling to himself. thats a sign that he thinks scholes is pure class.

One final point. If you watch Utd against Barça in '09, on the back of being European Champions; it's Pep's first season in charge (so his team wasn't even close to their peak) & Utd were taken apart. This was Utd's best team under Fergie: Ronaldo, Rooney, Tevez, Fletcher, Anderson & Hargreaves at their best; a huge thrashing of Arsenal before & absolutely none of them got close to a Barça side in their infancy. I will always love Utd, but I respect & love the football Barça have played too.

a great team, that midfield is as good as it gets, scholes and keane and beckham and giggs. that team won a lot but should of won more in europe. Only if united had that midfield now.

Regarding the players, Rijkaard had them and didn't create the same intuition. Listen to Puyol's interview if you can understand Spanish where he talks about how Pep first brought his philosophy into the team, and how he would have to leave Barça if he didn't adhere to them. Listen to how when Pep doubted himself, Iniesta just knocked on his door and said: "estamos contigo hasta la muerte" and then just left.

Just FYI, half of the build up to this goal is missing. The passing lasts twice as long, but the video cuts it out for some reason. The full build up is something like thirty passes long and goes on for two minutes.

Show me where Guardiola said that on it's own merit as a reason for not deserving to win the game. That's certainly not a quote. It's become "pointless", in your eyes, because they keep winning. It's always been human nature to hate the one that is winning all the time. Barça have made the game look easy; this is especially evident when they play in the CL. Man Utd looked like Rotherham Utd away at Old Trafford in both finals. This is why Pep is an innovator.

I get your point? And what point is this exactly? People hate winners? Understand the difference from a observant statement of general conception & someones individual viewpoint. I love watching Barça because no other team has played or can play like them. It's beautiful to watch. Watch how they bring the ball out of defence, despite the team being Real or Utd & under high pressure. Then watch how they press; the pitch is split into zones, once a player leaves their zone another fills in.

That's definitely up there with Argentina's 2006 world cup goal, if not better

Ofc, like pressing for example. Barca doesn't play identical as they did before but their play has always been based heavily on short passes and movement since cruyff.

To say it's the players; well players always will contribute to the play, after all, they are the ones on the pitch! But many forget that Messi wasn't the Messi we know today in the first two seasons under Pep. No one was talking about Xavi at all, and Iniesta who? Sergio came from the B side as did Pedro, Piqué was made into a great and Valdes actually became a 'keeper. Possession is 9/10ths & is so important, hence why Barça will beat Utd if they play, as much as this pains me. Pep's a genius.

if scholes was from spain, he wouldnt be considered much better than xavi and iniesta. scholes is so underestimated

@weefeatures i'm sorry, the complete midfielder can tackle as well. that's the only grey area. complete midfielders are gerrard, lampard, parker (this season). even iniesta and xavi aren't COMPLETE midfielders

Cruyff didn't invent total football. Total football was pioneered by Ajax managers Jack Reynolds and his former player Rinus Michels. Ah, you see. Now I love this part. You sumed up everything in a way it should be described about Barca's play. Unlike Celtic, there is a beautiful way to beat Barcelona. Fast and efficient counter attack. Not parking the bus like Chelsea / Celtic. United will never succumb to these tactics. The current United arent able to produce blitzkrieg counter attack to expose Barca. And most importantly, when Keane left, United till now has never found a true and efficient anchorman. Not even Carrick.

@crazyboyxx Agreed. Also sometimes the commentator can add a bit to the goal showing genuine emotion. Martin Tyler/Andy Gray are peerless at it. Peter Drury on the other hand sounds fake. Case in point with this goal. He calls it a lovely goal. My Nan used to describe things like wallpaper as lovely!!!!

You don't define glory hunters by where they come from. Glory hunters are people who only sing when they're winning, who only celebrate the victories, never suffer the defeats. If a guy born in Seoul follows Man U with the same consistency and passion as a Mancunian like me, then I welcome him with open arms. My point is that if you ask Lampard himself, he would probably admit that Scholes has always been better than him. He is the footballer's footballer, the one everyone wants on their team.

sackboy8me I realize that you made the comment five months back, but perhaps you'd like to rethink your opinion? :P We did much better (on a purely aesthetic level) in 14-15 than the season previous. LVG took some time to get going but with guys like Schweinsteiger coming in, his vision is taking shape. Keep faith, my friend. :)

Where did I say you deserve to win with tiki-taka? The team that finishes 90 mins with more goals than the other side deserves to win. Full stop. But if I were the manager, I would have my team play like Barça for sure. I think your missing my original point. Pep Guardiola has redefined the way many of us saw the game and thought the game could be won. It took Mourinho 9 goes before he managed a win with Real, and many consider them the 2nd best side currently.
