Beautiful sketches, I like your use of colour as well. I prefer to muck about making palettes and messy doodles rather than making sketches or anything recognisable that I could ever show anyone. But it's my hobby and I enjoy it.

Many years ago I received this travel paint box with the built-in water tank as a gift. You can also store half pans in the middle (or travel brushes for a quick sketch). In the meantime, the black color on the outside has suffered because the set was always on the road with me, but the box is very stable and still closes properly. What I still love after all these years is the high quality of the Schmincke "Horadam" paints. They are so highly pigmented without the usual binders and therefore the colors are not only brilliant but also very yielding and last a little forever. In the meantime I have put together a studio palette of Horadam tubes but I still take my little travel set with me everywhere. And yes, Paynes gray is also always with me, and not just for the shadows😊

I learned a great deal about mixing colors to create an informal color wheel during this video. I am at the point in my journey where I need to explore and test my palettes more than creating “art”.

There are many restrictions on color and lightness for such a number of paints. The name “retro” is also arbitrary, since some of it also contains new pigments.

The box I bought from Jacksons a week ago (Jan 24) has a different selection of colour. Prussian blue instead of Paynes and no burnt Umber. I'm going to add a half tray of Titanium white. My very slightly larger Jacksons metal box (£12 or something like that…but with two mixing trays) with curated Senellier and Jackson colours is more versatile and it's taking me a while to work with this smaller range of colours in this otherwise delicious little paint box. I would add that the mixing pallete is a bit small and it's quite tricky to fill the built in water tank.

I have six pot sampler, it's always come in handy.

I’m currently waiting for mine to arrive in the post. I love that it doesn’t have that extra flap, just the paints and two deep mixing wells. Perfect for experimenting with a limited palette, both in the studio and when travelling/plein air etc… can’t wait. I think the era was 1912? I bet the Viridian re-wets easier than my other Viridians. I have all those colours but none from Schminke (except tundra violet tube which I’ll be decanting into a half pan and adding to the palette with another three of my other paints…

I have ordered myself the set with the tubes. it’s on the way in the mail. I am so excited for it.

I’ve just received the tin box either the 5ml tubes ❤ their labels are really old looking. It’s like I just got an original 1912 old new box. In that box there’s also half pans above the tubes so you can put some of each tubes in them and still kept those tubes in the box. It is a very beautiful setup. My precious!

Seriously envious. I’ve been lusting after that retro set. I have no need of it as I have empty tins of that type and most of the paint, and the ones I don’t have I would not use, but that doesn’t shut the want monster up!

Really happy to see you doing this paint out. I bought an additional four traditional colours to put in the middle, they came with ordinary wrappers, and I haven’t brought myself to remove the vintage styled labels as yet! I got permanent carmine as a cool red, as I didn’t think a good purple could be made, Paris blue for its intense darkness, olive green yellowish and transparent orange as a warm yellow. I toyed with the idea of gold but I have one in my other bijou box and really it is not difficult to get to! I loved your colour wheel, these small boxes are usually a lot more versatile than they appear at first. I love the pursuit of a few extras though…. But this vintage box is a little delight just as it is.

@@lindyashford7744thank you so much! It is such a gorgeous set, I don’t open the paints for a couple of days because I could by bring myself to either! I think adding a cool red and a dark blue is a great idea, and I have been considering the same, although it is quite a squeeze cramming a pan in the middle… I didn’t want to bend the metal, but I’m sure it would be fine! I plan to film me swatch out a colour chart, and I might add a cool red and dark blue into the mix! I found I could mix a good quin gold type colour with the yellow and the Venetian red, so that’s good! Such a versatile box as you say! Thanks so much for watching and for your comment ❤

It's available at Jacksons...they were advertising them before they arrived, as I was keeping my eyes on it. I think they wanted people to know they were coming and had the awaiting stock note. The small tube set has now sold put but the other sets are all available. I think other stores will get them eventually if I'm understanding the jacksons write up correctly. I think other stores have to wait until the exclusive period is up.

Is the box black or dark grey?
