The quick rewet on Schminke is so good. Even those difficult to get flowing ones like potters pink are a dream right from a dry half-pan.

I’ve slowly built up my watercolor collection in terms of number and quality. My first professional set was W&N, and then Holbein, and then Daniel Smith, then Sennelier, and then Schmincke. I think I have found the paints I love the most and I have also found that there are some paints and colors of some brands I prefer over others. And there are brands I use for when i expressive stuff and then when I need more control. To be honest, I got a 24 pan of Schmincke Akademie and I prefer those over a lot of professional brands I’ve tried and their MILES better than any other student brand I’ve tried. I still reach for it even after having Horadam. If you want a better palette and don’t want to break the bank and want to try Schmincke colors and formulas, get the Akademie first. It’s still expensive, the Schmincke Akademie 24 cost more than my W&N professional 24 pan palette. But it has different qualities and the quality is beyond excellent. And I reach for it now because I don’t get that “too expensive to use” feeling. No one needs to start with these paints. I spent the majority of my time with watercolors HAPPILY using White Nights and Paul Rubens and still do! But once you’re ready and financially ready as well, then I don’t think you can get better than Schmincke in my humble opinion. Sennelier is great for layering and glazing and for clarity. But I prefer Schminke. My second is Daniel Smith. Their colors are incredible and so much fun. They aren’t an old and stuffy brand like the vibes I get from a lot of more expensive watercolor brands. Holbein is another because I prefer control and clarity isn’t usually something I want. But every brand has their strengths and weaknesses and qualities. And each artist has their own needs and wants. There is no BEST watercolor brand, just what works for you. Even with my expensive fancy paints I think I reach for White Nights the most. They’re just my comfort paints. Schmincke is excellent but they’re not the only excellent brand out there. They’re incredibly expensive. They won’t make you a better artist so make sure you’re buying it because you know you want it and not because it’s what the fancy people on Instagram use. ❤

@SwedePotato314 well articulated! The concept of buying a beautiful palette of watercolours and then almost worshipping them because they’re “too good to use” is something I have fallen into on occasion. There is a period, after purchase, when they must just be admired before taking the plunge and wetting for the first time. I agree that expensive paints won’t make anyone a better artist, especially if they never see any paper! 😊

Thanks Kristi' I'm becoming VERY IMPRESSED with Schmincke. I bought one of their "Special Edition" sets of 12 (I made it a xmas gift to myself.) and beginning to really love it. ❤❤❤. Then I bought 2 sampler sets (from an Etsy seller) of their super granulating sets: Deep Sea & Tundra....even more love Schmincke love❤️ ❤ ❤❤. I too, like most wc fans, have a number of other brands/sets, but am still in the learning phase for so much of the wonderful world of watercolor. I think we tend to want to love one brand "the best," and may do that forever or for a long time or our heart may change its allegiance at some point. Schmincke is quickly becoming my love....for now. But love is a fickle thing, so who knows?

You’re wonderful! I bought a small pan set of Schmincke, then I asked for a set of six 5 ml tubes for Christmas, BUT before that I bought a 24 pan set! They are not labeled as PB or PR or PY, just numbers. I love them, and so glad you do, too!

I love Schmincke paints, both their transparent watercolors and their gouaches. Very reliable paints, huge number of color options, and here in Germany they are easy to find at reasonable prices. This brand is definitely a staple and a favorite for me. Oh and because of your color comparisons, I don't know if you know this, but Schmincke does have a genuine cerulean blue, a very lovely one, they just call it cobalt cerulean, that's their PB36. With Schmincke it can sometimes be a bit confusing because they sometimes have several versions of one color, and the naming differs a bit from other brands, so it's easiest to always check the pigment codes.

Hullo Kristy, I am a longtime watercolor painter. I have used a small 12 set of Schminke watercolor paints. I did buy them on sale when my local store was going out of business! I went to replace or refill the half pans and suffered sticker shock! I just did not believe that the quality of the paints was worth the price. Now I can see why people say this is the “best brand” I just don’t feel that way. I have enjoyed painting with DaVinci Paints of California and I know that my paintings will last for many, many years! If I did have unlimited funds or lived in Germany I might use Schminke paints! Yet I have found DaVinci a truly beautiful paint and I love that about all of their products! If spending an excessive amount of money causes you distress and will not make your painting experience fun nor enjoyable find the paint that will! Everyone needs to be able to find a way to create and just be happy! Good luck to All!

Schmincke is my brand i use all the time. And sometimes senelier and qor. I used winsor and newton a few times, i have a small amount, but i never grab them. I have about 60 colors of schmincke, 22 senelier, 6 qor, and 12 Winston's. I started with schmincke and i never changed... i just love them. And everywhere i go, they go too. Yes i hate travelbins and small palets. I just take them all with me. Thats how much i love them...

Love your loose painting style, it really brings out the best in the Schmincke watercolours. They’re my go-to brand, given that they are readily available in Europe. I quite like playing with other brands, too, but I always return to the Schmincke because I’m so used to them that I know exactly what to expect from them.

Ohhh I simply adore granulating watercolors! Especially if it's a multi-pigment formula that separates! I also adore watercolors that "explode" on the paper. So my top picks are Daniel Smith (I love their Primatec line) QoR and Schmincke. I love the vibrancy of Misson Gold but they are not granulating nor have much flow. BTW...that Holbein Opera Pink looks stunning!!!! I may have to give that one a try! TFS

I have the shire super granulating set, and I just today received my 24 pan set. I have just started playing in the paint pond, lol. I love art supplies, expensive, affordable and everything in between. It’s a problem, brahaha. Years ago I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia and started doing adult coloring to distract myself from my pain. Then I started teaching my self to draw, sort of more doodling. Now the last few months I am playing with paint. I also have Holbein, Windsor and Newton, and NicPro watercolors. I forgot about my Daniel Smith 10 pack and QOR 12.

I got the set of 36 to which I added different colors to make 52. The colors are bright and luminous but soft in the European way not flashy like the Korean ones. I find however the texture too buttery, the flaw of this quality is that the pans melt faster than any other brand I have and I have several. Also the half pans compared to other brands look shallower and the plastic is very thick, so I would recommend the tubes although they evaporate a lot. For this reason, I use them very little, especially not for exercises. I really like their Granulated line.

Thanks for the review. Iovr how varied and excellent these paints are. They are my go to paints. I am slowly collecting all their single pigment colours, so I can make all my mixes without creating mud. Schmincke offers detailed colour charts on their website, both of their student grade (Akademie) and artist grade (Horadam), with the numbers on the pans and the pigment info. Since I have so many of their single pigment colours I decided not to buy the super granulating ones, rather mix them myself. The only exceptions were the volcano red and volcano yellow, which are single pigments and are not present in their regular collection. They have been making paints for 130 years, and it shows in their consistency. Good to see the comparisons. Dr Otro Kano's You Tube channel is a great source for detailed swatching testing and pigment info.

I love your brands side-by-side comparisons! May I recommend to you a person ( Alice Lim on YT) who uses Schminke code numbers and mixes them to get granulateds, etc? She does color wheels in the process and is clear even though technical. I thought of investing in the bigger tubes and doing the same. It is really helpful to look at her info for the technical end of how it all works and even make your own concept paints from them. I have DS and I enjoyed seeing the granulating effect in your comparisons.

Schmincke Horadam were my first watercolours when I started five years ago. I've tried other brands meanwhile, but Horadam are still my go-to, probably because I know how they "behave". I'm also a fan of granulating colours as well as transparent ones. (That's why I would never buy "pastel" watercolours at all, I just add more water.) In contrast to your style I prefer full pans to half pans, and I like working with limited palettes and a lot of mixing in a piece. I admire your painting style anyway. :-D

I am in the middle of a love affair with the new to me super granulating sets of the 5ML tubes like haze and tundra etc. and now it’s very hard to find any Volcano so I went and got the half pans separately from separate suppliers and I now have a set of five of the volcano. I can’t seem to keep up with the special additions to pop up out of nowhere because I find one and then I go back to find it and it’s like it never existed. So I have put together a large pallet of 48/2 pans, for me 48 is large, of the five tube sets of super granulating colors that I have. I haven’t messed around with them yet but I kind of dream about them all the time.

Hi Kristy, I have a question. I received the Volcano set of the super granulating schminke and to my disappointment, the yellow had separated into a greasy like substance, followed by the paint. I was using it to fill a palette so it could dry, and I’ve now got a dried well of it. It is the most disappointing color to work with. It just looks, meh. I’m worried that I’ve ruined it. Can you do a video where you talk about paints separating in the tubes? How do we handle this? Even mixing the paint in the well/pan before it dried was moot because there was such much of the binder (gum Arabic?) that it just sort of … congealed. I’d love some advice! Especially what to do with the rest of the tube. Is it still any good?

If you work from tube paint, you may want to add drop or 2 of glycerine to each well as you squeeze the tube paint in (and mix). Otherwise WN (tube) doesn’t rewet as well. I use mostly DS and m Graham because they rewet super easily.

I got my first set of professional watercolor paints from Schmincke this past Christmas. It’s the 12 half pan box but it has space for 12 more. Before it I had been using the Viviva Colorsheets that after three years of painting still go around with me in my pencil pouch. So, the jump from dye-based to pigment-based watercolor was a big shift for me. Schmincke is really nice, with tons of pigment loaded into them and they mix and mingle nicely. I still have a long way to go in regards of my skills because I’m having a hard time making really light colors (like a sky blue or a lilac) and I get a lot of hard edges when layering, but I think it has more to do with me being a newbie than the paints themselves. I love that you can buy the half-pans since it’s a great way to try out new colors without breaking the bank. Overall I’ve been using them for five months and I’m enjoying them very much. :)

I’ll tell you what, it may not be your skills as much as you think. Dye based pigment and Schmincke share one thing…they both produce hard edges more easily, at least in my experience. I do love the wildness of Schmincke but for clean, smooth washes? Grab a few pans of Holbein or Mission Gold

Their boxes are a bit different to the Meeden boxes, especially their limited editions. However people often complain about their sharp edges, especially regarding the largest and smallest sets. Oddly enough all the 24 half pan sets always have rolled edges. They sometimes offer them as special editions with very pretty colourful lids. They come out with new designs every year. Some people adore their square boxes (also limited editions, and not always available). Have a look at Jackson’s webpage, you may like some of them. I personally don’t mind the sharp edges, and frankly wouldn’t even have noticed them because I didn’t know any others when I started painting ages ago.
