I hated the swatch card too! I almost set my pallette aside (even thought about selling it) because I hated the paints when I swatched them. A few days later, I swatched the paint on arches paper and fell in love with them. Crazy how much paper affects the performance of the paint.

Yes!! Paper choice is so important! It's crazy the difference it can make!!

You can't go wrong with Schmincke. Every brand has certain characteristics...some more opaque and some more transparent and all things in -between. I really like that Chromium Yellow Deep? And I love their Sepia and May Green is a big fave! And of course, their super granulating are fantastic!

Oh my gosh, you do watercolors way differently than I do. I start with big loose wet washes all over the piece using big brushes, basically establishing my lights and darks and blocking in, then work my way into details using smaller (ish) brushes by layering or glazing and drying between each pass, then finally go into details using even smaller brushes. It's not right or wrong, just different than how I do it. And yes! I'd love to see a limited palette piece with the discarded paints. That would be fun.

Lol, yeah, I tend to work with watercolors the way I do with other paints and pencils; section by section. Depends on the piece though, if I am going for a more painterly look, I am more likely to work with sweaping washes, but for something this detailed, I go little by little. I still layer and glaze a lot and go in with details and tighten things up after, but I don't do the whole piece at once. That's the neat thing about any art supply; different artists will find different ways of working. 🥰 I will definitely have to do a limited color palette with the extra paints soon, I really love those colors together!

@@CautionArtistatPlay Yes - I was fascinated by your brushwork! You hold the brush a lot like it's a marker. I was trained away from that, but now want to experiment to see what I can do! In general, if I'd only seen you working on the painting and not the Schminke intro, I would have assumed you were working in gouache. Again, something I haven't tried but am now wanting to try. It's intriguing to work in so much detail on the first pass. I'll have to sketch greater detail to begin with, I guess.

I’ve used schminck watercolors for a few years now. They are smooth with very little granulation. Even in their ultramarine blue. However, they are not something I reach for when I’m looking for a pow 💥 of color.

I love Schmincke paints, and you created a wonderful piece with them!! One of my favourite colours is Helio Turquoise so I shivered a bit when you took it out 😂 it‘s my cool blue in a limited palette. I usually squeeze 13 pans into a row so they don’t rattle that much. I recently got May green and I already have Vulcano yellow, so I will try your mix, it sounds perfect for light or faded petals!

*my own palette is still under construction/assembly and consists mostly (so far) of Daniel smith tubes, a few Van Gogh shades and one of the schimincke horadam super granulating tundra orange tubes (which is amazing)...some kuretake gansai-tambi pans (graphite) which i'm slowly adding other shades augment the potential shading properties...i do have som derwent inktense and graphitints pencils and one small set of graphitint half pans as well that get a lot of use in my collage distressing techniques...also make use of brusho pigment crystals even if they are not archival...i also have a work around for that by also using Rit fabric dye crystals as well...interesting effects can result...i also have a LOT of fountain pen inks both bottles (of which there a about thirty) and well over 100 ink samples that have lasted for ages* *since i only use a drop or two of any of them at a time for shading or adding to other pigments or layers...as you well know professional art supplies and materials get expensive very quickly so deciding on what to add to your art kit and eating can be a tricky especially if you happen to be OCD*

Professional supplies do add up quickly, that's for sure. It sounds like you have a pretty good collection going! I have too many supplies at this point. As far as watercolors go, I have a couple sets of QoR, an M. Graham palette that I put together myself, a Holbein palette that I also built, a Van Gogh Palette, a set of Kuretake gansai-tambi (which I still need to try.) And then some random tubes of other brands, like a couple of Daniel Smith. And now these, lol. It's out of control, but I enjoy exploring the various brands. I also have some watercolor inks, brush pens, watercolor pencils, etc. You know me, I like trying anything I can get my hands on. But I have been more focused on archival art supplies lately because if I sell my work, I want it to be archival, and when things sell, I'm able to make my money back. So one hand feeds the other there, lol. I have been having fun exploring my less archival supplies in my sketchbook, though, and offer prints if I come up with something I like.

@@CautionArtistatPlay *i do have many of the Qor watercolors, i've had a lot of fun adding a hint of the gold pigment into the darker cobalt blue or turquoise shades when i have the chance to paint uninterrupted...it's subtle but when the light hits it at the right angle it looks very nice...* *i've been looking at the Super Vision watercolor paints as well...some interesting shade variants there. with multi-pigment mixtures..don't think many are archival and the reviews are mixed...still a few might be worth exploration in the future*

Hi Shana! First of all, wow! I love it so much!!! Beautiful artwork! You can do what ever you want with this medium!!! Very versatile! I love watercolors too, but I didn't try this Schmincke watercolors, they're very quality watercolors. But for me, I got my own preference, I love my St. Petesburg Watercolors, Winsor & Newton, and Daniel Smith! They're my favorite watercolors. And I see something...I don't know how I say it... something different in how you apply the watercolor. Watercolors is a fascinating medium, and interesting, but you need a lot of water. Not in the whole process, but at the beginning. And it's strange how you do it, I know that each Artist makes their artworks differently, there is freedom in that, I understand and I respect that! but this process you did, makes me feel curious and at the same time surprised! I loved your work, but, in this process of watercolors, you should always add a little more water. I know, you like to control it, but sometimes watercolor has its own personality. It's just a tiny advice, but, in the end, you can work the watercolors as you want, in the case of the Watercolorists, some of them, work with a lot of water and with layers. But I love your flowers a lot! beautiful! 🥰❤️

Thank you, Claritza! I think it's hard to tell because it's so sped up, but in the first layers, I do add quite a bit of water, and I also wet the paper. These got saturated very quickly, though, so I think that's one reason it looks that way. It probably also looks different because I work section by section instead of working on the whole thing at once. It may also have something to do with the way the paper absorbs things. But I do add quite a bit of water and work in transparent layers. They just seemed to build up really quickly for me in this one. But, as you said, everyone has their own way of working. I don't think it really matters as long as you enjoy the process and come up with a piece you are proud of. I haven't tried the Winsor & Newton watercolors but have heard good things. I have a few Daniel Smith, and they are lovely!

And I think what you say is true because I didn't see when you added water at the beginning 😳😅, and also that you do it in parts which is different, but at the same time is an interesting technique! Winsor & Newton watercolors are translucent and opaque, they have good pigment. I like them. And I like to try the Super Vision watercolors...Have you heard about them? They look opaque... they're beautiful colors!!!, but, I don't know if this watercolors have lightfast...

Yeah, it can be hard to see all the details when the video is sped up. I did the first layers on each petal wet into wet and a few subsequent layers wet into dry. I actually had to add quite a bit of water in order to do the scraping technique in the veins of the leaves/petals because that technique doesn't work unless the paper is wet and the paint is watery. I also did a lot of glazing with thin layers of paint. I varied my techniques throughout, and layering was key. Some of these colors had a ton of payout, though. I also had two cups of water off-screen (one for dirty water, one for clean) and sprayed my palette often. It's hard to capture everything, so I can see how it may have looked that way. Anyway, that's just a bit more about my process, lol. I think you are the second person to mention the Super Vision watercolors in these comments! I believe Scott mentioned wanting to try them, too! I'm not very familiar with them, I will have to check them out!! Now I'm intrigued!

Why not just put the extra pans, sideways in the center, so you can have them all? I just ordered this pallet, it arrives today. I also have the shire set, Iam going to put the shire set in half pans in the center. The shire set is granulating too. I am going to get the blue set and forest set too. I have some empty tins and pans that I bought already to make my own pallets.

I actually did end up doing that, and that's how I have them stored so I can keep them all together. I have a few other colors that I have my eye on, too, so eventually, I may end up moving them all to a bigger palette. Their granulating colors are so beautiful so I will probably end up with more of those soon.

Wow, you have such patience to work in such a concentrated way! I wonder how long that took? My first love is WN, however I bought a large whole pan schmincke set a few months ago, and am dabbling on and off with them, open to falling in love. Some observations: * they're less intense in hue, but this is good for layering, and won't create mud as easily * they have a better flow than WN, but this comes at the cost of subtle tonal gradation * they're so sensual and buttery! so the experience of painting with them is delicious.

Thank you! I don't remember now how long this one took. Definitely took longer than some of my other watercolor pieces, but probably less time than some of my colored pencil work! Lol Thank you for your insight on these paints and for the comparison to the WN. You know, come to think of it, I haven't tried the WN watercolors yet! Do you use their Cotman line or their prodessional line? I have heard good things about both!

I would love to have 24 Schmincke colors! I've got 6 5ml tubes from a set on Amazon: Turners yellow, quin gold, french ultramarine (the granulating one,) perylene green, potters Pink (love!,) and cobalt violet. I love them all. But since you've got a brand new set I'm wondering if you can answer a question: is the tin box as flimsy as I've heard? Any sharp edges?

Honestly, I was not overly impressed with the tin. The pans fall out reeally easily, and it's kind of clanky. Some of the metal pieces that hold the pans in have sharp corners on them. But I wasn't sure if it was a fluke or not, so I didn't think to mention it in the video. I have a Meehan palette that I bought from Amazon that I keep my Holbein watercolors in and haven't noticed the same issues with that.

I have a love hate relationship with Schmincke. I find they dry dull. Some colours in the brand are lovely and I love their special limited editions, shire being my favourite. However I find they are a bit powdery looking. I prefer Sennelier for Botanicals and Some reds and Blues in Schmincke.

Thanks for sharing your experience with us! I really enjoyed the reds in this, so I can see what you mean there! I still need to work with them more to get a complete feel for things, though. I hear wonderful things about the Sennelier watercolors! I have a very small sample sized palette of the sennelier that I still need to try.

They look like candy because they use a candy wrapping machine to wrap their pans. :)

And the red flower was dull! And for all that money on zenart paper those flowers should have jumped off that page and it proves once again that their colors are just not as bright and lush as all the other brands. If you're a holbein user then I know you'll understand the 2 brands are worlds apart when it comes to which brand will pop more. I love vibrancy and that's just not the brand. They're weaker than winsor and newton but at least with them when u buy 24 colors you get a magenta and a purple and a sap green for half of the cost. I prefer many student grade sets over schminke such as pretty excellent $17 or van gogh botanical set was $40 or even my $10 set of Giorgione 48 colors are brighter and richer. People say that sennelier isn't great but it's one of my favorites as is mission gold, or roman szmal. But to each they're own that's why there's so many brands. And u probably were sent the stuff for free or it's patreon supported. I love your artwork is truthfully why I watched the video plus when I saw the cobalt turquoise in the set I was curious where u found the set because I had tried 3 different palettes and they were just such poor color choices and weak pigments every time that I sold them after they sat for 6 months collecting dust.

Yeah, Holbein is my go-to watercolor, and they are definitely more vibrant! I do wish these colors were a bit more pure, but overall, I didn't have a bad experience with them. I had heard so much praise about them online, which is why I got them. I also enjoy M. Graham watercolors and I have some of the Van Gogh, and they are pretty good! I have a mini set of the Sennelier but haven't tried them yet. I bought the Schmincke with giftcards that I got for Christmas from family and friends, and maybe a bit of adsense money. I don't have a Patreon yet (though I'm working on it). If I ever get something for free, I state it explicitly in the video. I also would never pretend to like something if I didn't, whether it was free or not, lol. I'm sorry that you had such a poor experience with these paints! These aren't my favorite, but I did have fun with them. Thank you for watching and for your insight, I like to hear from other artists about what products they are into!

I'm not a fan of schminke because it is upsetting to me that the minimum you can buy one of their palettes for is no less than $100 and the colors they include in their sets under 24 are garbage choices that are impossible to get bright colors with because no Magento and no diox purple and there's never a way to mix anything bright. It's sick to spend $200 on a palette of 24 and you had 5 yellows and you had to buy 5 additional colors make a workable palette for painting flowers. however I love zenart paper myself. I can't believe that I never hear my group recommend that paper which is very surprising.

Yeah, it all really comes down to personal preference and how you like to work. I was expecting a few of these colors to be brighter too. The Zenart paper is fantastic! I'm also surprised I don't hear it talked about very often.
