Schloss Eggenberg - Graz - Steiermark - Austria
1460 bis 1463 kaufte Balthasar Eggenberger den Orthof auf den Algersdorfer Feldern. Dieser erhielt den Namen der Familie.
Alle vier Ecken des Schlosses sind turmartig, um eineinhalb Stockwerke als das übrige Gebäude erhöht. Jeder dieser vier Türme ist in eine der vier Himmelsrichtungen ausgerichtet. Die Zahl 4 steht für die vier Jahreszeiten und die vier Elemente. Der Innenhof ist an drei Seiten von dreigeschoßigen Pfeilerarkaden umgeben.
Das Schloss besitzt 365 Außenfenster, für jeden Tag eines Jahres. Im zweiten Stock, der Beletage, befinden sich 52 Außenfenster, für jede Woche eines Jahres. Jedes Stockwerk im Haus besitzt 31 Räume für die maximale Anzahl der Tage eines Monats. Im zweiten Obergeschoß sind außen ringförmig 24 Prunkräume angeordnet, die die Stunden eines Tages symbolisieren. Der gesamte Bau ist symmetrisch angelegt. Dadurch ergeben sich im zweiten Obergeschoß zwei gleich große Hälften, zu denen je 12 Räume zählen, die für die Stunden von Tages- und Nachthälfte stehen.
Johann Leopold Graf Herberstein Gemahl der letzten Eggenberger Prinzessin gab eine Erneuerung der Anlage in Auftrag. 1754 bis 1762 begann eine große Ausstattungsphase, ganz im Geschmack des Rokoko.
Im 1900 Jahrhundert begann eine vollständigen Umgestaltung des barocken Formalgartens in einen romantischen Landschaftsgarten im englischen Stil.
Bis 1939 blieb die gesamte Anlage im Besitz der Familie Herberstein. Kurz vor dem Krieg wurde Schloss und Park vom Land Steiermark erworben. Nach Beschädigungen in der Kriegs- und Besatzungszeit wurde das Schloss dem damaligen Landesmuseum Joanneum eingegliedert und 1953 nach Restaurierungsarbeiten dem Publikum geöffnet.
Die Parkanlage umfasst 17,9 ha. Alle Besitzer und Bauherren haben das Schloss und den umgebenden Garten immer als gleichbedeutendes Element betrachtet.
Zu Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts schwand das Interesse am Garten, und der Eggenberger Schlosspark verfügte über keinen Gärtner mehr. Dies hatte zur Folge, dass die einzelnen Bestandteile des Gartens abgerissen wurden, im Laufe der Jahrzehnte immer mehr verwilderten.
Der Schlosspark Eggenberg gehört zu den bedeutendsten gartenarchitektonischen Denkmalen Österreichs und steht unter Denkmalschutz. 1993 wurde in Zusammenarbeit mit dem Bundesdenkmalamt ein Gartenpflegewerk in Auftrag gegeben, dessen Zielsetzung die Rekonstruktion und Erhaltung des Gartens als Kulturdenkmal der Romantik sein sollte.
1460 to 1463 Balthasar Eggenberger bought the Orthof on the Algersdorfer fields. This was given the family name.
All four corners of the castle are tower-like, one and a half stories higher than the rest of the building. Each of these four towers faces one of the four cardinal points. The number 4 represents the four seasons and the four elements. The inner courtyard is surrounded on three sides by three-story pillar arcades.
The castle has 365 exterior windows, for every day of the year. On the second floor, the Beletage, there are 52 exterior windows for each week of the year. Each floor in the house has 31 rooms for the maximum number of days in a month. On the second floor, 24 state rooms are arranged in a ring, symbolizing the hours of a day. The entire building is symmetrical. This results in two halves of the same size on the second floor, each with 12 rooms that stand for the hours of the day and night.
Johann Leopold Graf Herberstein, husband of the last Eggenberg princess, commissioned a renovation of the complex. From 1754 to 1762 a major phase of furnishing began, entirely in the style of the Rococo.
In the 1900s a complete transformation of the baroque formal garden into a romantic English-style landscape garden began.
The entire complex remained in the possession of the Herberstein family until 1939. Shortly before the war, the state of Styria acquired the castle and park. After being damaged during the war and occupation, the palace was incorporated into what was then the Joanneum State Museum and opened to the public in 1953 after restoration work.
The park area covers 17.9 ha. All owners and builders have always considered the chateau and the surrounding garden as an integral part.
At the beginning of the 20th century, interest in the garden waned and the Eggenberg Palace Park no longer had a gardener. As a result, the individual parts of the garden were torn down and over the decades became more and more overgrown.
The Schlosspark Eggenberg is one of the most important garden architecture monuments in Austria and is under monument protection. In 1993, a garden maintenance work was commissioned in cooperation with the Federal Monuments Office, the aim of which was to reconstruct and preserve the garden as a cultural monument of the Romantic era.
