This scene always makes me laugh. I begin to reminice about the old days in theatre and how we thought we were so cool but really, probably looked really silly.

For me, the tiny, superbly-talented orchestra - all decked out in black tie and led by the deadly-serious conductor, performing like he's at the Academy Awards - is a terrific absurd element that helps make the overall scene so funny. It's not what you'd expect from a small town stage production, and that's precisely the point. Such a great comedy.

I LOVE this movie. Christopher Guest and the other creators obviously did some community theater (as I have) because they got so many things spot on: the unnatural way the actors move around the stage, like when Corky pursues the girl in this scene, the actors yelling all of their dialog, the cheap props, garish makeup, and the hilariously inappropriate casting, such as a middle-aged, obviously gay man as love interest to a young woman. Oh and the total self-seriousness and pomposity of the directors and some of the actors. Yet even while making fun of its subject matter, the movie never becomes mean spirited, and it manages to also capture the love and cameraderie among the cast and crew. Classic.

Don’t ever do to off off Broadway, then. They have stuff that’s even more amateurish
Community theatre never has such a professional sounding orchestra. That is the fail point on this mockumentary. Plus it's less humourous and rather just mean spirited. A professional making fun of amateurs is beating a dead horse.

Not true. My local one is very good in the orchestra; it’s (just like this movie) where the cast isn’t anywhere near pro.

Usually professional musicians such as school music teachers/band directors and local piano teachers are the ones playing in my local community theater orchestra. Therefore, the orchestra is always better than the cast.
