Michael McKean on Christopher Guest, retaining the rights to play Lenny, that gave him diarrhea
The actor: Michael McKean first came to prominence in the early 1970s as part of the comedy group The Credibility Gap, along with fellow members David L. Lander and Harry Shearer. Although McKean and Lander found fame together as Lenny and Squiggy on Laverne & Shirley, Shearer and McKean would also find pop-culture immortality-along with Christopher Guest-in This Is Spinal Tap.

Interview Rule number one- let your guest speak.
Everybody in the UK thought Spinal Tap was real. And then we wondered why we'd never heard of them. And THEN, still not figuring it out, we kept on trying to buy their albums. For years. AND THEN, when we finally found out they were a spoof, we wanted them to be real - with real albums - and lo, it came to pass.

@@tech-nomadic5218 They would be exactly 60. I think the median age for Colbert is significantly higher than that. It was 58 when Dave signed off a decade ago and broadcast TV audiences have aged hugely since then, and CBS tends to be the oldest in that group. Colbert frequently finishes first in total viewers but last in 'the demo'. Then add in that Spinal Tap was a cult phenomenon even among 20 year olds, and the bread is getting sliced paper thin. Just corlbets failure at humor
For years, I had no idea this was a "fake" band! I first heard of Spinal Tap when they were interviewed in Guitar Player or some other guitarist oriented magazine back in the day before the internet and they even had some of their songs transcribed in that issue along side of other songs from actual bands (I have the issue somewhere in a box but I'm too lazy to dig through 15 or so boxes to find it but they were on the cover). I sought out the movie when I was in Germany and turned it off after the whole Shank Hall scene because I couldn't believe these guys were that dumb as a band. Fast forward two years and I moved to Milwaukee after leaving Germany and while on my way to work, a radio ad came on for Shank Hall and it triggered a thought about the band Spinal Tap. I watched the movie again and mentioned it to a guy at work and he told me that the Shank Hall here in MKE was named after the movie came out. It was then the lightbulb went off and I realized I had been bamboozled for those couple of years and it finally hit me! Yes. I will take to my grave the fact I thought Spinal Tap was an actual world famous band and not a parody. I admit it. Needless to say, the guys can play and are legit musicians. I also love This is Spinal Tap to pieces!
Video title is misleading. They don't talk about any if those things.
